Young Nicola Gregori has always wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father, a brilliant clock-maker who’s famous for his wild, fantastical designs. But his father instead sends him to school to learn more practical matters. I didn't think it possible for me to love a book any more than I loved Hayden Thorne's Twilight Gods, that is until I read Renfred's Masquerade. I did make it through the majority of the book without shedding a tear, but once the waterworks started, they didn't stop. This story is so emotionally gripping and so powerful that it's messages will surely resonate for months, if not years, to come.

Nicola Gregori is a young boy who's afflicted with a disability--a withered leg that causes him to walk

I was going to shelve this book in the m/m read and/or romance, but I think that would be a COMPLETE disservice to this VERY excellent book.

I think I need to make it clear that this book is so far away from my usual genre that I may sound odd writing a review like this.

First with the characters... There are very few in this story, but each and every one of them is painted so clearly. Their foibles and folly's are clear too. I really liked the lead. He was someone who just jumped out of the pag

Hmmmm I'm on the line on this one.. I have to say up front that I'm not a big historical reader.. And this story is historical..

SO.. Criteria..

It was really hard to separate story and character's in this review.. both seemed reliant on each other to grow, which in my opinion is the sign of a very well crafted book.

Characters - Well developed.. all the main players are very artfully written.. The turmoil in the lead is fully developed and enables the reader to be the lead... The main secondary

This may just be my favorite of Hayden's novels. There's just so much magic here. The story is the kind that you can read out loud - the kind that weaves a quiet, tantalizing spell. It has more self-awareness than the fairy-tale, and speaks to its readers in a way that shows just how much depth it can get out of its basic premise. Every character feels nuanced. The plot of the story weaves a touch of historic Italy in with a touch of magic, nodding both to the romantic fairy tales of old and the ...more

Firstly, this has the most gorgeous cover art of anything I have ever seen... I could stare at it all day long. Seriously. Thorne's ability to create landscapes so perfectly detailed and vibrant is a gift unto itself. Her ability to produce fully realized characters is genius. A beautifully rendered story of the the mistakes people make and the power that the belief in magic can heal regret and create hope.

I liked this story. I was picturing a Hayao Miyazaki movie while I was reading.

I started off as a writer of young adult fiction, specializing in contemporary fantasy, historical fantasy, and historical genres. My books ranged from a superhero fantasy series to reworked and original folktales to Victorian ghost
