I was in the mood for a good quick romance, and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this debut from Johns’.

Peppa really doesn’t want to tell her boss that she side-swiped his car while dressed as a fairy at the Holiday party, but she knows that she can’t NOT tell him. When Cameron tells her that he wants her to come as his date to another Christmas part, in lieu of having to pay for the damages to his car, Peppa agrees somewhat reluctantly.

Although Cameron isn’t looking for anything serious, there is something about Peppa that calls to him, that has him keep coming back for more. And while Peppa is looking for a family and partner, she is somewhat disheartened by Cameron’s inability to figure out what exactly he wants from her. But when Peppa has a seriously health issue, will Cameron realize just how much he wants everything she can offer?

I really enjoyed this book, and even though there are some typical romance plots, it didn’t feel like a re-used theme. And while this story is only about 100 pages or so, it felt like there was so much more to the story than what is typically in a 100 page novella. There was so much emotional drama in this story, and it pulled me in and kept me engaged from the first page.

I was so impressed with how well Johns’ portrayed the hero and heroine. I honestly fell for both Cameron and Peppa right away. There was so much more to each character than we initially see. I loved that as Peppa helped Cameron peel back the layers, more and more about his character is revealed, and my heart kept going out to him. I’m a big fan of having our heroes be a little tortured, and when it’s over the heartache of loosing his first true love, that made him all the more loveable in my eyes.

Like Cameron, Peppa had been through something horrific as well. When she realizes that despite everything her dream is coming true, she doesn’t waste anytime with lies or doubts. Instead, she goes for it all and lives everything to the fullest. There wasn’t one minute when I wasn’t rooting for her one hundred percent.

I thought that the romance was great as well. What started as a practical joke that Cameron was playing on his family turned into a hot and steamy night together. From there the sexual tension gave way to a fun and flirty friendship. And while Peppa was falling in love, Cameron was doing everything he could not to, and failing horribly at it. Once these two finally declared their love, it was a beautiful moment.

All in all I really enjoyed the debut novel from Rachel Johns. The characters were extremely well developed, the romance was a wonderful journey and the story was sweet and sexy all at once. I will be looking forward to more from this author in the future.

OMG!! THAT was a super sexy read. One of my favorite plots beside friends to lovers is the "I need a girlfriend/wife for (insert reason)" They just really work for me. I just love to see all the funny, crazy things that happen along the way to them discovering they can't live without the other :)

After spending the night together they embark on a passionate love affair and I found myself rooting for them and keen that everything should work out between them. However they both have had a lot of pain in their lives due to previous relationships and Peppa has health issues that have left her heartbroken. I was surprised at how quickly I connected with Peppa and Cameron and I liked them very much. Their characters had depth and they were both struggling to come to terms with previous events in their lives and the issues that were preventing them from moving forward and being able to have proper relationships again. Cameron is smouldering, sexy and Peppa is fun and determined.

Considering that this is only 100 pages long, there was a lot packed in and honestly, I could have carried on reading about Peppa and Cameron. I really enjoyed seeing their relationship move from an initial lust driven night of passion into a relationship that works through the pain they’ve suffered and into a place of trust and love. I’d certainly be interested to read anything else by Rachael Johns in the future.

Verdict: A lot of book for its size! A great read with really likeable characters.

When he approaches her he has not idea she is actually one of his employees, but he is very intrigued by her. Although he is not pleased when she admits to accidentally causing damage to his car, but spotting his moment to get to know her further he asks her to go with him to his family's party. Peppa is very, very attracted to Cameron, but is still getting over a difficult break-up and reluctant to get involved. However, neither of them can deny the desire simmering between them and they end up spending the night together, which quickly turns into an agreed short term affair. As Peppa and Cameron grow closer, Peppa becomes more and more frustrated by Cameron's refusal to open up emotionally to her. And Cameron feels the ever growing involvement with Peppa is a betrayal to his late wife. Everything comes crashing down eventually, with devastating results.

I thought this book was brilliant, and I enjoyed every word of it. This book is so much more than the title and blurb leads you to believe; it is deep, wrought with emotion and passion, as well as being touching, funny and flirty. The plot itself is a well used one, but Rachael Johns has managed to 'modern-it-up', with some individual touches and a writing style that makes me smile. Both the hero and heroine are well matched and there is plenty of pizazz to their individual personalities. Peppa is particularly appealing as she has plenty of sass (and I am so glad she stood up to the hero and kicked him out during a certain scene! I like my heroines to have a backbone!).
The issues raised, such as night terrors, bereavement, infertility, are handled well but don't overcrowd the actual story. This gives the book depth and a nice balance with the focus still on the romance.

This is a fun book to read, yet also very emotional. I think the word 'lovely' suits this book perfectly! I can't wait to read future stuff from Rachael.

This was not her lucky day. On her way into the party, she had side-swiped the Head Honcho's vintage Lamborghini, and there was no way her insurance was going to cover the damage. And she was going to have to 'fess up to her "crime" dressed up as an "elf" to a man the female employees nicknamed "McSexy". And Peppa was in no way immune to his charms.

