I'm a sucker for a good "arranged marriage" story, and this one did not disappoint. I really enjoyed how March and Charlotte had, if not "love" at first sight, at least attraction and compatibility from the start.

The biggest conflict in their relationship actually came from the fact that Charlotte tried so hard to be a "proper" Duchess, and as such was ashamed of her own passion. March's own attitudes towards the "proper" way to treat his Duchess dealt him loads of guilt and confusion as well,...more

Disappointed and I can't put my finger on the why.

The hero is charming and a bit unworldly. His family history is scandalous so he needs a bride who will lend respectibility.

Heroine is innocent and spirited without being too annoying. They have been betrothed since before her birth, but she was never told about the agreement. (Really? That pushed the believability boundery for me.)

For the first half of the book, there isn't much conflict. It's pure romance so I had a difficult time understanding...more

4 STARS "Raised in the Dorset countryside, Lady Charlotte Wylder doesn't care one bit about well-bred decorum. The dark-haired, blue-eyed beauty would rather ride a horse than attend a stuffy ball. So when Charlotte learns that she is to leave immediately for London to wed the Duke of Marchbourne, a perfect model of aristocratic propriety, she is less than enchanted with her arranged marriage.
But to her delight, their first encounters are brazenly flirtatious, and their wedding night burns with...more

WOW I really loved this new release from Isabella Bradford and if her follow up stories are just as good then she will certainly be added to my auto-buy author list.

I'm a sucker for a good arranged marriage romance and this one in no way disappointed. A lovely entertaining story about Lady Charlotte Wylder and James FitzCharles, the Duke of Marchbourne. Charlotte has been tucked away in the country since her father's passing, climbing trees rather than learning etiquette befitting a Duke's wife....more

4 stars (I would have given it 4.5, but the adventure plot right there at the end I thought unnecessary and took away from the story)

Confession time here: I love arranged marriages/marriage of convenience books. I love seeing the couples meet, marry and then start to slowly fall in love. Here was no exception. Charlotte is every inch a Earl's daughter and March every inch a Duke but from the moment they first meet and then later after they are married, they can't seem to keep their hands of of...more

More like 2.5 stars...I received this book through the review program over at netgalley. I originally put it down after the first couple of chapters and did not plan on finishing it. The story is set in mid-18th century England. As a fan of eighteenth century fiction (ie Jane Austen), I had a very hard time accepting the main characters, Charlotte and March, as a true eighteenth century characters.

I did end up picking the book up a second time (well, opening it on my kindle) because I was lookin...more

I loved this book! Even though I only gave it 4 stars. But I seldom give ANY books 5 stars.
I loved March and Charlotte from the beginning. From the moment he saw her up in a tree trying to save Fig, her sister, Diana's cat to the end of the book. Charlotte was betrothed to March (The Duke of Marchbourne) when she was a very tiny girl and never knew about it until her mother told her she would be going to London to be married. I think one of the most romantic things March did was "accidentally o...more

Isabella Bradford -- real name Susan Holloway Scott -- knows her history. I have long enjoyed the blog she writes, with the incomparable Loretta Chase, www.twonerdyhistorygirls.com. Having written many historical novels, including several set in Restoration England, she has now set her hand to historical romance set smack in the middle of Georgian England.

I was prepared to be impressed, but alas this was not to be. When You Wish Upon a Duke is a perfectly okay story, but there's really not much...more

I thought this was a great story.
Charlotte was raised in the country and dreams of finding love. So when she hears she's betrothed to a Duke, she wants to make sure she'll win his heart. To do that she wants to prove she could be a great Duchess and tries to behave that way. Unfortunately that means she has to ignore some of her own desires, because they aren't proper according to Society.

March doesn't want to be like his father, at all. And he behaves extremely opposite to how his father would...more

Her parents had the kind of marriage she desperately wished to have...

Raised in the country and away from society's demands and prying eyes, Charlotte Wylder and her sisters live a meaningful life of love with their mother while still dealing with the tragic death of their father. However, Charlotte's father wanted so much more for her than becoming a country spinster and had arranged a match with the son of a Duke. The arrangement may have come as a surprise, but Charlotte takes it all in sensi...more

I was going to give this one 3.5 stars, but I knocked it down to 3 because of something stupid towards the end.

Charlotte Wylder and the Duke of Marchborne have been betrothed since they were children, although it comes as rather a shock to Charlotte, who knew nothing about it until she was eighteen. But she and March are both young, attractive and wealthy and are well disposed towards each other from their first meeting; it's clear that before long, this initial liking will blossom into more.

