My face is on every television, in every newspaper. They say I’m saving the world. I know better. I’m a school principal not a superhero.

Of course that doesn’t explain the blood on my hands. Or the strange languages coming out of my mouth. Or the feel of swinging a machete. Or the sensation of lifting off the ground before I lose all memory.

Embattled tells the story of Miracle Madame, a woman who begins showing up during acts of violence against the oppressed all over the globe. She walks in to the middle of a conflict without being harmed and miraculously stops the violence by persuading armies, oppressors, and murderers of all types to give up their weapons and negotiate peace. No one know who she, where she came from or how she does it. Not even Miracle Madame.

Em sits at her desk, her hands soaked in blood. No wounds, no pain, and no idea where the blood came from. The reds and greens swirling across her computer screen scream jungle battle. She’s certain she was there. Fighting through the jungle to stop a battle, storming into a courtroom to save the accused, facing a firing squad of armed ruffians… Are her “three wishes” coming true? And, Yves? He is there to arm her with special powers, to send her into battle, to watch over her. His first ...more

I don’t usually read science fiction or fantasy. In fact, it’s the last thing I’d choose to read. However, I read Darlene’s biography and wondered how she was able to solve her heartbreak over wanting to help the people she met while living in Mali many years ago.

Through the other worldly powers of Em, or Miracle Madam as the world comes to know her, the reader travels to the worst corners of hell that exist right here on Earth. From Africa to Europe and back again to the gangland streets of Lo

The plot this story was very interesting, and I stay interested throughout the entire book. The characters held their own personalities, own quirks, that really made them stand out for me; allowed me to care for them.

I was confused at first, as this book switches POV between the "Madam of Miracles" and a "Drone", an otherworldly entity. The hard part here, wasn't the switch perse, it was the fact that one part was in third person, while the other was in first. And there wasn't much transition be

I started and finished Embattled in a day. The book is a page-turner, full of passion. There's never any doubt about the will of the book to carry you on. Yes, places confused me, the nature of the transitions and transformations could bear clarification, but the story is clear. Not simple, however. We've all wished to own powers like Em's in the causes of justice and equality, but even in the beginning there arise hints that the cost will be reckoned and come high. Em struggles between her joy ...more

Science fiction is not a genre I would choose to read often, I'm wary of outlandish aliens and intergalactic battles - not that there is anything wrong with them, they're just not for me.
Imagine my delight at this multi-layered story, very intelligently told. Em is a Miracle Worker,, a super hero, controlled and directed by the other-worldly Guardian who watches over her. At first she is confused and bewildered by the realisation that she is leading a double life, as a teacher and then, in an in

Science Fiction, a little romance, a love triangle between human, miracle worker and an inexperienced puppet master all trying to make the harsh reality of Earth a better place to live.
This was a very interesting book, but I felt like I had ADD, keeping up with all of the story lines that were running simultaneously. You have Earth 1- where Em has her real life, Earth 2-Madame Miracle’s reality, then somewhere out there- where the Guardians reside and the Powers tinker with humanity. Traveling

Harsh reality, a little magic and a lot of imagination - Miracle Madam (Em) is born. She has two levels of existence, two very different worlds. In one she's a teacher, in the other she's guided by a Drone named Yves. He's been appointed by the Guardians to be a Power, merely to prove they aren't biased even though they firmly believe that Drones are stupid by nature. In Em's second existence in a flash she's neutralising junta leaders, then facilitating relief workers in areas devastated by a ...more

Em's wishes have come true. She wants to make a difference in this life and make Earth a better place to live. Supreme beings have given her amazing powers and although she doesn’t, at first, know where these powers came from or why she was chosen, she thrives in her new role. As a miracle worker, she is universally adored, but two men come to love her for herself. The developing love triangle brings chaos. Embattled will have you turning pages as your emotions become entangled with those of the ...more

I haven't read a book in a long time, but once I picked this one up I couldn't put it down. From a man's point of view, I found the heroine refreshing. The story line had some surprising twists and enlightening views of world conditions. This is more than a love story and not at all what you might expect of a sci-fi.

This is a very imaginative story that goes back and forth in different worlds and timezones, which can get a bit confusing with the shifting point of view but if you stick with it, you end up enjoying the story. If you love magic and sci-fi, you will enjoy this book.

Embattled is a beautifully written and engaging sci-fi fantasy novel that delights the senses. The characters are well formed and presented and the reader is in the story from the beginning. This is a wonderful read and I highly recommend it to all who enjoy this genre.

Embattled is an extremely imaginative and enjoyable read. Darlene writes well and the fanciful, imaginative love story is engaging and unique. Em the main character strives to make the world a better place, and falls in love during her adventure. An extremely enjoyable adult fairy tale!
