Men Under the Mistletoe is an awesome collection of very hot, very heartwarming stories penned by some of the most talented writers of the male/male genre out there. These authors; Ava March, Harper Fox, Josh Lanyon, and K. A. Mitchell, have struck the perfect balance between sweet and edgy, making all of these stories so perfectly sexy, that they could be considered erotica if they weren’t also so romantic, too.

I don’t normally like regency romances, but My True Love Gave to Me is pretty good. A lot better than I expected. The characters drive the story. Thomas left Sasha when they were both 17 because his desires scared him. The second part of the story is pretty damn emotional. I liked it a lot. The characters are special. They can’t exactly be open about their relationship, but they get a HEA anyway. And the way they do the HEA isn’t too unrealistic!

I enjoyed all four stories in this anthology, but the one that's really stayed with me is Harper Fox's Winter Knights (~35,000 words). The protagonist, Gavin Lowden, is flawed but sympathetic, and his Christmas Eve adventures are harrowing, sexy, and haunting by turns. Winter Knights engaged my mind, my imagination, and my heart, and I'm pretty sure it's going to be a regular holiday re-read.

'Men Under the Mistletoe' is one of the best holiday anthologies I've ever read. A Christmas story, by any of these authors, would be great, but a book with their talents combined creates real holiday magic. Although it's an eclectic collection, I found each story quite moving as I followed the characters through their trials and tribulations, all hoping for a second chance at love.

This is a general review for the entire collection of short stories. I will (probably) review the individual stories later because each one deserves more than a measly paragraph of appreciation from me.

I spent one whole week savoring the stories in this anthology because I didn't want to run out of good stories too fast. This collection has all of my favorite m/m authors so I absolutely refused to read it in a rush. I spent one whole week savoring the stories in this anthology because I didn't want to run out of good stories too fast. This collection has all of my favorite m/m authors so I absolutely refused to read it in a rush. Besides, after weeks of anticipation, I just didn't think it was appropriate to gobble up the contents in one go. The holiday season is a long one, after all.

Comparing this volume of holiday stories from the first one released last year by Carina Press, His For The Holidays, I have to say that this second collection has more depth overall and feels a lot more intense. I enjoyed His For The Holidays for its smile-inducing, heartwarming stories. But now that I've read the Men Under The Mistletoe, though, I couldn't help but notice just how lighthearted and fun the first anthology was. This second one, on the other hand, could drive one to feel somewhat depressed - which is not a good feeling to be having on a season that's supposed to be all about joy and miracles and whatnot.

The theme this time is, of course, "he who got away and is subsequently, eventually recaptured". All four stories had that one guy who didn't stick around the first time, leaving the other pining, and then rekindling their old flame. Thankfully, all the stories ended on a positive note - happy endings all over from these four excellent authors and with just enough balance between spicy, sweet and sexy. But they do put you - and the characters - through your paces to get to the happy ending part. If one is not familiar with the "conflict management" of these four authors, then one may feel very frustrated somewhere along the way. I would've felt that way, too, except that I find myself being entertained instead of annoyed by these stories. While this could be blamed on myself personally - I guess I was just in the mood for angst - but they really are gut-wrenching stories with flawed people who seemed like idiots at first.

But because of that, I think, the stories in this anthology leaves a more lasting impression on me compared to its predecessor. I find myself re-reading each of the story I finished the day before since I first began reading. They rather stuck on you after you finished - they're the kind of stories that would make you feel and think for a couple of days, at least, after your first time reading.

So, really, kudos for the editor of this anthology for picking out the amazing talents that we have in the m/m genre. And certainly props to Ava March, Harper Fox, Josh Lanyon and KA Mitchell for never dropping their standard despite the frivolities of this festive season. To say that I'm entertained would be an understatement. Thrilled, excited, jubilant and impressed would be closer to the truth. Then I have to wonder: how in the world will Carina Press top this one next year?(less)

This is the first m/m book I’ve reviewed for the blog, and I really enjoyed the novellas. I requested the book for review because I am a huge fan of Josh Lanyon’s writing, but the other authors were all new to me. There is considerable variety of genres and styles found in this collection of Christmas-themed stories, and sadly, there is a range in quality too.

