When most people think of the Amish, they think of a tranquil god loving people living a simple life. While that is true for the most part, even they can't always escape the evils of the outside world that they live among, yet separate from. Perry Borntrager, one of their own, strayed from the fold. He got addicted to drugs and his downfall was noted by pretty much everyone in the small community. People attempted get him back on the right path, but sometimes when addiction takes hold, it just i ...more

I read this series out of order, for best reading enjoyment, I recommend not doing what I did. The first book in the series is Missing, THE SEARCH, Found, and followed by a novella, Peace. I read Found and Peace before THE SEARCH, so this is kind of backstory for me.

I enjoy Ms. Gray's Amish books, and even her cozy mystery Amish books are engaging. I like characters in this book, the way she includes random comments made by people, and the way it's in many different POVs. It leaves you guessing

So who really killed Perry? Luke, the detective from Cincinnati who is recovering from an on the job shooting, is still trying to find out in this second book in the series. He is also attracted to Frannie, the owner of the Yellow Bird Inn, but she is Amish. We will have to wait until the next book Found.

Words just for me:

An enjoyable cozy mystery where secrets abound, questions go unanswered, and romance is thriving; tucked comfortably within a beautiful setting; the rolling hills of Kentucky, among a tight Amish community, where everyone knows more about the murder of a young man than they are willing to tell.

The perfect set-up for Shelley Shephard Gray's conclusion to "The Secrets of Crittenden County"!

A wonderful second book in the series! I think I know who killed Perry, but I will know for sure in the next book.

The murderer still is at large in the Amish community of Crittenden County and Detective Luke Reynolds is still questioning the residents fearing that he is getting no where closer to the truth. After discovering the body of Perry Borntrager at the bottom of the well on the Miller's Farm, it seems like quite a few of the townspeople have secrets that they hope will never be discovered.

Frannie Eicher was the last person to see Perry alive, and not being the type to want to share more details than

At the beginning of THE SEARCH by Shelley Shepard Gray, we find out that Perry Borntrager has been missing but now his body's been found in the well on the Miller's Farm. This had me intrigued. I love a good mystery and a murder mystery even better. I dove head first into this story. I soon discover this is an ongoing investigation. Perhaps if I had read MISSING, the first book in The Secrets of Crittendon County series, I might not have struggled so much to get through this book.

The Search is the second book in Shelley Shepard Gray’s Amish series The Secrets of Crittenden County about the murder of Perry Borntrager and the people connected to the victim. The main focus is on Frannie Eicher, owner of the Yellow Bird Inn and one of the last people to see Perry alive. That final meeting showed Frannie how futile had been her hope that she could lead Perry away from drugs and back to the road of righteousness. Now that Perry is dead, Frannie can’t bring herself to tell all ...more

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Ok I’ve been waiting on this book since I finished The Missing.

The Search continues the story of who killed Perry Borntrager and the handsome investigator called in to help with the case is still in town. And Frannie still finds him attractive, though she would tell anyone. But it’s after Frannie’s accident that Luke decides she needs his help. Luke starts setting with Frannie at the hospital, because its so lonely there, and she does need someone to keep her company, doe

The Search by Shelley Shepard Gray is the second book in The Secrets of Crittenden County series. The discovery of Perry Borntrager's body has stirred up this close-knit Amish community. Detective Luke Reynolds is still trying to sort through the evidence and learn the identity of the killer, but his feelings for Perry's former flame Frannie Eicher has put a crimp in his investigation. When she is injured in a kitchen accident, Luke finds himself spending more time at her hospital bedside than w ...more

This is really less of a mystery and more of a romance, albeit a very quiet Amish one. Apparently this is the middle book in trilogy and the mystery - Who Killed Perry And Why - is spread out over the entire series.

