Benson Yee is Chinese, gay, not out to his parents, and sick to death of the Christmas hype. When Benson is asked to plan a dinner for the Jewish Community Center, he meets Josh Singer, who, just like Benson, has no interest in Christmas or in finding a nice girl. Between the two of them, they might find the courage to celebrate the gift of being themselves with the people ...more

As with a lot of shorts, this story suffered from being to short to get the whole story out.
It was nice, but felt more like an outline, because I really couldn't see why Ben fell so hard and quickly for Josh and vice-versa.

The focus of this thoughtful story is the two different cultures of the main characters, each in their own way set against what Benson and Josh know is right for them. But it is more than the cultural background they have to contend with: it is their parents’ expectations, rooted in tradition, as well. As can be expected in such a short story, nothing is really solved, but there is a glimmer of hope by the end; a glimmer they will have to work out how to transform into a ray of light for themsel ...more

There are probably several ways of dealing with Chinglish in a novel. This is probably not one of them:

“Ah, Benson. Ni dzo mut yeah, lan dzoi?” Benson turned toward the front door when he heard a voice speak to him in Cantonese.

I winced when I read that. There's already the romanization. It might be a personal preference, but I always thought that the reader should be able to see things from the POV of the narrator in limited third person and this is just... awkward. Plus, Ms. Hawkins decides t

I think this story encapsulates what I loved about living in the Bay area. That two people from such different backgrounds find each other and fall in love is what it's all about. Very nice story of a young Chinese man and the young Jewish man who meet because of an injury to one's mother. Turns out they have more in common that Sylvia!

Light, romantic, small bit of conflict, but a nice possible HEA.

This one fell short for me. Struggled to get through it as I was not a fan of the preachy religion aspect and felt like we were told everything.
