Having been a follower of Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach for years on twitter and her blog I felt comfortable reading this book.
If there is one complaint I had about the book it is that the authors seem to have a utopian vision for the power of connection. Becoming a connected educator takes work, just as cultivating a garden takes work, we plant seeds in social networks, water them on a regular basis by participating in discussion, and give them lots of sunlight or listen while learning from others.

Amazing? I don’t lightly rate books as amazing, but in The Connected Educator, Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach and Lani Ritter Hall practice the connected learning and leading of which they speak.
Prior to reading this book, I had been becoming a connected educator for almost two years. Then I found Sheryl and Lani hosting this book in a book study for Connected Educator Month, 2012. I joined in the study as much as I was able, since it was the start of a new school year, but watching them at work connect...more

The book gets plaudits from me for what it's not, as much as what it is:
It's not a review of snazzy digital tools with examples of how to use them in the classroom. There's a bit of tool review, but the book doesn't promote the idea of Teacher as All-knowing Guide to Using Tools.
It's not critical of teachers who are low on the technological learning curve.
It doesn't blame schools for not immediately adopting the Next Big (Electronic) Thing.
It's a book about people. And I like that, very much.

Having recently taken an online course with Lani Hall, I was curious about the book. This book is clear and well-written. One of the nice features is the opportunity to connect with others online who have also read the book. There are some useful organizers, for example the graphic of a healthy online community and the ICM for an online community (innovation configuration map). If you are planning on investigating, joining or facilitating an online community, this book is a great addition to you...more
I was referred to this book through a tweet on twitter, and then, consequently, joined the online book club that was hosted by the book's author. This book was extremely informative about how to become professionally connected to other educators through various online tools. At the end of each chapter, the authors give the reader an assignment of possible next steps in becoming connected online. I have shared many of the ideas from this book with others.
