On the night of her betrothal, seventeen year old Lydia Trent is given just a small taste of the carnal bliss her fiancé, Marcus, Lord Russell, has to offer. But six years later, having not set eyes on him since that most wickedly exciting night of her life, Lydia is done waiting for him to return and sends a message requesting his permission to break their promise to marry.

Marcus is stunned by Lydia's request to be released from their betrothal, and isn’t about to give her what she asks. Reali...more

WOW! What an unexpected surprise A Breach of Promise turned out to be. I was captivated, riveted, and charmed by this superbly written short story.I'm in awe of Ms. Vane's ability to write a novella that is not only historically detailed, engaging, and cleverlycontrived, but simultaneously sweeps the reader into a world full of richly developed characters, and terrific, witty dialogue.

The cast of characters in this short story were simply amazing for a Novella.I can honestly say, I don...more

Lydia Albinia Trent at seventeen is on the cusp of womanhood. Her engagement to Marcus, Lord Russell formalizes the arrangement made between their mothers when they were children. The betrothal suits Marcus well enough as it will enable him to progress with his political and diplomatic aspirations, at the same time freeing him from any tiresome match-making endeavors. And besides, Lydia is perfect - pretty, dowered and malleable.

Six years later Lydia, tired of waiting for Marcus to retu...more

AUTHOR COMMENTARY by Victoria Vane

As an author of several sub-genres of historical fiction it is my belief that to truly understand a given era one must study the popular culture of the times, and nowhere is the mindset of the people more clearly demonstrated than on the stage. It was while reading Hannah Cowley’s The Belle’s Strategem, one of the most popular of late Georgian era plays, that I was inspired to write A BREACH OF PROMISE.

While The Belle’s Stratagem juxtaposes two different story...more

A Breach of Promise by Victoria Vane

Erotica isn’t my normal cup of tea; but if this novella is a sign of things to come I will be reading more of it. I am learning things from some of the authors I have interviewed, one of those being Emery Lee who also writes as Victoria Vane. We have talked and shared quite a bit since I interviewed her. So please read this review in that spirit. I was acknowledged in this book and that is kindness itself, because I just think she has real talent and told her...more

Great short read, with witty dialogue and loveable hero and heroine, that put a real smile on my face.

Looking forward to reading more from Victoria Vane.

I've never been a fan of short stories because there is never enough depth to satisfy the reader in me, so I should have known that this book was no different. I gave it a shot anyway and it fell short like all the rest. Not to mention that I did not like the hero. He came off as a very shallow cookie cutter character. He didn't even try to get to know the heroine in the past or give her the time or day just because she wasn't good looking at the time, but the second he saw that she turned into...more

"A Breach of Promise" by Victoria Lane was just another excellent historical romance novellas that only Ms. Vane can give to her readers. Please note: This is a Adult read ...so beware! We find in this read that Lydia Trent has been promised to Lord Marcus Russell at a real early age due to the fact that the mother are best friends. Now the story takes off ...and we are to find out? What is that old saying? 'If you play with fire, you’re bound to get burned.'

That is the lesson learned by our protagonist, Marcus. Reluctant to enter into a betrothal with Lydia, who is just turning seventeen, he does what is required by family obligation. His father and uncle, the Duke of Bedford, set up the match with no consultation from Marcus. He would prefer to focus on his own burgeoning political career, and still wants to so...more

It was OK. Lots of historic-y words like "Lud!", "taradiddle", "lackaday", "flummery" and "betwixt" wrapped around a typically thin erotica plot and a tone that read like many standard Regency HRs (even though this was Georgian-set with current historical events wedged into the dialogue). Their lips say "no" but their body parts say "yes", some dirty talk, shocked feelings of wickedness. Slick wet quims and heated cores and twitching cocks. Love, hate, love. Oneupmanship. Witty banter. Fingers a...more

Victoria Vane is the alt pen name of historical romance author Emory Lee. In this book we see the same strengths you can see in Lee's other works. A nice, fairly accurate depiction of the Regency period.

The trope we're presented with in this novella is "neglected betrothed kicks disinterested fiance to the curb and makes him sweat to get he back". As always, it's a fun look at an over-confident male being taught a much-needed lesson by the female he ignored.

What I like most about Vane/Lee's writ...more

Historical Romances are where most readers started when they jumped out of the classics. I have a fondness for this particularly category because it allowed me an escape from this time for many years. But I just love the newer historical romances!! Gone are the quivering and cowering virgins and in waltz the new age girls decked out in old-fashion attire! I would like to imagine that there were many heroic women back then, and Lydia would be an excellent example. She is promised to Lord Russell...more

4 ½ stars – Erotic Georgian/Historical Romance Novella

Lydia Trent is a romantic young lady of seventeen looking forward to finally celebrating the announcement of a formal betrothal to the subject of her girlhood infatuation, Marcus, Lord Russell. Although Marcus recognizes his duty to play the biddable fiancé, he’s less than enthusiastic and cynical about being forced into an attachment to a naïve girl barely out of the schoolroom. After getting a bit tipsy and giving Lydia her first glimpse of...more

This is an erotic historical romance. I was told it was slightly "Heyer-esque." I'm not sure what that means, but I thought "Georgette Heyer," the famous author of books in the Georgian era. I hate Heyer, so it was with much trepidation that I picked this up.

