The story starts off with an atmospheric scenario. I was immersed throughout, the pace moved up notches right up to the ending where a highly tense situation takes place. He's created a suspenseful murder tale of what could happen to a young woman when she moves to a closed knitted town to teach and starts a lie. Then another person lies and then another and before you know it, you find yourself in a whole heap of trouble.

"Hell, this was all because of a lie gone wrong."

So far, this is one of the worst books I've ever read. Very poorly written ("nip this in the butt" ... was this book run past an editor before publication?) with characters who act in completely unbelievable ways. I'm going to keep reading because other reviews are so good, I feel like maybe I'm missing something? Maybe there is some redemption? There is promise of suspense (1/4 of the way in and no hint of it yet) and twists. The only suspense up to this point is wondering how long before this...more

White Lies by Jeremy Bates tells the timeless story that all mothers impart to their children; “you tell one lie and you’ll end up telling another lie to support it.” That it is always better to tell the truth because you’ll remember the truth but eventually find yourself over your head when you tell a lie. The story starts when thirty-ish English teacher Katrina Burton driving to a small and charming village tucked away deep in the Mountains of eastern Washington, where she is to begin a new jo...more

While I'm not normally a fan of Suspense/Thriller novels, White Lies by Jeremy Bates was an exceptional read. Not sure how to avoid a cliche here, because I literally could not put it down.

A dark stormy night, alone on a mountain highway, Katrina Burton does something that she normally never does. She picks up a hitchhiker. Filled with regret the minute the passenger door slams shut, Katrina goes on to do something totally against her character, she tells a 'little white lie' to get rid of her t...more

Review of White Lies by Jeremy Bates

“White Lies” is an amazing novel. I literally locked my door and did not stir away from my Kindle Fire until I had finished it-and then wished I could reread it immediately. I can’t rave enough about this book, except to say that it ought to be read by every aficionado of mystery, thriller, suspense-and by every student of writing. How could this novel be improved? I don’t believe it could be-I found it perfect as it is. The tension escalates to unbearable lev...more

Reason for Reading: The hitchhiker angle always intrigues me and the author's Canadian background interested me as well. Sounded like it would be a good read.

Right from the beginning we are placed with Katrina in a creepy situation as she picks up a hitchhiker only to find herself frightened and intimidated into throwing the man out of the car in the middle of a storm. Katrina is a likable main character right from the start, though she has a penchant for making decisions the reader may not alwa...more

White Lies is a story of chaos, emotion, and suspense. The book is about choices and what-if’s. The main character, Katrina Burton, faces a series of choices in her life. One small lie leads to more small lies, resulting in a catastrophic series of events that spiral out of her control. As she is driving to her new job as a teacher, she picks up a hitchhiker who gives her the creeps. She has every right to be fearful so she tells a false truth to get him out of her car, never expecting to meet h...more

Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive. This is the moral of this story and it is pounded into your head again and again.

I debated between 2 and 3 stars, 2 1/2 being my actual choice, but since I couldn't do that I rounded up. The story was interesting enough to keep me reading but I found the characters to be two-dimensional at best.

The book opens with a young woman driving alone through the Cascades. It was a dark and stormy night. Really. She comes across a hitchhik...more

There's an important lesson learned from this book. Telling white lies can come back and bite you in the ass...in a huge way.

At first, I didn't know what to think when I started reading. I thought it was going to just be a book about a woman being stalked by a guy she told a little fib too, which enraged him and turned him into a stalking psychopath. Man, was I ever wrong. Instead, the plot became a miasma of white lies snowballing one right after another. I can't go into much detail because I...more

This book is a "thriller," a genre I usually avoid but here I made an exception because this was the Amazon kindle daily deal and was set in Leavenworth, WA. I can't resist books set in Washington, and was especially curious to see how accurately Leavenworth was portrayed since we spent a summer living there when I was a kid.

What I liked: the plot and pacing grabbed me and I read this book in one day. Points for that! It's about a woman who moves to Leavenworth to start a teaching job, but on he...more

White Lies is, quite possibly, one of the top fifty books I've read in this genre. Top fifty sounds like a large grouping, but its less years than my unrevealed age, and I am a compulsive reader of the genre. Put that together, and Jeremy Bates' White Lies has rocketed to the top over thousands of others.

There are enough reviewers here who have given you snippets of the book in their own word's or Bates', so I'll just go straight to it: You need to buy this book. The tension builds from an entir...more

Katrina Burton is traveling to a new job teaching high school English at Cascade High School in Leavenworth, Washington. The last thing that ever occurred to Katrina was that this new life would start out with a white lie leading to another lie and another lie up to the point where Katrina finds herself lying to protect a murderer.

It all starts innocently enough when Katrina picks up a strange man on her way to Leavenworth. Katrina was well aware of the dangers of picking up strangers but the we...more

One teeny little fib. It's no big deal, right? You pick up a hitchhiker during a torrential downpour, and even though he doesn't say anything threatening and even though he doesn't do anything threatening, you still just want to get him out of your car. So you lie. You say you're getting off at the next exit, 30 miles from your true destination.

