Hiaasen, Carl & Montalbano, Bill. A DEATH IN CHINA. (1984). ****. This is one of three books that these two authors wrote cooperatively. The other two are “Trap Line,” and “Powder Burn.” Montalbano was a foreign correspondent for the Miami Herald, where Hiaasen also worked as a writer of the metropolitan column. Montalbano died in 1998, and Hiaasen went on to write a series of novels set in Florida that are the benchmark of a genre called “ecological crime fiction.” This book was a timel More...

Hiaasen’s work has never been so far from Florida, though it does at least make a cameo appearance. In this story, professor Thomas Stratton is on vacation in China, annoying the busybody in his tour group by eschewing nearly all its tours. When he finds out fellow professor and mentor David Wang is also in Peking, he makes plans to see him. Stratton is shocked to learn his friend is dead, a victim of “death by duck,” a pithy expression for American tourists who die on vacation in China after More...

Hiasen is at his best writing humor. This action-mystery book falls flat.

A very tiresome read. Too preachy for its own good, and with the protagonist getting into so much trouble, getting captured so much, toward the end of the book I had decided he was more than a bit of a dope.

I like Hiassen as humor novelist and this was very different. A serviceable story nonetheless but B grade fiction.

Starting off the summer with a sizzling one for the solstice by Hiassen & some other dude. I think I like Hiassen better on his own (I'm not a big fan of group projects) but this book was fast-paced enough to keep me reading. The hero, Tom Stratton, nearly died about 14 times. Not real believable, and at times downright contrived. I didn't like the flow. But it's good for light summer reading I suppose. This book would make a great Hollywood action movie that I'd probably avoid seeing, lik More...

It was okay. Not as good as the other Hiaasen early hard crime novels. It is pretty typical of the genre.

A typical 'international intrigue' type adventure story, with none of Hiaasen's usual humor, wackitude, and lunatic characters. Really boring, actually. If you're looking for fine examples of Hiaasen's writing, stick to his solo work.
