…the blizzard was her shield – without it she would never have come this far.
Sierra has escaped the clutches of the King’s Torturer, Lord Kell and his apprentice, Rasten. For two years she has been imprisoned and abused to break her spirit and her mind. Sierra, a Child of the Black Sun possesses a special gift, a power that feeds off and grows from the sufferings of others. So powerful is her ability, Kell will stop at nothing to bring her back.
After a failed coup ten years ago Prince Cammarian...more
I really needed some proper high fantasy to refresh myself from all the other stuff I've been reading (most of it very good, but traditional fantasy is my true love, and I need reminding of that sometimes!), so I pulled this off the TBR shelf. I received it in the goodie bag at the Aurealis Awards, courtesy of the publisher, and didn't know anything about it, or the author. And it's always nice to discover and enjoy a new Australian writer!

Winter Be My Shield came recommended by Robin Hobb, and that was enough for me to pick it up. What I found was a good, solid, fantasy book. If that doesn't sound like high praise, it is. And for a debut novel, I was really impressed. If you're like me, and you're a long-time fantasy fan who gets a bit weary sometimes (too accustomed to the tropes of the genre, too easy to tell how the story will unfold.. etc.) then I would recommend this book to you.

Winter Be My Shield is Jo Spurrier’s debut novel and the first book of Children of the Black Sun trilogy. I was lucky enough to receive an advanced review copy of this book from Harper Voyager.
Set in a country where winter lasts about six months and involves piles of snow (much like the cover depicts), the story follows Sierra, Cam and Isidro. Sierra is a powerful mage but was enslaved by the sadistic Blood Mage Kell and forced to feed him power while he tortured various prisoners. She was parti...more

An amazing epic fantasy. 5 out of 5 stars.
I loved this book. To say this book was well written is an understatement. Jo Spurrier is a very talented writer whose writing style is utterly captivating, her voice holding me in awe in some places.
Winter Be My Shield is a richly imagined and dark tale of Sierra, a woman with a very rare and lethal power – she gains power from the suffering of others and can tear a person to shreds with a bolt of that power. In her land, Mages, people like Sierra, are...more

i literally picked this book up at random when i was at a mind blank at what to read next and OMG it did NOT disappoint.
From the moment i started to read this i was drawn in, the scenery was described beautifully and the plot was a breath of fresh air.
The story is set in an era filled with mages and magic...although not the ones you are usually faced with. Sierra a child of the black sun (an extreme rarity even amongst her kind) who's source of power was fuelled by the pain of others, an unlimit...more

I was expecting this novel to be great based on Tsana's review, but I hadn't anticipated exactly how much I would enjoy it. I had to read it over three days, and when faced with a few moments of spare time I found myself cracking the spine to read a few paragraphs. A vivid and engaging book, I have to give Jo Spurrier my respect for writing something I couldn't get out of my head!

Welcome to the land of Ricalan – the snows are thick for six months of the year and the occupying Mesentreian empire are barely holding invaders at the borders. Sierra, a sorceress barely in control of her considerable powers, is on the run. Prince Cammarian and his brother Isidro are also in hiding, but there are invaders about and nowhere is safe. I really enjoyed it. Takes about a chapter or so before you get into it, but after that you don't really want to put it down.
I felt the end could have been written a little better though - its as though the author has written the story and chosen to cut it in 3 to make a trilogy. The book cannot stand alone and be great book. Its a third of a book.
I can't wait to read the other 2 thirds though!

I ordered this book direct from Australia because I wanted to read it that badly. It was totally worth the price plus shipping. Spurrier has created this fascinating, complex, political, and harsh world that (while never wanting to live there) I fell right into. Her world building was superb, and subtle. And the plot was great. I got hooked into the story and wanted to scream because the ending just ended and I wanted the next book so I could find out what happens next.

This book is absolutely amazing! I picked it up and literallycouldn't put it down until I was half way through it. Incredibly addictive. When I wasn't reading, I couldn't think of anything else other than this book. I am so not looking forward to the horrible gap of time that alays seems to never end while waiting for that pesky next book to come out. Forget counting down the days to Christmas, I'm counting down the day's to book 2!!!!