No big deal, right?

Oh, it most certainly is a big deal in Jeremy Bates' White Lies, in which Katrina Burton's little white lie snowballs into a web of di...more

A real page turner - one of those fast paced thrillers where you keep thinking "Nooo don't DO that" as the main character makes yet another bad decision you just know is going to impact by making things get worse - and worse.

I chose this from the books available to review at Netgalley and yet again was really pleased with my choice. I read this in just 2 days which is pretty good going for me - it doesn't mean it was a light, inconsequential read - just that I felt the need to keep reading ... j...more

What a roller-coaster. 'White Lies' by Jeremy Bates catches you off-guard with its very title - who amongst us has not told a white lie or three? We understand it, condone it, excuse it. But deep down we know that even white lies are just that - lies. So when the main character in this novel, Katrina, utters the first one, one knows things are just going to spiral out of control. Sounds familiar?

This is any person's worst nightmare - our selective reasoning catching up with us, and involving oth...more

This book had me from the beginning. Katrina lets a hitchhiker into her car and it turns out to be a disaster. She later finds out he's a teacher at the same school where she is teaching. Things get pretty tense between them and conflict ensues.

Then Katrina meets mystery man Jack. He's seems too good to be true. He's sweet, caring, and becomes her rock. He even gets her out of her little white lie. When they decide to host a party everything that was going so well suddenly collapses around th...more

From my blog

A simple innocent lie meets professional lies ending with murder. This was a thrilling novel, fast paced edge of your seat build up, pace is a strong point of Jeremy Bates. For those that enjoy Adult Fiction but want to try a Thriller go for this.

My main issue is the hitchhiking, who the hell still picks up hitchhikers this day in age. I am sorry, completely unbelievable which made me have the oh whatever feel while reading. And then it is Katrina's first day on the job and she reali...more

What began as a light-hearted book quickly turned into an action-packed story of murder and deception. And I am still recovering from the ride! This is a book that took so many twists and turns, and it was crafted extremely well.

I was instantly drawn in since Katrina is a schoolteacher, and the story takes place in Leavenworth, Washington. It was nice to read about familiar environment and workplace. I actually got a good chuckle as Katrina's expense as her web of lies began to entrap her. In m...more

Have you ever told a white lie…you know, to your mum when you’ve lied about where you’ve been, or to your husband about how much you spent on that divine pair of shoes, or to your employers about that cold that you—ahem—suddenly developed that Friday you wanted off work? Just a little white lie to get out of a sticky situation? Harmless? Perhaps, but it doesn’t quite work out that way for Katrina Burton…

In this an outstanding novel by Jeremy Bates, in which a seemingly harmless lie has unimagin...more

You tell one lie...you can always correct yourself if you want, but if you keep telling lies well....
This story grabs you from the get go. You have to keep reading, the characters that Mr. Bates has created just scream "Guess what I'm going to do next!".
Katrina is a bit of a push over and it's understandable being that she hasn't really lived life for the past two years, but man oh man (LOL)!

I received a copy of White Lies" by Jeremy Bates through the Goodreads Giveaway Contest.

I loved this book . I was gripped right from the get go, and I couldn't put it down. The chapters were short, and I found I was nervously flipping the page to see what was going to happen next.

Katrina Burton was driving from Seattle along the Cascade Mountain Range in Northern Washington in a heavy downpour. She was heading to Leavenworth, where she had been offered a job teaching high school English. Her trave...more

This had a great original premise-but I had trouble understanding some of the decisions made by the main character, a supposedly responsible high school teacher. Katrina is moving to a small town 2 hours from Seattle for a new start. She has buried her fiancee and mourned for some time. On her drive in a storm, she picks up a hitchhiker; he's drunk and she lies to him about where she lives to get him out of the car--but he is a teacher at her new high school! One little lie leads to some funny m...more

Along the way Katrina picks up a hitchhiker whom she soon fears is drunk and dangerous. Becoming fearful for her safety, the first white lie slips from her lips unaware of the consequences to come... Who would have thought in a million years that hitchhiker would turn out to be a fellow teacher at her new school? Caught between...more

In order to enjoy this book at all you have to suspend your disbelief that 1) one lie told merely to get a Creepy McCreeperton out of her car would end up creating this much of a hullabaloo and 2) when given a chance to correct the 1st lie with little to no consequences the protagonist would choose to just tell another lie. If you can get beyond that, and the idea that the protagonist is totally fine with leaving her dog alone in the house for 24 hours just so she can party with a dude she just...more

Before I start, I have to say this has been a summer like no other...I received this book in early August and as soon as I could I was digging into this book...I had a feeling it was going to be right up my alley and had pretty high hopes for it. A few chapters into it and realized that I going to love it. I'm wondering if King and Koontz were inspirations to Bates, as the first chapter gave me chills! Suddenly, life seemed to get in t...more
