Karma's a Bitch was such a delightful book.
It follows Darwin, a 28-year-old woman who moves to Florida and opens a pet boutique, along with Sylvia, who takes care of the grooming. As she is new there and quite softhearted, she befriends a homeless man, Mad Dog, who eventually ends up dead in a lake with an expensive bottle of rum nearby.

Darwin, has a unique gift, she gets psychic visions from animals and Mad Dog's dog, Karma, "tells" her that this was no suicide or accident. She keeps believing
Firstly, the title of this novel is so witty on numerous levels! What a hoot! But, alas, one must read this fetching novel to fully appreciate the novel's name in accordance with the storyline. Bravo to author Shannon Esposito for her play on words!

I LOVE the wonderful world of canines so with this fun, mystery novel incorporating dogs as characters it was a big plus for me. While reading the novel I thought that the author had to be, without question, a dog lover simply from her writing in this

This is the first novel in a series that is unique...both the main character, Darwin Winters, and a Mastiff, Karma are psychic! That puts a difference in the crime solving that was special.

Darwin has moved to St. Pete, Florida to begin her own independent life. Finding herself away from family (a psychic one that is alluded to,) she is naive in the ways of the world. Darwin works in a Pet Boutique with a lovely woman, Sylvia, but she is still lonely. Meeting a homeless man (Mad Dog,) and his tru

I just finished reading Karma's A Bitch and I have to tell you it's one of the most emotionally satisfying reads I've had in long time! I know, I know, it's supposed to be a lighthearted romp, and it is – but I fell head over heels with Karma (a dog) and my poor heart ran the gamut between grief and ridiculously soaring happiness. I loved this book right from the beginning. The main character, Darwin, is just kooky enough to be loveable and her psychic ability to communicate with pets endeared h ...more
I want to say that this is a cozy mystery, but it is not like any cozy I have ever read. Most are light and fun, this one is kind of depressing. In other cozies, the main character/amateur detective has very little or no grief for the victim. Darwin was grieving way too much for my taste. Especially for a man she only knew for a week.
I didn't get attached to any of the characters. I think I would have liked this book a lot better if there was more in it about Darwin's powers.
Pet psychic? Let me at it!! Alas, this book did not quite live up to my expectations. There was such a focus on food, both eating and cooking/baking, that at times I wondered if the author had to fill empty spaces because she had run out of ideas. Her characters are not sufficiently developed; no attempt is made to describe the main protagonist's reasons for moving away from her family and her way of dealing with energy "buzzes" is severely over the top. As for her partner's bizarre accent, NONE ...more
I absolutely loved this book. The main characters are Darwin Winters and Karma (a dog). Darwin moves away from her family who all have paranormal abilities and starts a pet grooming business. Darwin's ability is that she is a pet psychic. She makes friends with a homeless guy "Mad Dog" and his dog "Karma" but a week later she finds Mad Dog dead and she takes Karma. When she touches Karma she see bits and pieces of how Mad Dog died and she is determined to find out who actually murdered him. She ...more
Karma's a big dog -- a really big dog with no teeth. He and his owner, a homeless man known as MadDog, make friends with Darwin, who is new in town and runs an upscale pet boutique. The story unfolds from there, and it's a good one. I figured out the biggest part of the "whodunit" portion of the story before it was revealed, but I still enjoyed every page of the adventure. The "pet psychic" angle was handled without too heavy a hand, and I thought the story was well-crafted.

If you like animal cozies, this is a good one. Because I tend to really enjoy cozies with animals sometimes they blur together but I liked the characters in this one and they way the dog helped with the crimes. It was different. I was also surprised by the breed of the dog. It made me laugh that he was a mastiff. Characters (including the dog) were well-developed. Best of all is that I couldn't figure out for sure who had killed "Mad Dog" and how it had been done. The reader gets as much knowled ...more

Florida can be fun

Karma is the traumatized dog of a homeless veteran who died under questionable circumstances. In comes Darwin Winters to help the grieving animal find the real reason why as the local Leo's just want to label him as a suicide and get on with their shiny, happy lives.