Lady Charlotte Wylder learns she is betrothed to the Duke of Marchbourne the day before she has to leave for London to prepare for her wedding. She's been raised in the Dorset countryside and is less than thrilled at the prospect of leaving her carefree lifestyle for the trappings of London society, not to mention a prospective husband she's never met. Lord Marchbourne, or March as he's called, is a bit anxious himself to see this young woman he's set to marry and orchestrates a chance encounter...more

Charlotte Wylder is surprised to learn from a midnight visitor that she has been betrothed to the future Duke of Marchbourne since she was an infant. So starts one of the most delightful regency romances of the year. Charlotte is quickly swept up into the world of Regency London and falls in love, lucky for us, with the very Duke she has been engaged to.
Without a doubt, the characters in this novel make it t...more

This was cute. It's a pretty simple story of an arranged marriage that's mostly focused on the relationship, which I did like a lot -- and I wouldn't mind seeing more of that in romances. The unnecessary drama at the end definitely was a detractor, and overall I found the middle segment of the story as the strongest. The quality of the writing in this case was not quite there for me, and I'm not really talking about prose specifically (that's not usually a dealbreaker). More just the overall way...more

Charlotte Wylder is a lady - in theory at least. Since the death of her Father, an Earl, her Mother has raised she and her sisters in the countryside. Charlotte has been the bane of her poor Mother's existence, with her improper behavior and passionate spirit. Now that she's of age, an arranged marriage that her Father put into place just after her birth comes to light. The Duke of Marchbourne, known as March to his friends, has known of the union his entire life. The purpose is to improve the n...more
Reading Romances
When You WIsh Upon a Duke has a very natural, although anti climatic, story romance readers will appreciate.

The lack of a proposed obstacle in the beginning of this novel doesn’t necessary mean that our perfect pair won’t be facing some issues later on. It seems like a realistic point of view to see how marriage doesn’t mean happily ever after. I truly admire when an author focuses on how the characters react to such a big transformation in their lives. There were a lot of clichés in this story,...more

I'm not a big historical romance fan; I glommed them in middle school and high school, but not so much since then. Every now and then though I do read one. The blurb for this one immediately caught my eye and the cover is lovely, despite the missing head (what IS with all the headless covers these days?) I'm glad I took a chance; I loved this book and I expect I'll be re-reading it. I'll definitely be reading the next book in the series.

Charlotte and March were engaged as young children but have...more

My full review.

Let’s start here: this was my least favorite of the three (and the last one I read). Then this: Bradford’s great strength, aside from her wit and lovely writing style, is her chameleon-like quality of adopting the tone of the book to the characters. Conclusion: I just didn’t like Charlotte and March nearly as much as I liked the characters in the other two books. And I’m not sure that means anything other than that I tend not to enjoy stories where one of the characters thinks tha...more

This book isn't usually in the genre I usually find myself reading however I will now be adding it to my favorites. This book is definitely for an older crowd but I found it sizzling with romance and full of love. This is one of my favorite eras in time and the author did a great job of capturing the beauty and elegance of such a fantastic period. The characters are well rounded and the author did a great job of describing them and allowing us to know each one personally. I love that the book wa...more

I had high hopes for this book. It started strong. The hero and the heroine are crazy about each other right off the bat. They want the same things; their path to happiness is clear. But as they move forward in what seemed like a pretty straightforward love story, they completely screw themselves up.

After the death of her father, Charlotte grew up in the country with her mother and sisters. She had no idea he had arranged a marriage for her until a solicitor arrived from the Duke of Marchbourne,...more

When You Wish Upon a Duke is a book that will make readers smile, but it is lifted above the status of a merely amusing book by the detailed look it offers of the domestic life of a duke and duchess in Georgian England. From descriptions of Charlotte’s quarters in the ducal mansion to the clothes she wears and the food served to the ducal couple, the setting is vibrantly rendered. I especially liked the scene where the duke asks Charlotte to call him March, the name his intimates use, and she ag...more

The story was charming and sweet...too sweet, the heroes were too perfect. Nobody is that perfect.
I love arranged marriage books, but they usually have some drama, something going terribly wrong to make it more interesting. This one didn't.
The hero and heroine are beautiful, rich, and titled. They have no personality flaws. They fell in love almost from the start. The only thing wrong in their relationship was when they had sex. They acted too wild. He wanted to treat her like a lady and not de...more

In the beginning the story stalled with detail. Once it got going the story rolled smoothly along. I liked both characters. Charlotte has no flaws. She's wonderfully understanding if a bit naive of sophisticated society and its deceptions. The duke, March, has emotional skeletons in his past that have him apologizing or avoiding sexual passion. He's a good man. Some may consider the story a bit boring because it avoids lengthy arguments and ridiculous misunderstandings but I enjoyed reading a pu...more

Book 1 of a new trilogy of Georgian romances that I found at the library.

I really wish that we could award half-stars in the ratings as I would have given this 2.5 stars.

Reasons I didn't rate it higher:

1) I really have a hard time these days with 18-year-old heroines, especially when they become duchesses.

2. It seemed as if the author couldn't decide as if she wanted a light, sexy romp of a story or a story with a tormented hero.

Be at it may, I liked it enough that I'm reading Book 2 as well.

Arranged marriage stories are one of the staples of Historical Romances, yet I’ve never been the biggest fan of them. Yes, the circumstances of the romance are the same as any plot type, with two strangers coming together and falling in love. However, when the marriage is an absolute for the couple then I sometimes get the feeling that they aren’t so much falling in Love but falling into a companionship with benefits. From my personal library I can probably name a handful of arranged marriage bo...more
