Legends of Marithia: Darkness Rising is my sequel to my debut novel, Prophecies Awakening

Although I have written Book 2 in the series to be able to be read in its own right... It will be far more enjoyable if you have read the first book. Legends of Marithia 1 (Prophecies Awakening) was an adrenaline rush journey of events, that set the stage for the entire series.

Darkness Rising is the sequel to Peter Koevari's Prophecies Awakening, his first novel in the series, Legends of Marithia. I received a free e-book in exchange for a review.

First, I liked how the story is still fast-paced, like his first novel. It's straight to the point. It will shock you, hook you, it will allow you to think about the characters' feeling and attitudes, right in that moment as you read each line, every chapter of it. It does not go round circles.

This is book two in a series of epic fantasy novels, incorporating some of the best fantasy elements of humans, elves, dragons and other mythical and mystical beings. Fortunately, one doesn’t have to read book one of the series in order to understand and enjoy book two, but I do think it would likely help. I picked this up for review and haven’t read book one yet, but I do feel I’m missing a little bit by not knowing all the characters and back story well. That said, the first chapters are a bit tough to follow in that it bounces around a little in time. In one chapter, we’re told a character died, then in the next chapter, we go back a little in time and see how that character died, without any indication that we’ve shifted gears except for a chapter change. Each chapter tells the story of one of the characters, mostly in an omniscient point of view, but focusing on that particular character, so it does work, even if it’s a tad awkward in the beginning.

Plot of Legends of Marithia: Darkness Rising, by Peter Koevari

As with many epic fantasy novels, this one has a prophecy. We begin early in the book to see that the wheels of motion have started spinning on the fulfillment of this prophecy, when a child is born from a mix of a sorceress and a vampire, a mating that is illegal and punishable by death (vampires can peacefully co-exist, but there is a ‘racism’ issue with the people and the vampires in this story). The child has to witness the cruel murder of her parents and she strikes a deal with the ruler of the underworld and thus the prophecy is set in motion.

A caste system with a king and a jealous prince who wants his father’s crown exists in this universe, and a rival in love with the princess is cast to bring about conclusion of the prophecy. This results in the prince seeking to destroy him before he can succumb to or fulfill his fate. The once peaceful Marithia erupts in war.

The castle lies in runs. The knight from the prophecy is in cahoots with and spellbound by the dragons (and I have to say, I loved the dragons in this book!), and Shindar, the demon of the underworld, has been waiting for centuries to exact his revenge (which is another good story I would have liked to read more about so I’m hoping it’s in part one of this series!)

I won’t say anything more about the plot, as to not give away any spoilers, but basically, the rest goes about seeing how the prophecy plays out and trying to set right what once went wrong.

There are minor grammatical errors throughout, mostly missing commas and minor copy editing issues. For an indie published (self-published) book, the writing and editing were better than most I’ve read, and the minor errors I came across didn’t jolt me out of the enjoyment of the book.

Overall Opinion of Legends of Marithia: Darkness Rising, by Peter Koevari

Overall, I very much enjoyed this book. I like a good fantasy novel now and then, and this one kept my interest. I found I want to get to know the characters better and it was easy enough to slip into the universe and live in it while reading. The pacing is good, keeping my interest. The writing is good, though it has a little room for improvement, as does the editing. Overall, it’s a quality read and one I would recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy.

There is a lot going on in this book, so you do have to keep up with it, but if you like dragons, elves, unicorns, gods and goddesses, demons, and magic, this book has some good elements of all those things. It’s entertaining and long enough to be worth the money for that entertainment.

Enjoyed this read immensely!

Peter did receive some feedback regarding character depth in book 1. Book 2 eats this feedback for breakfast. It's as though book 1 was a 'teaser'... a fast paced fantasy thriller to get you hooked. Book 2 goes on to explain many beginnings for many characters. Not to give anything away, but we now know why Shindar is Shindar (and I don't really blame him)!

A great continuation of the story begun in Prophecies Awakening, Darkness Rising is book two of the Legends of Marithia series. I actually enjoyed Darkness more than Prophecies, because the story seemed to flow a bit more coherently. It is clear that Mr. Koevari took into account the feedback from the first book and used it to his advantage in crafting a much more put-together story.