We open with Perry and Frannie arguing. Soon, Perry is dead and (of course) it's under investigation. Because this is an Amish community, Perry's involvement with English men was noted as were his increasingly wild ways. Feeling unable to solve this himself, the Sherrif, Mose, asks h

This was quite an unusual book and the second of what appears to be a trilogy. I would suggest that you read the first book in this grouping first so you do not find yourself a bit at sea, as I found myself. Missing: The Secrets of Crittenden County, Book One

I DO LIKE TO READ ABOUT OTHER CULTURES AND I NAIVELY THOUGHT I UNDERSTOOD THE Amish. Unfortunately, I have not learned of the different orders of the Amish and I really liked this book for letting me understand th

The Search is the second book in Shelley Shepard Gray's series, The Secrets of Crittenden County, and a great addition! I absolutely loved the first book, Missing, and before I even read this book I expected to enjoy it... well, I loved it!

To someone like me who doesn't read that many Amish-like books, this series has been fantastic (so far). One thing in particular that has made this series so enjoyable to me is the murder mystery. After two books, I am still having a difficult time trying to d

The Secrets of Crittenden County, Book Two is called “The Search”, written by Shelley Shepard Gray. This book is a sequel to the first book of the series, “Missing”. I really enjoyed this book. It is set in a little eastern Kentucky town in the midst of Crittenden County. The characters are a mix of Amish, Mennonite and “Englischers”. In the first book, a young Amish man goes missing and is found dead. The sheriff calls for help from an old friend, Luke, who is recovering from bullet wounds, sus ...more

This is the second book in a trilogy which centers on a mystery in a New Order Amish community of who killed one of the young men. of the community. I read the first book a couple months ago and the second book continues where the first book left off without really reminding us anything that happened in the previous book. Although\, I have read books where nearly half of the new book is a summary of the previous book and those are just too repetitive, but I would have liked a bit of a summary, j ...more

This is the second book in the 'Secrets of Crittenden County' series by Shelley Shepherd Gray. We read the first one ('Missing') a few months ago for our Amish book club read. I think I liked the first book better.
This book was good, and I enjoyed learning more about the mystery of who killed Perry, but at the same time, I found myself wishing that the author would pair up a good Amish woman with a good Amish man. This is the second book in the series, and the second time that the Englisher 'get

I bounced between 2 stars and 3 for this one. The story seems too simple and contrived. I'm slightly annoyed that I have to read all 3 books to solve the mystery. I guess I prefer series where each book can stand on it's own, but if you like it, you can follow the characters into another story. Also, it seems the author has respect for the Amish religion, BUT the women keep falling in love with "Englishers" so that they are investigating the idea of leaving their faith. I can accept it happening ...more

Luke and Mose continue to investigate the death of Perry Bontrager in The Missing. Shelley Shepard Gray continues the story of the effect the death of this Amishman gone wrong has on the community. His friends and family. On the two Amish women he courted. The story gets more involved as it goes along. Lydia Plank from The Missing has fallen for Walker, an Englisher and you get a feel for the difficulties it can cause. This would be easy to spoil and I think you need to find the surprises on you ...more

This is the second book of a trilogy. I thought it was slow moving until about half way through, then it picked up with much needed energy and activity. I will say I did enjoy it, the mystery throughout the book is keeping me in suspense. I will look forward to the third book. The book is definitely Amish in content, and there isn't any foul language, and just a hint of love with a kiss, but nothing more.

This is a filler book for what should really be a short mystery story. This one can probably be skipped since not much happens.
All the lying Amish people really bothered me. Lying is a sin and they are supposed to be so righteous so why are they lying?

Why was Frannie making 60 mini quiches when only one person was staying at the inn?
Why was everyone waking Frannie up while she was recovering in the hospital? Who paid for the hospital anyway?

Once again - well done! I'm really enjoying Shelley Shepherd Gray's stories - Amish folk in Kentucky - USA - I just find them really well done. Second in series, Secrets of Crittenden County. (KY) Perry has been murdered, Detective Luke Reynolds has come to help his friend find the killer. Working with Amish people and others in the community has proven that there are many secrets that have yet to be brought out.

Now I have to try to locate the last book in the series.

I very much enjoyed this story by Shelley.
I haven't read book 1, but still had no problem following the plot.

One thing I especially liked was Shelley's use of quotes at the firs to each chapter -- I could picture the characters being interviewed about the missing young man. It added a lot of tension to the story.

Well done!
