With a title like Lady Seductress's Ball, I was expecting Eliza Knight's novella to be a steamy novella without much plot. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised that this short erotic story concealed a happily ever after.

Olivia, Countess of March, has been having erotic dreams of Tristan, the Earl of Newcastle... while she's been waiting for her husband, the Earl of March, to just up and die already.

Her behavior isn't quite as vulture-like, or maybe harpy-like, as it sounds. Her parents' deathbed wish three years ago was that she marry the much older March. They thought it was safe. Olivia has found it stifling. She behaves with exacting propriety, but is miserable inside. And she is utterly alone.

Tristan, the man she dreams of, also dreams of her. Olivia doesn't know it, but he would have offered for her. But in the midst of her first season, her parents' sudden death and her subsequent marriage to March quashed all his hopes, too. Three years later, he still burns for a woman he cannot touch.

Until one evening, when March is feeling a little better, Olivia holds a dinner party, and invites several friends. Daringly she invites Tristan. For a few brief moments in the garden, they acknowledge their mutual desire for each other, but go no further than heated caresses.

Weeks later, Olivia receives an invitation from Tristan to Lady Seductress's Ball. One night in the country when anyone who is invited can indulge any sexual fantasy with whoever they choose. The only requirement is that she arrive masked.

Will she go? And after an entire night indulging in every fantasy she has ever dreamed of, can she return to a life of duty and obligation? Can love (and lust) conquer all?

Escape Rating C+: The story was trying to have its cake and eat it, too, in the romance vs. erotica sense, and squeeze it into 70 pages. There wasn't quite enough space. That Olivia might lust after someone other than her husband, made a lot of sense. He wasn't much interested or interesting, even before his illness. But there isn't enough relationship between Tristan and Olivia to show them falling in love with each other. I'm glad there's an HEA, but why does it happen? There's just not enough space to develop the "sex into love" plot, and we don't see enough of their previous acquaintance to see why they might have already been in love before the opening scenes of the story.(less)

Olivia is unfortunately married to the aged Earl of March who she neither loves nor cares for. She dreams of another, Tristan, but she doesn’t want to do much while Lord March lives.

There is plot with this erotica, but it’s pretty well balanced. The erotica is rather steamy from an evening in a gazebo to an enticing masquerade.

This was quite an enjoyable little piece of Regency smut, provided by netgalley.

If it's steam you want, then this has it - in spades. I like the idea of the smutty masked ball/orgy, and it works well, although it was a bit of a stretch to think that it's a "celebration of the body". I always thought it was a chance for posh folks to bonk loads of unknown people, drink lots, eat lots, take naughty substances and generally behave badly. I like the idea of the smutty masked ball/orgy, and it works well, although it was a bit of a stretch to think that it's a "celebration of the body". I always thought it was a chance for posh folks to bonk loads of unknown people, drink lots, eat lots, take naughty substances and generally behave badly. We also get to know the heroine quite well, which is good in a little novella. She turns out to be a very pleasant person, and yet manages to make the orgy erotic but not sleazy as seen through her eyes.

I did have some problems with it, though.

- We don't get to know the hero enough. He says he's fancied the socks off the heroine for three years, but that's all we know about him, other than his physical appearance. We get so little of his internal dialogue and point-of-view as to make it almost entirely from the heroine's point-of-view.

- London to rural Nottinghamshire in 1815 wouldn't have taken a couple of hours. It takes a good few hours by car or train today. I guess if you were going mail coach or post and driving hard you could have done it in just over a day (but then you'd have to connect wherever you were going to), but with a private carriage, and in luxury, it would have taken far longer, since you wouldn't want to drive the horses hard. This strikes me as a pretty basic mistake.

- Now, the next problem I have is a bit silly, really. I know this is essentially historical erotica with a plot, and it is wonderful to have such a developed plot, but the poor hero sounds as if he must have either some unpleasant disease, or have taken the Regency equivalent of Viagra, because he spends the entire novella with a constant erection, even after several quick rounds of hunt-the-sausage. Personally, it may have made more sense to use some of those words to tell his POV, or to develop their relationship more, but the never-ending erection grated my nerves a bit.

- The biggest problem I had was the lust-to-love thing. The hero and heroine lusted after each ferociously, but also loved each other, after never have spoken? Hmm. Don't buy that one. And even after they start with the sex, they spend practically all their time bonking and not talking (mouths too busy, bless 'em), so where did this undying love come from? There was plenty of opportunity to change the plot slightly to work. I mean, the heroine was practically destitute after her old man croaked, so why not make her end up with the hero out of lust and necessity, but then have a half-page epilogue explaining how it had progressed to love? I don't know - I just don't like it when books confuse lust for love. It irritates me.

3 stars. I liked it - and the cover was accurate.(less)

I'll be honest with you, I wanted to read this book from the title alone, it sounded so, so naughty and it does not let you down. Olivia is in a loveless marriage to a much older man, but she is infatuated with Tristan, an Earl, a bachelor, a rake. She is excited about the ball and can’t wait to experience everything it will offer. She was not disappointed but she was left wanting more.

Tristan is a sexy man known around the Ton. He is experienced in pleasuring women and wants to share that experience with Olivia. He has wanted to marry her since he first saw her but she married the Earl. He cherishes their time together at the ball but it’s not enough. The Earl is in poor health so all he has to do is bide his time until Olivia can be his, society be damned.

The chemistry between the two of them was obvious from the beginning. They are super hot together but there is still a sweet quality to their loving. He understands that she is inexperienced and takes the time to show her how it feels to be loved properly. She has that fresh innocence about her that allows her to be uninhibited. The scenes at the ball were smokin’ hot and left me craving more.

The story provided just enough background to understand Olivia’s marriage to the Earl and her connection to Tristan without over powering the reader with unnecessary facts. The main characters are interesting and complex enough that they evoke different emotions in the reader. I think this is important in a good story.

Overall I really enjoyed Lady Seductress’s Ball and give it 4 Flaming Hearts. (less)

The blurb for the book caught my eye and it didn't disappoint me. Everyone has secret fantasies, and the author created characters who have secret fantasies in erotic regency England setting which I fell in love with. Lady Seductress's Ball by Eliza Knight was an entertaining quick read. Historical Romance is not my favorite sub-genre of romance, but I do read it occasionally. I am glad that I did this time since I really enjoyed the characters and storyline of Ms. Knight's book.

Very Sexy!! This book was awesome. I love historical romance and to have it mixed with my erotic is an added bonus. Sometimes authors just that make the two seem believeable, but Eliza Knight did an outstanding job. I will be looking for other work by this author. I can't wait to see what else she has to offer.

If you are looking for a well-written, quick, sensual, historical read then this is the book for you. I really enjoyed the love story that was woven into this sizzling hot novella. Eliza Knight has managed to pack a well-rounded story into a short space – only 24,000 words.