Dark Rising is the second book in the Legends of Marithia Series. In this book, more background was given on the characters own personal stories. These back stories of the characters were not given in the first book. Though, in the case of Vartan, I understand why his backstory of becoming a knight was not told until the beginning of book two. These back stories that were given gave the characters more of a real feeling to them, because you got to understand the characters more and understand the choices they make throughout the story based upon things that occurred in the past.
Besides the growth of the characters from the first book and a better understanding of who they are, some new characters were introduced in this book which I totally fell in love with. AnaKari was probably my favorite character in this series. She comes with a mystery that really makes you want to know more and as the book goes on, you learn more about her, you find yourself with more questions and dying to know more of her origins just as she wonders about them herself. You are really following her along on her own journey of self-discovery and I loved that about this character that you are learning about her just as she is learning about herself.
Along with the growth of characters and the introduction of others, a different side of Kassina is shown. In my review of the first book, I said, Kassina is really hard to feel sympathy for; based on what I read in that book I still agree with that statement. Though based on this book she isn't seen as such a blood thirsty murderous character she is shown more in the light of an innocent child who was hurt and led astray by another person who was hurt and seeking revenge.
I found that in the first book you leave with a sense of what side is right and wrong. This book makes you question which side is truly good and which side is truly evil. I found myself leaving this book with the ideas of good and evil is a matter of perspective. When you have the full story from both sides, the idea of one being right and one being wrong is based on perspective. There is a lot of gray areas and not to take things as face value. The first book lays out the one thing giving you one perspective while I found the second to make you question what was learned from the first book told you.

This book is as enjoyable, if not more so, than the first book in the series, "Prophecies Awakening." The blood magic used throughout the book by these characters is quite appropriate, both because of the presence of vampires and because blood magic is potent and associated with black magic.

I did notice several grammatical mistakes throughout the story (mostly in the form of comma splices, although I spotted a few misplaced modifiers and weirdly formatted apostrophes as well), but this did not overly detract from my enjoyment of the book. I also missed the gorgeous artwork that came with the ebook of the first novel (although my eyes were spoiled because most books usually only have cover art).

In my previous review, I stated that the prophecies seemed obvious and cheesy. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this was not the case. (view spoiler)

Ankari is an interesting character. Her naivety is well-done, as are her interactions with Yuski. She reminds me of a Snow White/Sleeping Beauty figure when she is about to play her role. (view spoiler)

Tusdar's story interested me most, moreso than Vartan's (although the magic that he acquires has beautiful description), and I hope that his conflict becomes more present in the next instalment. (view spoiler)

I look forward to seeing how the storylines intertwine and interact, particularly Tusdar's mingling with Vartan's.

While readers probably won't like the villians of Darkness Rising, Peter Koevari has done what is rarely done, he has given life to even the villians of the story. By doing this readers will get to learn more about characters from both sides of the war and allow readers to develop feelings for the villians as well as the heros. This is a rare find when a story develops the bad guys as well as the good guys, as most authors cannot pull it off. Peter Koevari doing this was especially nice because some characters walk the line between being good and evil. Darkness Rising book 2 of Legends of Marithia does have one section containing "adult content". Though the sceen is detailed, in no way is this sceen rude, crude, cheap or volgar. Peter Koevari once again has done what most authors seem to strugle to accomplish, gives the sceen class and is able to portray to readers the feelings of intimacey that is being shared between the characters. Peter Koevari reached for the stars when he wrote Prophecies Awakening book 1 of Legends of Marithia and with Darkness Rising book 2 of Legends of Marithia Peter Koevari proves he is already well beyond their reach. Peter Koevari does a fantastic job of world building in this novel. That is what initially brought me to this series-the concept of having a high fantasy with all your classic characters but then vampires were added to the mix. It definitely gives fantasy a new twist.
I really liked this idea but I noticed I had a hard time getting into the second novel. There were parts that seemed to drag on and on without really getting to the point. This was in the beginning but towards the middle and definitely the end, I found myself going, "Oh my goodness, didn't see that coming!"
Vartan is a strong male lead who is noble and always thinking of his country, his people, and his freedom. It is filling watching Vartan make the choices he makes and the way he puts himself in the path of danger to save one person. It was also crushing to see his reaction to Tusdar.
Speaking of Tusdar...wow! He has been crucial to the story; much more than I thought he would. I really liked him in the first book and so it is nice to see him still around in the second book. I can't really talk about him that much because I don't want to give anything away, but he is in love just as much as Vartan is with his love.
In fact, we get to see the concept of love from both sides: good and evil. It is a nice touch to a story that likes to blur the lines between good and evil. I feel like there is a lot of the gray area in this story.
We also meet some new characters in the story and we finally get a small but explosive peek into what the gods really are doing.
I still find myself confused by the whole concept of the Talonsphere. I understand what it will do, who needs to activate it (and who doesn't), and the reason it was made; but I guess I am just anxious for it to be brought to the front.
Nevertheless, there are so many surprising twists in the story you will literally be shaking your head, never seeing it coming.
Darkness Rising is a high fantasy story that takes many different elements into consideration to take us on an imaginative journey through a land that is on the brink of falling apart without its hero finding his true potential.
I give it four hearts.