Cameron McCormac didn't need any financial assistance to help repair the damage to his Lamborghini. Money was not a problem. What he really needed was a date to his family's Christmas party that evening to stave off his relatives well-meaning but futile attempts to fix him up with someone. He hadn't been interested in anyone since his wife died three years ago, but he was definitely interested in the fairy girl in her too-short tutu and red fishnet stockings. Very, very interested. Cameron offered Peppa a deal, accompany him to his family's annual Christmas, and he'd forget about the car. Peppa couldn't even afford to replace the hubcaps on a Lamborghini. She took the deal.

Nothing that evening was what either of them expected. Especially when the evening ended in Peppa's bed. But after one perfect night together, what happens when both of them want more, even though neither of them expect that it can possibly work out?

Escape Rating B: This story turned out to have much more to it than I expected, especially for a 100 page story. Peppa and Cameron are both characters who have been hurt badly, and both have come to expect absolutely nothing from relationships, even to expect not to have relationships. They know they should not get involved. And yet they do. Everything is tentative and scary for both of them, and the author does a very good job of portraying the "two steps forward, one step back" nature of this type of relationship. Well done.(less)

One Perfect Night was a really sweet and fast paced story. I read it in one sitting and loved every minute of it. I love getting lost inside a good contemporary romance, and I did just that with this book. It’s super funny and emotional at times. I truly enjoyed getting to know Cameron and Peppa and watch their love blossom. The way they meet was hilarious and the whole encounter had me laughing out loud.

This book from the beginning to the end is what I would say a true romance novel worth reading. The two main characters are both dealing with loss, pain and hurt, Cameron is dealing with the loss of his wife and is very scared to open up his heart again. This was a delightful short novel by an author I’d never read before. I’ve really enjoyed reading the Australian authors published by Carina Press, and Rachel Johns was no exception. In fact, I was a bit surprised that this book was published by Carina Press, rather than being published in print as a category romance by one of the Harlequin lines (Carina Press is owned by Harlequin). One Perfect Night has several of the hallmark tropes that you see in a category romance: boss-employee romance, hero devastated by wife’s death and refusing to love again, plus a traumatic event that spurs hero to realize his love for the heroine. And while the set-up and resolution of the romance in One Perfect Night sound somewhat clichéd, the unique setting and likeable characters make this a fun, light-hearted romance well worth reading.

Peppa Grant works for Lyrique Recordings, an audiobook company, and when the company’s family Christmas party is about to tank because the Santa has been delayed, Peppa steps in as the entertainer for the kids in a rented fairy costume. She’s a bit stressed, because she just sideswiped the boss’s very expensive sports car but hasn’t had time to tell him about it. Lyrique’s CEO, Cameron McCormac, is already in a bit of a foul mood, because he’s spending time around all the families at the party, forcing him to remember his frustrated plans to start a family four years ago. The widower is also dreading his family’s Christmas party after the work function, but the children’s entertainer in her short faerie skirt is exactly the distraction he needs.

When Peppa tells Cormac that she bumped his car and needs to exchange insurance information, he seizes the opportunity to have her pretend to be his date to his family’s party, not realizing that Peppa’s one of his employees. Her presence at the family party will prevent any pesky questions about his dating life and forestall any attempts to set him up with other women. Of course, Peppa’s a smashing success with his family, which creates more complications down the road, especially since Cormac’s determined to get Peppa in bed but only wants a fling. Peppa wants nothing more than to settle down and start a family. With two such disparate interests, can their affair ever turn into anything more?

The novel is only about 100 pages long, but it packs a lot into such a short book. Both the hero and the heroine have heartbreaking pasts, yet the book doesn’t get bogged down in all the angst, which is a relief. Peppa’s ex is a real stinker, yet she’s still hopeful for the future, even though she feels as though she’s been put through the ringer. She’s very likeable, and while you can see that an affair with Cormac can only lead to heartbreak in her future, you’ll be rooting for everything to work out between them.

Cormac, or “McSexy” as the women in the office call him, also has a painful past, which makes him a brooding, troubled hero – no doubt that adds to his appeal! His wife’s death 4 years ago still haunts him, but it’s a pleasure to see Peppa bringing fun back into his life. He manages to be a bit bone-headed a few times, but everything all works out for the best.

All in all, this was a fun debut novel with a lot of promise. I’m looking forward to reading more of Ms. Johns’ books, especially since the Australian setting plays such a prominent role in the book. I’d love to see her books in print, as I think One Perfect Night would make an excellent category romance.

but YEAH Here I am, finished this book.

I loved this book from start to finish! It is romantic, Christmassy and has great emotional depth. You could understand where both of the main characters were coming from and could feel their pain. This book is well written with the characters properly developed. It has an engaging story line that kept me completely absorbed. If you ask me to describe this book, I’ll say that it’s sexy, hot and yet not trashy. I like how the author describe the sizzling relationship between the characters and I like how sexual tension slowly builds up between the two.

A job well done by the author, I must say, and I certainly wouldn’t mind reading this book anytime soon. I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.

Shelves: widower-widow, pregnant, infertility, employee, disappointed

This just didnt live up to the blurb. I was so excited to get it but none of it clicked for me. The h was a little too strong for me but a lot of readers will love her backbone (I dont want a doormat but I wish she would have been more emotional) The H I didnt click with either.. The writing style was too romantic comedy/chick-lit/women's lit for me.
