He counts her smiles every day and night at the train station. And morning and evening, the beautiful commuter acknowledges him—just like she does everyone else on the platform. But Blake Hartt is not like the others . . . he’s homeless. Memories of a broken childhood have robbed him of peace and twisted delusions into his soul. He stays secluded from the sun, sure the wor...more

Poughkeepsie
By Debra Anastasia

*scrubs hand over face* WOW!!

I'm not sure I can adequately tell you how much I absolutely adored this book!

I have read some pretty great books, and I have read some amazing books this year. Opinions are always subjective and in my opinion this book fell into the amazing group. This was the kind of book that made me look back and rethink some of the 5 stars I have given this year when I actually just want to give this book mor...more

There has been a great discussion in the comments about pulled Fanfictions and whether they are morally reprehensible for their past or should be judged based on their quality and degree of separation from their source material.
Unfortunately this book fails both tests. Yes, it is a reworked fanfiction. I was willing to maybe put that aside if it was good because I remember the relationship dynamic and characters being very different from the source material and, indeed, being very different from...more

I originally read this book several months ago, and have been struggling with how to write a review that properly conveys just how special this book is. And just how much this story, and each and every character has come to mean to me.

Blake has been watching Livia from the shadows of the Poughkeepsie train station for months. He loves her from afar, and counts each of the smiles she bestows upon him as she makes her way to and from work each day. Her smiles are full of kindness, and not pity. He...more

"Every time I think I couldn’t love you a bit more, you stretch my heart again.”

The first half of this book was wonderful- it made me want to give the book 5 stars. The story hooked me from the beginning, I loved the characters, and the writing style was beautiful. But I felt the second half of the story was brought down by all the drama. There was too much it – it needed more editing! I'd probably give the second half 3-3.5 stars. I felt that the story kind of exploded, it became a little l...more

I truly adored this story! Poughkeepsie takes us on a rocky, inspirational journey of faithwhere characters struggle to overcome personal demons brought on by damaging childhoods and social injustices. As delicate as this story seems, there are surprisingly many laugh-out-loud moments-- courtesy of its very quirky, tormented, and lovable characters.

Livia is a student who boards a train each morning where she sees Blake, a beautiful, mysterious homeless man to whom she offers an honest smile da...more

Updated 10/9/12: I would like to point out that I read and reviewed this book in late 2011, upon its publication before the mass exodus of Twilight fanfics into publication as 'original' fiction. My opinion in regards to P2P has since changed and I no longer condone nor support the practice, no matter how much I loved the fanfic from where it came.

I have shelved this as rewritten fanfiction. I read the original fic online when it was Edward and Bella, and Jasper and Alice, and Emmett and Rosalie...more

Us being in the same atmosphere is either a great cosmic catastrophe or the most serendipitous rendezvous.

... you make the rest of the beautiful things in this world cry for even trying at all. You make it hard for me to breathe.

Wow! What a fantastic story!

It’s books like Poughkeepsie that make me rethink who really owns the publishing stage now-a-days. There seems to be more and more hidden gems either being self-published or picked up by the smaller houses that are starting to cause a major...more

You know I'm not even sure what to write. What I do know, is that I love Debra, and I love her writing. I was so excited when Debra sent me a copy of Poughkeepsie so that I wouldn't miss out on the chance of reading it. I'm so glad she did, because I loved it. I loved every minute of this book. I was on a pretty emotional roller coaster during.

I loved the whole concept of this story. A seemingly normal girl, Livia, befriends a known homeless man who counts her smiles everyday. What starts as a...more

***UPDATE***
I read this book one year ago (almost to the date!) and I have to tell you, this book has stuck with me. I've gotten to know the writer, and she's a big ol' bag of awesome, but that's not why this book is honestly one of my favorites.
I haven't read it in a year, but it's my next read in my TBR pile. I almost NEVER reread a book, mostly because I have a Kindle library of about 5000 books. Rereading takes time away from new adventures. HOWEVER, Poughkeepsie is one of those stories tha...more

This is hands down my favorite book of 2011... Poughkeepsie is hard to review because it's beauty and love will outshine any of my words. I can't do it justice or ever express the emotions it evoked in me. Here is my humble attempt...

When you first meet Livia she's just this grad student catching the train at the Poughkeepsie station. Livia smiles at everyone, she's one of those souls that does not hold back her happiness and on of those lucky smile catchers is Blake. He sees Livia board and exi...more

Update as of October 26, 2012. Just want to publicly state that since reading this book (in late 2011) I have had to make a decision about my personal opinion on pulling fanfiction to publish for money. And I have come down on the side of Not Okay. Hard. This book came out before the Twilight fanfiction fandom exploded with greed and as I hadn't been able to read it as a fic, I bought and loved the book. Today, I would not have bought it. This practice has broken the fandom in two, and has broke...more

Poughkeepsie is a contemporary romance/drama written by Debra Anastasia. I read this as a R2R with Basically Books! As always, a huge thank you to the wonderful mods and the author for allowing me to participate.

Short Synopsis:
The synopsis by the author does a better job than I could, so I’ll just get on to the review.

