Ik had deel 2 (Lilith) al gelezen voor een recensie en was daar erg enthousiast over. Het was los goed leesbaar, maar je merkte wel dat je hier en daar wat achtergrond miste. Ik ben blij dat ik deel 1 nu ook gelezen heb, hoewel het minder indruk maakte dan Lilith. Het verhaal was iets minder uitgebalanceerd. Loved that book from the first page on! Although the author has been criticized for borrowing and even stealing material, in my opinion Lycidas is a brilliant combination of familiar themes. The book melts together classic stories, characters, figures... a bit like a good curry or a nice blended whiskey. Ich hatte mich so auf dieses Buch gefreut und wollte es so gerne moegen, aber es ging einfach nicht o_O
Das Setting ist toll und die Geschichte (die Frage nach dem was da in der Metropole vor sich geht) an sich ist ok. Eigentlich relativ typische Urban Fantasy, nicht das Beste was ich bisher aus dem Genre gelesen habe, aber auch nicht schlecht. Zum Vergleich, die Fever-Reihe (Im Bann des Vampirs) oder October Daye-Reihe (Winterfluch) haben mir sehr viel besser gefallen.

Dies gleich vorweg: Dem Buch wird wohl in einigen Reviews vorgeworfen, ganz schön von Gaimans Neverwhere abzukupfern. Da ich Neverwhere noch nicht gelesen habe, kamen da bei mir keine vergleichenden Gedanken auf. It's hard to actually describe this book and why I like it.
Neverwhere is probably one of my favourite books by Neil Gaiman and the world of this book is very similar to the world of Neverwhere. There is the London Below here called the ancient metropolis, there are similar creatures, a darkish atmosphere like in Gaiman stroies and allusions to Milton, a fallen angel... All that are obvious elements that made me think of Neverwhere while reading this.

Ich bin bei diesem Buch etwas hin- und hergerissen. Die Geschichte hat mich sehr gefesselt. Nur leider war ich teilweise von den ständigen Wiederholungen genervt. Womit ich auch nicht warm geworden bin, ist, dass die Kinder mit "Sie" angeredet wurden. Das ist etwas womit ich einfach nicht kann.
Da mich die GEschichte an sich trotzdem gefesselt hat, werde ich an den anderen beiden Teilen aber nicht vorbei kommen.

A very interesting read, though the constant use of the genitive gets annoying sometimes, especially when used the wrong way. To find lots of quotes - for example from Geothe's "Faust" is somehow like a treat to read on, finding out if there are more parallels or not. "Lycidas" shows pretty well that there is no black and white in the world but that everything is a shade of grey, darker or ligther.

Really dark, complex and well written! I can't believe he's German, somehow I expect less of my people. ;)
If you like fantasy - read it! I love how there seems to be a trend (maybe it always existed, not the expert here) of placing such a story in a big, modern city like New York or in this case London. I like the idea of humans being clueless about the things happening around them. And the urban surroundings go really well with the fantastic elements.

Very good book and is about a little girl of 12 living in London. And then she found out that there is an old town under town. Metropole. I love London and by reading this book I even love London more. Is a wonderful book. Is nice to read how the mythe, history of London is woven in the present.

I hope that some day Marzi's works will be translated into English. I really enjoyed the whole trilogy. I listened to them as audiobooks, so I can highly recommend the audiobooks as well.

Actually liked it better than Gaiman's Neverwhere, which i read afterwards. Marzi builds up a more dense urban atmosphere that i missed in the well-praised "original".

Bezaubernd. Ein sehr gelungenes Fantasybuch aus der Feder eines Deutschen, endlich mal wieder. Es ist so schön und leicht zu lesen, es macht Spaß, Emily zu folgen in die uralte Metropole unter der Metropole. Die Figuren sind toll, man hasst oder liebt sie, ist aber anfangs hin und hergerissen, ob man sie lieben oder hassen soll. Der Plot ist auch gelungen und ich liebe Bücher, in denen auf klassische Literatur (zB Charles Dickens) verwiesen wird, die man selber auch kennt. Ich kann es kaum erwar

I got a free audio version of this book because I bought some magazine that had a voucher in it. Well, I'm glad it was free because I hated the book! It was horribly read which, I admit, can ruin a book that wouldn't be so bad if I read it myself. What really bugged me about it was that so many things were stolen from Neil Gaiman's "Neverwhere", it's such a rip-off, a bad one though because the story, its characters and the way it is told are simply boring.

The beginning is quite irritating, since the narrator is an elf whereas the protagonist is a little girl, which grew up in an orphanage. And sometimes the narrator elf tells about things which he can't even know.
There are lots of small children dissapearing in London, and she tries to figure out why. Although she has no real reason to do so - besides, she just figured out she is a trickster and can see through other peaoples eyes ...

Just love this book. Read it already 3 times and I never get bored. I hear that some people are annoyed by the fact that she always says 'U', but I liked that. It gives this book such an original twist :) It's totally my taste and I can't wait to read more books of Marzi.
