Postcards from Pismo is a monologic epistolary, meaning that we only get the letters and emails written by Felix Maldonado, the protagonist, while the precise contents of the responses he receives in return must be inferred. Felix's letters are addressed to Lt. Marcus Greene, an American soldier stationed in Afghanistan. His first letter is the result of a class project to send mail to the overseas troops, but Felix and Lt. Greene become ongoing pen pals and develop a close friendship. Felix loo...more

In following up my debut novel, Latasha and the Little Red Tornado, I wanted to write something as different as I could -- let's call it a cleansing of the creative palate. And so fell the seeds of this book, a sort of "found object" novel composed entirely of correspondence.

The major elements of the book came from a handful of disconnected interests. While toiling away in Los Angeles as a struggling screenwriter (emphasis more on the 'struggling' than the 'screenwriter'), my wife and I would of...more

Postcards from Pismo by Michael Scotto, illustrations by Dion WIlliams - 4th grade and up- Wow, this was a powerful book that I snuck in a read of while here in the US, didn't expect to fit in another novel. I took longer to read it than I expected, perhaps because of the font/printing which was well chosen and made the book approachable. I didn't doubt once the voice in this book. I was drawn in immediately to the story of a boy who is assigned to write a letter to someone in Afghanistan and co...more

This timely book explores a lot of the important questions kids have about the military and going to war within very safe and comfortable boundaries. Felix is inquisitive and thoughtful, and his sincere worries, fears, and misconceptions are endearing. His straightforward tone and unapologetic curiosity sometimes come across as too bold or blunt, but I think it’s a style kids relate to and appreciate. Felix has the same ideas and thoughts as I’m sure many ten-year-old boys have, and his genuine...more

This book is an epistolary novel. Epistolary is among my favorite literary words.

Good writing, too!

This was a Good Reads first reads book giveaway. I just finished this book. I loved it. The characters seem so real. I love how Mr. Scotto knows how young boys think and feel. He allows the readers into their heads. This point of view was amazing. This is going into my class library, and I will be purchasing his other books as well. I can not wait to read more.

A good, non-depressing look at military service for younger readers.

Unique letter/email format held my son's interest and we both enjoyed Felix's point of view as a family member of someone in the military.