It's cute, witty, and the sex is very erotic. I also learned a lot of new words, thus it was somewhat like Heyer. However, the real and very dead Heyer used as many complicated and head scratching words as possible in one sentence. Vane jus...more

This was a truly sweet, tantalizing, romantic, hilarious and sexy read. It left me wanting for more and dissatisfied for good reasons.

I totally loved Lydia's strength of character. She was an intelligent and delightful heroine.

While Marcus was a full of himself pompous prat and rake, you just couldn't help loving him. He was a good rake.

I also enjoyed reading about Nicholas and Mariah. Their dishevelled appearances towards the end hinted at something much more. It would be lovely if Miss Vane d...more

Dear kiddies…I mean authors…lesson number one!
SEX IS NOT LOVE!
LUST IS NOT LOVE!
OBSESSION IS NOT LOVE!

Did my capitol letters get trough to you?
Sadly, I doubt it.

More and more am I coming across plots where the hero and heroine feel obsession and lust at best.
The characters in this story were the prototype for a future failed relationship. The only thing keeping them together is a love for politics and fucking (excuse me for being un-lady-like here).

The epilogue that took place one year later was...more

A Breach of Promise is a romance reader's tasty treat with charismatic characters and a sensual seduction wrapped up in a Georgian romance novella. Lady Lydia is tired of waiting around for her betrothed, Lord Marcus, to finally marry her. In her frustration, she calls off the engagement, to the surprise of Lord Marcus. Marcus realizes that he must fix the situation and woo Lydia back. When he meets Lydia again, he realizes that the young girl he knew is now a woman. A woman he hurt who is deter...more

I like this writer. I wanted to like this novella, and I did, mostly. However there are somme "aaargh" moments which really annoyed me.

Bear in mind that the action takes place in 1748.

Champagne, whiskey (sic) and chocolate.

Champagne was not popular in England at that time. In view of the fact that the wire cage over the cork hadn't been developed, I can't think that it would have travelled well. It became popular in the mid 19th century.

Chocolate, of the sort that might melt, also was not invent...more

i was very eager when my friend suggested this story to me. but good lord i wasted money on this story. the hero is a total jerk.after their engagement hero just takes off and have sex with different whores it seems and she is waiting dutifully for her betrothed. then after six years after her fathers death she decides to break off the contract. they both have a strong physical attraction. but Jesus, for all her talk, miss trint is a blind fool who just falls in his feat for a simple kiss. that...more

One of my very favourite HR storylines is that of the long-gone fiance. You know, the one who is betrothed to the heroine while she is little more than a child, and comes back years later to discover how much she's grown up in his absence.

I REALLY liked this book. I was predisposed to like the story, but the writing was what clinched it for me. The detail, the clothing, the descriptions, the dialogue. Oh, the dialogue! It is simply WONDERFUL. The expressions used by the characters, their turns o...more

A great sensual (erotic) historical read (and now my favorite) that had me loving the spunk of the lovely, innocent Lydia from start to finish. There is nothing like a woman that can put a man in his place without even trying!

Now Marcus (sigh), is another story. I just did not like him. He was all about dollar signs, reputation and getting places with no regard of poor Lydia or her feelings. He (to me) was a cold, cruel, pompous arse! Luckily things change and people mature or else Lydia would...more

This was a VERY good read for me. Victoria does erotic historical romances just the way I want them to be. My only complaint is that I WISH it was longer. Even though it is a short read Victoria Vane still manages to give us a very good story with great characters and enough heat to have most readers squirming in their seats.

I recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast, steamy well...more

OMG What a fun story! Hot! Historical! Amazing!! I think my favorite part about the story is the banter between the hero and heroine. You know they're meant to be from the start, so well-matched are they for each other. Now, if they could just get past their differences... ;)

Wonderful read for anyone who is looking for some heat between the sheets with the added backdrop of history. Lydia is just a DOLL and Marcus is a fool for even thinking of letting her go! I loved both of them from the start...more

When I started "A Breach of Promise", I wasn't aware that it is a short story - that may be the reason I cannot give it more than one star. Although this genre normally contains a lot of steamy scenes, it was unfortunate that more than half of the book focused on it. There was simply insufficient time to develop any of the characters, or any semblance of a plot.

The characters were absolutely unlikable. The "hero" Marcus gave off a very cocky, arrogant, shallow, and self-important vibe that never...more