Damn, I knew it was a bad idea to finally read this book- for now I am so very sad that it's over...
This was the best book I've read in years. It's poetic, full of tears and laughter, unforgettable characters- it's just plain beautiful. Blake makes my favorite hero: beta and blond, and he has flawless manners to top the package off.
This book is about love, about its many faces, and it describes it so beautiful you can feel it in every sentence. If there ever was a book that deserves to be called...more

"Blake doesn't ask her for money. He doesn't know her name. All he wants to do is... count her smiles."

The book was all the things I wanted to read. I can't be any happier to say that I'm glad I picked it up. I saw the trailer video first and just halfway through the video I was teary-eyed! :P
Poughkeepsie is surely one of my favorites, because:

- It is a very unique novel. There are books which follow the same old story line and just change the characters, but Poughkeepsie was something...more

Livia takes the train to work every day and smiles at everyone...even the homeless guy. One day, he is being bullied and Livia steps up to help him and her life changes from that moment on.

Wow...this book is sooo much more that I thought it would be and sooo different. Yes, it is a love story with a homeless guy but you have to give it a chance. It will be worth it.

Blake is sweet and kind and romantic but he has some problems. It's a bit scary for Livia but she follows her heart e...more

I’m not sure how to rate this book. I did like it but at the same time it was too much for one book. I think the author should have had a book for each couple.
I originally thought the book was about Livia and Blake. They were the two main characters for about 40% into the book and then before I knew it everybody and their brother, literally, came into the picture and took over.

I do have to say though that I was very happy Beckett was brought into the light because Dayyyuummm! I absolutely LOVE...more

"No one has really seen me in years.” Blake looked at the sky. “Sometimes I wonder how they know I don’t have a home. I try to dress decently.” He waved a hand at his jeans and army jacket. “I think it just seeps out of me. I’m not the same as everyone else.” He shook his head, pulling himself out of his despair, and looked at Livia again. “But when you saw me for the first time, you actually saw me. You saw me, and then you smiled like I was just the same as everyone else on that platform."

My 5 stars are precious to me but this came extremely close.

I had butterflies in my tummy for all 3 couples in this book....yes all three because the surrounding characters in this book are just as important and wonderful as Blake & Livia.

Blake is so damaged but oh so sweet with an underlying strength that becomes apparent when anyone looks at Livia wrong. He has to be one of the most romantic leads ever and without spending a single penny!

Livia is a really likable heroine, she's no...more

Absolutely riveting!

I cannot begin to describe the feelings that consumed me when I finished this story. From the book summary, I thought this story was just about two characters forming an unlikely bond. What you really get is an engrossing story line with a cast of well-developed characters. The plot is compelling and kept me reading to find out what happens next! I ended up caring and relating to the characters who I know will stay with me for a very long time. There is angst, suspense, viole...more

Thank goodness for my registration to the 'Goodreads' website, and the forums on there, otherwise I would never have heard of Poughkeepsie or this amazing author.

This book takes the reader on a rollercoaster journey, and from the first page it spellbounds you into a compelling tale of twists and turns, primarily one of love between two beautiful souls, Livia and Blake. Parts are very humourous and others incredibly violent. You have been warned!

The love story itself sets the precident of how far...more

This book has True Grit!!!

This bk get's 4 1/2 stars i enjoyed it very much!
Poughkeepsie was far far from what i was expecting. You see the bk summary is just a small glimmer of what you get out of this story. Wow! What an absolutely fantastic book!! I'm just sitting here with this glow after finishing the book. This is the first book I've read by this author and I will definitely add her to my favorite authors and automatic buys.

Livia smiles at everyone while she waits for the train including the homeless man who sits by the side. He is invisible to almost everyone, them not wanting to make eye contact, except Livia, and her smiles mean more than she can know. When some teenagers start to harass him,...more

Poughkeepsie is a charming story that I can't seem to get enough of. Having a homeless man as a love interest is quite a novelty since most of the romance novels I've read recently have featured billionaire alpha males. But Blake Hartt is certainly at par (and even surpasses the other protagonists)in the beauty of his gentle spirit and sincerity of heart. I also love that he is characterized as a passionate and veritable gentleman. Though, as Livia said, "He was a gentleman, but not necessarily...more

Several friends suggested reading this book, and I'm glad I did. I'm not a fan of the 'typical' romance novel, with overblown imagery and aptly-named characters. When I saw the main character's name was 'Blake Hartt' I almost put it down. I'm glad I didn't.

It's a well-crafted love story with just enough angst. And although I enjoyed the push/pull of the main characters, I think the tertiary characters are what truly make this story stand out. Mouse is by far the most interesting character I've s...more

I wasn't sure what to write in my review... How do you describe a book that's so different from anything you've read before? So I started reading other people's comments, and WOW. I was shocked, and horrified....to discover I had just read fan fiction. No way! I actually LIKED this book! And I HATE fan fiction!

So I have to let anyone here know, who is considering this book but remains undecided, just go for it. This book isn't recognizable as fan fiction at all. In fact I think it stands alone...more

Debra Anastasia is busy, just like every other mom. There's dinner, the dogs, the kids, and their homework. The laundry pile turns into a big, heaping monster. When the clothes finally make it into the washer, it gets unbalanced and puts on an elaborate show before it cuts out. This crazy job that never ends is her first love and her crowning achievement.

Her writing started a decent handful of yea...more