I won't tip off any more of the plot than that, because the key to any good mystery is surprise, but there are plenty of suspects, plot twists and background for a reader to fully immerse themselves in this universe

Good start to a series. Darwin moved to Florida to escape her family and try to be normal. But she never will be normal as she can sometimes see animal's memories. When she befriends a homeless man and his dog, Karma, it sets the wheels in motion on the mystery.

What I enjoyed:
* Karma, what a big, loveable dog.
* Darwin's willingness to help a friend.
* Will seems like he will make a good love interest and there is no triangle in site.
* Pirate City and the inhabitants.

What could have been better:
I absolutely loved this book. If your an animal lover (especially dogs) you'll love this series. The characters were easy to like, It gave me a whole new empathy for the homeless. This is a true heroine, with a lot of heart. I love the friendship between Darwin and Karma. Can't wait to read the next in this series. Shannon Esposito has a new fan.

Escaping from a sheltered home life and a world were her family's unusual abilities make them different, Darwin opens a pet boutique with her dog groomer and friend, Sylvia. Her need to hide her ability to "read" traumatized pets gets more difficult soon after Darwin befriends Karma and his person Mad Dog, a homeless Gulf War vet. This talent leads Darwin in her search for the truth behind the murder of her new friend Mad Dog when Karma shares images with her that do not fit the official explana
As far as a cozy mystery, this one is really
just the thing! especially if you love dogs...

sense of place are heartwarming and very
well done. For a fun light read, this is
A great story

From beginning to end there was no break or slow in the flow of this story. I have found a new author to follow. I am off now to buy the next book, sure hope Shannon writes faster than I read.

Mystery Meets Psychic with Hint of Romance

This was a tad slow in getting into story. I did enjoy the various dynamics between the characters . Also like the premise of animals helping a psychic solve mysteries.
Not my usual cozy mystery or mystery as I'm not one for psychics, supernatural, or fantasy, but this book was a true delight. A free download that worked as I'd definitely buy the next one! Recommend.

This is a great start to a new cozy mystery series, with a bit of a paranormal twist. All of the characters are well-developed and realistic, even the dog.

I'm not normally fond of paranormal books but this is one of the exceptions. Darwin's ability to read animals' minds is used to enhance and develop the story, without dominating it. All too often in paranormal books, the story is just the showcase for the protagonist's super abilities. But Darwin is a very realistically portrayed and likeable

Great read!

Loved every minute of it! There was laughter, friendship and joy, all rolled into a great story line. Couldn't put it down, and am sorry now that it has ended.

Enjoyed very much

This book was very enjoyable. I couldn't put the book down until I knew who did it. I look forward to another selection by this author.
Karma 's A Bitch (Pet Physic Mystery)

Good read fast paced . Could believe this really happening in real life . I would recommend to who like easy reading.
2014-01-31. Wow. This was definitely a different kind of animal cozy mystery. I loved it. The characters were great and I loved Karma. Just when you think you know where it's going, new twist comes up can't wait to read the net book.

the way this woman who loved dogs and wanted to help homeless people.the evil people who wants to harm homeless people.

Great adventure

Very gripping in parts. Love the dogs and how they contribute to the story. Darwin was a tough southern gal

What's not to love about a mystery with a dog? PLUS a girl who can see what the dog has seen? Good stuff! Fans of cozy mysteries will love this.

Didn't hate it, but didn't love it either. Too many holes, not enough background. Okay read but not sure if I'll read another one in this series.
I loved this book. I fell in love with Darwin and can't wait to read her further adventures!
very enjoyable read. looking forward to reading more.

Review to come soon.
I loved this book! I would suggest any animal or mystery lover give it a try! I received it free in exchange for an honest review, but I would have paid full price for it - it was that good... The very sad plight of the homeless is addressed, and the pathos of those scenes gives the book some of its more serious moments. But, it's not a heavy-handed lecture - merely an eye-opening look. There are moments of humor, intrigue, romance, and more in this little book, and I can't wait for more adventu ...more