Ava March's historical romance My True Love Gave to Me. takes you on an angst-filled ride as two young men learn to love each other despite convention, yet are heartbroken as convention interferes with their plans. It is a story of learning the value of love and forgiveness, where courage is needed to both face pain and their past. A solid story - 4 stars

Josh Lanyon isn't capable of writing a truly bad story, but I found Lone Star to be not one of this author's better stories. This story seemed a little predictable, despite the hint of paranormal elements, and for me, the characters didn't have the depth that I have come to expect from Lanyon. The easing of past pain and forgiveness seem to happen rather suddenly, and the pacing seemed a bit off overall. As I said, it is not a bad story, but certainly not one of Lanyon's brightest efforts. 3 - 3.5 stars

The Christmas Proposition by K.A. Mitchell probably appealed the least to me out of the four stories, yet I can't exactly say why. This story certainly has the highest heat rating of the four, but rather than love, I felt more lust than anything else from the main characters, as their emotions felt hidden for a good part of the story. By hiding the characters emotions, I think Mitchell was trying to emphasize the uncertainty both characters felt about their relationship. This would probably work quite well in a story of greater length, but it just left me feeling less than involved in the story. 2.5 - 3 stars.

I liked this book.A lot. The one good thing about a compilation is that typically if you have one story you aren't too fond of, the next one will more than likely be more to your liking. This is true for this book.

Pathetic, but flattering. (I hope.) LOL Anyway... I had already purchased her novella-- "My True Love Gave to Me"-- prior to noticing that it was also included in this compilation. However, I had no problem reading/listening to it again. And, as I listened, I even noticed 'new' things, and feel deeper into love with the characters. I felt the anger. the pain. the fear. the remorse. the need. the desire... so I was not disappointed. I think I loved this story because I know what its like to not do what your heart wants to do, for fear of how others might see you. Unlike Thomas, I didn't correct my mistake. So, I live the emotion through him.

The second story wasn't too marvelous. Winter's Heart by Harper Fox. He's lucky that his name is cool. Anyway... I really had to try and not skim ( I did, but let's pretend I didn't...) and find SOME SCENE or emotional expression that allowed me to feel a connection to the main characters. I just can't get into too much self- reflection. This is not a journal, Fox!! Where is your editor? Perhaps Fox's style is too poetic? Too long-winded? Or perhaps he's so involved with the English language that he feels the need to bore us readers with the pains that a writer goes through when trying to formulate a story or attempting to finish a thesis. I, for one, was NOT impressed. But I loved the sentiment of the story. All too often we don't realize what we're doing wrong in a relationship. Often times, our past hurts prevent us from truly forming a future with our partner. I loved that Gavin FINALLY came to terms with his love for Piers and consummated said love. I have to tell you, the whole Catholicism thing dragged on a bit, thank god anal beads and lube were worked somewhere into the story :P

I loved the 3rd story. Lone Star by Josh Landon. Half way through the story, I started searching Amazon.com for more from this author. Marvelous. Enter Mitchell, sensational ballet star, and Texas Ranger, Webb. They were each other's first love, but when Webb was too afraid to come out, Mitchell high-tailed it out of town and it wasn't until 12 years later that he returns. Ain't nothing sexier than the twang of a cowboy!!! Honestly. Webb truly turned me on. I know he's a character, but I felt him. And Mitchell was lucky he got to him before I did. LOL Anyway, it's all about growing up. Reflecting on one's past and the mistakes made as a result of fear, immaturity and impulse. I loved this story..... well, except for the description of Mitchell's toes. Seriously? That is something NO ONE needs to imagine. I'm still creeped out. Gah!

The 4th and finally story was so hot. I literally kept squirming in my seat at work. (I was listening to the book on CD.) It was totally NSFW. LOL Its called "The Christmas Proposition" by K.A. Mitchell. Wowsers. You know that expression... "f-ing like rabbits!" Well the lovers in this novel couldn't keep their hands off one another. Mel is one of the oldest in the family and he's felt a need to keep the family together by working the family tree farm. He's letting his life pass him by and his lover Bryce wants him to choose the path with him. Of course Mel can't get his stuff together, and loses Bryce. But, can he get it together to get Bryce back? It was a good story... mostly for the yummy sex scenes. *fans self*

So, enjoy this compilation... some parts more than others :X(less)

Okay Regency romance. I tend to like regency and I think it has great potential as a setting for m/m, it being a hanging offense back then and all, but I have not often seen it done well. The problem I had with this story is that Alexander's change of heart came about really abrupt and the story ended abrupt too.

Although all the lovers are male, in many ways this is a typical Christmas romance anthology: it features a Regency, a ghost story, a Western, and a humorous first-person contemporary, and though the sex scenes are explicit, the emphasis is mostly on the romance. I was a little dismayed when I realized that every story in this anthology involves protagonists who have prior history with each other. I tend to prefer stories in which the protagonists meet for the first time and develop their relationship from there. Lone Star- Liked it a lot. Three of the four stories in this anthology are lovers reuniting stories. These are always bittersweet for me, because I always wish they hadn't wasted all that time apart. (Usually over stupid misunderstandings.) This is the only one of the three that had a really good reason for them to separate. Quite easily the best anthology I've read. I'd happy revisit each of these pairings again. And I'm sure I will...I might not even wait until next Christmas.
