The summer may be heating up, but sales are cooling off at Fairy Tale Cupcakes and owners Melanie Cooper and Angie DeLaura will do anything to beef up sales so they jump at the offer to sell cupcakes at the annual Juniper Pass Rodeo. Unfortunately, their time in Juniper Pass will be anything but calm as one person is shot and another person murdered. Soon Mel and Angie find themselves involved in yet another murder case and working hard not only to save their business but to catch a killer.

Sales at the bakery have slowed leaving Mel and Angie in a quandry as to how to keep the business profitable. Slim Hazard comes to rescue asking them to open a cupcake truck at the rodeo he runs 6 hours away. During the parade Slim is shot and later the unlikeable star cowboy becomes the murder victim. Mel starts asking questions and all is well with some help from Uncle Stan and Joe DeLaura. In between there are movie quotes, a not so friendly bet with the barbecue vendors, and Angie having to...more

What I liked: I continue to like how close the girls are and how they have become close with Oz and Marty as well. I kind of like the Rodeo theme to this book.
What I didn't Liked: Even though I liked the Rodeo theme, I was not sure I liked it for this book. I like when they are in their town and the murder happens.
Overall Impression: I overall enjoyed this book, but still am not sure what I think of a Rodeo owner just happening by them and asking them to sell cupcakes at the rodeo when he just m...more

I like this series: it's light, fun, and has enough lively characters with enough going on with them to keep it feeling busy and progressing. I even like the ending - despite the fact that it involves the killer thinking that the main protagonist had figured out more than she really had, which I *didn't* like in that other cozy I read last week. I guess actually enjoying the book can make up for a sin like that - though it also helped that the way it actually turned out wasn't as cliché as it fi...more

The temperature is 114 Degrees in Scottsdale, but Fairy Tale Cupcakes has not been selling cupcakes. As Melanie Cooper and Ange DeLaura are debating whether to close for two weeks or not, their employees Oz and Marty show up with a van. Not just a van, but one that used to be an ice cream truck with a customer window, which promptly breaks down. They are rescued by Slim Hazard, who invited them to take their cupcake van to the rodeo up North at Juniper Pass. Tate Harper, their business partner i...more

Fairy Tale Cupcakes is hitting the road and headed for a rodeo! Off to sell their cupcakes to some cowpokes sounds like fun, but this is not the getaway any of them had in mind. Hang on tight the ride is wild!

I have warned you before and it is still true. You will crave cupcakes while reading this marvelous mystery so be sure to have some handy. That was the case with every book in this series!

Jenn has whipped up another delectable treat for our reading pleasure. The Arizona h...more

This is the first book I've read in the series. I rarely start in the middle of a series but this book was given to me by a friend and it was pretty good.
Angie and Melanie own a cupcake bakery with their friend, Tate. He is the moneybags while they do the day-to-day business type stuff. At least that's what I get from this book. Tate also has a major crush on Angie who has a rock-star boyfriend who's pressuring her to move to LA.
But the girls have more problems when they're invited to sell thei...more

Red Velvet Revenge is the fourth book in the Cupcake Bakery Mysteries. I've read the previous three books and I loved each one, and I have been very anxious for book four.

This time Mel, Angie, Tate, Marty and Oz are off to the rodeo at Juniper Pass where they are selling cupcakes! Not long before they get there the owner of the Rodeo gets shot (not fatally) and then the rodeo star is killed. Mel can't help but get involved and try and solve the murder.

I love this series. Angie being the only gir...more

Fourth in another favorite series. Though I enjoyed this outing, it isn't my favorite to date. The premise is great---Oz gets an old ice-cream truck fixer-upper from which to sell cupcakes and the store takes it on the road to a rodeo where they encounter problems, including a dead body---however, some of the story felt forced by trying to include all the usual characters in the story. We get phone calls to include Mom and Captain Jack and Uncle Ben and we get cameos featuring nemesis Olivia Puc...more

#55 Book Read in 2012
Red Velvet Revenge by Jenn McKinlay

This book is the fourth installment in one of my favorite cozy mystery series. In this book, Mel and Angie decide to bring their cupcake van to a rodeo to sell their cupcakes. As always when they are involved, there is drama at the rodeo and someone turns up dead. Mel begins to investigate the death and of course gets herself in trouble. Along with the murder mystery, the romance of Mel and Joe moves forward. Angie and Tate's unspoken love...more

This is the 4Th book in the A Cupcake Bakery Mystery series. It just might be the best one, too.

Angie and Melanie, owners of the Fairy tale Cupcakes bakery, are riding with Oz and Marty in a recycled Good Humor van that Oz has recently purchased. They are discussing how it can become the bakery delivery van when the van breaks down. Shortly after Slim Hazard. who heads the Juniper Pass Rodeo, stops to help. Once Slim learns of their bakery, he talks them into becoming a vendor at the upcoming ro...more

The people from "Fairy Tale Cupcakes" just happen to meet Slim Hazard the owner and operator of a
rodeo. Business at the "Fairy Tale Cupcakes" has been bad, they are in Phoenix and the weather has been HOT and people are not interested in eating cupcakes. When Slim tastes their cupcakes he wants them to bring their food van to his rodeo. Most people have never heard of selling cupcakes at a rodeo.....especially "Fairy Tale Cupcakes."
Since business is dead, they decide to go and try selling cupc...more

I really enjoyed this recent novel in the series "A Cupcake Bakery Mystery." Not only did the bakery go off campus, to a rodeo, but the characters were more complete and we got to know them better. I also enjoyed that Angie DeLaura finally made up her mind as to her future romantically.