The dialogue is a bit stilted. There are instances where the characters talk too much, in a manner not consistent with dialogue from real people. It felt as though sometimes the author was trying to tell the story through the dialogue, instead of just letting the characters talk to each other.

I like the writing style. It's super fast-paced. I found that, unlike a lot of books I've been reading recently, I didn't feel a desire to skim and skip ahead to get to some action. Unfortunately, because it was mostly expositional (a lot of telling and not enough showing), I didn't get as deeply involved in the story as I would have liked. The author tells us a lot of things, but I would have preferred him to show it to us as it played out.

For an indie published (self-published) book, the writing and editing were better than most I've read, and the minor errors I came across didn't jolt me out of the enjoyment of the book.

Overall, I very much enjoyed this book. I like a good fantasy novel now and then, and this one kept my interest. I found I want to get to know the characters better and it was easy enough to slip into the universe and live in it while reading. The pacing is good, keeping my interest. The writing is good, though it has a little room for improvement, as does the editing. Overall, it's a quality read and one I would recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy.

The battles continues as Kassina is brought back to life with Shindar's help, Vartan is stuck in the darkness of Kassina's evil spell and hears Talonsphere calling. Humans. Elfen, and dragons unite to take Greenhaven back, while new characters are introduced, some to aid and some to fight against with the evil sorceress vowing to avenge her defeat!

This book is the second in the series and picks up right where the first book left off. The book introduces us to a few new characters and intertwines them with the fates of the original characters. We learn more about the original characters in this book, as some secrets that were kept from them are now revealed.

This is another book that will keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next. There are interesting twists and turns and things you didn't see coming which will make you want...more

If it's possible... I like Darkness Rising even better than book 1. Shindars' story is revealed and you see what made him become evil. The plot is building to the ultimate battle. The mystery surrounding Kari was intriguing. The twist revealed at the end about Kassina was not expected. As with the first book, i was unable to put it down. I leaves me begging to know what will happen next.
Absolutely excellent fantasy series. Hurry up with the 3rd book Peter! :-)

Fantastic read! Usually sequels fail to live up to its predecessor, however Koevari was once again able to impress me with his use of detailed visuals and a phenomenal final action scene. Unlike the first book, Darkness Rising includes a lot of downtime between battles, which allows the reader to develop a close relationship with the characters, and connect with them on a personal level.

Definitely recommend this to any Fantasy lover.

Characters were more solidified which is characteristic in a series of books. Peter followed through with previous characters from Book 1 and tied up any loose connections. More suspense is created in 'Darkness Rising' and excellent foreshadowing kept the readers engaged throughout.

Book 2 in the Legends of Marithia series is every bit as good as Book 1. I actually enjoyed this portion of the story even more, thanks to the additional details about the characters and events prior to the start of Book 1. The picture becomes more complete for the reader, however you can certainly still enjoy each book as a stand alone novel.