There were laugh out loud scenes with bulls and cupcakes. There were surprises like new cake treats, such as 'Cake Pops' and Vegan cupcakes, which we are so fortunate to have recipes for now. They were well woven...more

With temperatures hovering near the 114 degree mark, business at the Fairy Tale Cupcake Bakery is really slow. The two owners, Angie DeLaura and Mel Cooper are tossed up about taking some time off until their newest and youngest employee, Oz, suggests they sell cupcakes out of his newly acquired van. Well, that is, after he gets it running again and does some much needed rehab on it. When the van broke down, the bakery crew was rescued by Slim and Tammy Hazard, owners of the Juniper Pass rodeo....more

I loved this book! It was by far the best in the series (which I already thought was one of the best series out there!) and Jenn McKinlay outdid herself with this one. The dialogue ( which is a big pet peeve of mine if it doesn't ring true) was excellent. The chemistry between Mel and Angie is great and rings true. I love all of the characters and I was really glad Oz and Marty got to shine in this one. I also like that Mel is getting fed up with the will they/won't they of Angie and Tate. I kne...more

Red Velvet Revenge is another quirky book in the Cupcake Bakery Mystery series. Best friends and co-workers, Mel and Angie are getting into trouble again with Tate, their longtime friend and business partner, Marty, the feisty senior, and Oz, the unique youngster who is a talented baker in his own right. This time Fairy Tale Cupcakes takes the delicious cupcakes on the road to a rodeo. A murderer is on the loose amongst the cowboys, clowns, vendors, and tourists. Someone has killed star bull-rid...more

Another great book in a great series! I love all the characters, and I think this one was probably my favourite due to a combination of great romantic tension, an excellent murder plot and the fact that the nemesis in the series, Olivia Pucket, was mostly absent (she's just a little over-the-top for me).

Red Velvet Revenge takes place at a rodeo in northern Arizona and Ms, McKinlay did an excellent job with the suspects, clues and denouement. I really had no idea who the murderer was until the re...more

Mel and Angie, owners of Fairy Tale Cupcakes return in the fourth entry in the Cupcake Bakery Mystery series.
Sales are lagging and the girls wondering what their next move should be to drive sales when they are lassoed into selling cupcakes at a rodeo out of town.
With the addition of the new cupcake van, they take the assignment.
I was thankful Olivia Puckett, their competition, didn't make an appearance til the end of the book, as I've grown tired of her bluster. Instead, we had a BBQ vendor at...more

I loved this one! I have read all four Cupcake Bakery books in less than a week! Great fast cozy reads with awesome characters!

I really enjoy reading about Mel, Angie and Tate's adventures. This time the mystery had a little more 'meat' to it and I appreciated that. There was a huge cliffhanger at the end that I can't wait to read more about in the 5th book, due out in April. It's already been preordered via Amazon for my Kindle!

Jenn has done it again.. She's taken her characters out of their comfort zone and dropped them into the middle of a rodeo. (I love rodeos) The town looks like something out of the old west. The people they meet are interesting and funny. I like the way Jenn builds the puzzle for the reader's to figure out who dunnit and just when you think you've got it, the puzzle changes.

Get the book, read the book, you'll love the book.

I won an ARC of this book from the author in a Twitter giveaway.

This was quite enjoyable. The change in setting was great, especially since they were at a rodeo. Having everyone together 24x7 made for a more interesting time as well. The characters are very well developed and pretty realistic. I loved the people of Juniper Pass as well. The murder and mystery were great. I was shocked at the outcome but it rang so true. Very good read.

It's too hot for people to buy cupcakes, so the Fairy Tale Cupcakes, in the person of Angie, Mel, Tate and their staff, accept an invitation to join the vendors at a rodeo. Business picks up, but troubles pile up when there's an attempt to sabotage the bakery's mobile truck, and Angie and Mel stumble over a dead body. Romantic entanglements are straightened out, too.

Cute series...have enjoyed all the books...like the cupcake recipes...have tried a few of them...like the main characters and their friendship...books don't require any deep thought...purely entertainment and waiting for the next one! It is a little annoying that she reviews all the characters etc... In every book...makes them repetitive...but quick easy reads..,might try her other series while I'm waiting for the next book in this one...
Cindy
I think this series just keeps getting better! Looking forward to the next one. I love all the characters and would love to work at a cupcake bakery, sounds like fun. This was a bit different since they now have a bakery van and went to a rodeo to sell cupcakes. Excellent book!!!

I finished this one too. I have enjoyed all of the books by this author, but this one was not as good as the others. I really like Mel, Angie, and Tate, but I really did not like Angie in this one. I really like them and was not happy with Angie being so grouchy and snippy to her friends. Angie is the one with the "I'm not going to put up with anyone who treats my friends or family bad" attitude, but she was the one treating them bad in this one. Of course I like Joe and Captain Jack also. It wa...more

Still one of the best American cozy series around. This time with just enough mystery twists and character development to make it a favorite.

Read the series in order. The books are light and fluffy and creamy with just the right amount of sugar to make them perfect.

The cupcake bakers hit the road when business slows down at the store. Selling cupcakes at a rodeo seems like a good idea...at the time. Of course the girls, along with Oz and Marty, become involved in a murder and drama ensues. A fun quick afternoon read. 3 stars

Jenn McKinlay's cupcake bakery mysteries are unique and fun to read. They are all a great change of pace with cute characters and mysteries that trick the readers until the end. I never knew how to make the current trend of "cake pops" until I read this book!
Lindsay
Didn't really like this one. I used to like the characters but now they are kind of annoying. Plus all the cupcake talk makes me hungry. In this book the gang goes to a rodeo to sell their goodies. Someone gets murdered and the girls find themselves solving the mystery. Pretty boring.
Jennifer
Jenn McKinlay has created some well rounded characters with Mel, Angie, and Tate, and taking them on the road in their new cupcake truck is a great way to expand the scenery and give this 4th book a little more zest.
