With rich depictions of life, dress, and beautiful period prose, Victoria Vane swept me away to the heart of Georgian era England where I devoured every word, every sigh, every sinfully delicious moment. And even though this story has it all, I was left wanting for more!

The bottom line – To say I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this story is to say the least. It’s not often an author can deliver everything Ms. Vane did – and do it well – in a novella. If you enjoy historical romance with a lot of heat but not a lot of kink, I know you’ll love A Breach of Promise. It’s one of the best historical erotic romances I’ve read and I am truly hoping for more by this author!!

For those interested, this book contains scrumptiously detailed sex - oral, vaginal and anal play involving a very determined thumb – and is definitely erotic, but not vulgar.

WOW! What an unexpected surprise A Breach of Promise turned out to be. I was captivated, riveted, and charmed by this superbly written short story.I'm in awe of Ms. Vane's ability to write a novella that is not only historically detailed, engaging, and cleverlycontrived,but simultaneously sweeps the reader into a world full of richly developed characters, and terrific, witty dialogue.

As an author of several sub-genres of historical fiction it is my belief that to truly understand a given era one must study the popular culture of the times, and nowhere is the mindset of the people more clearly demonstrated than on the stage. It was while reading Hannah Cowley’s The Belle’s Strategem, one of the most popular of late Georgian era plays, that I was inspired to write A BREACH OF PROMISE.

While The Belle’s Stratagem juxtaposes two different story lines, the essential theme concerns men learning to respect the women in their lives both before and after marriage. This theme of respect is closely mirrored in my erotic historical novella, A BREACH OF PROMISE.

Like Cowley’s play, the premise of my story is an engagement contracted by the hero and heroine’s parents when they were very young. Also similar is that my own hero, Marcus, like Cowley’s Doricourt, has been many years travelling abroad and has recently returned to England a handsome, fashionable, and much sought after bachelor, but one who has learned to appreciate continental beauty and manners far above those of his own countrywomen.

Cowley’s Leticia is smitten by her erstwhile finance but dismayed by his apparent indifference to her charms and vows to “win his heart or never be his wife.” The unusual stratagem employed to win him over is based on the belief that it is “easier to convert a sentiment into its opposite than to transform indifference into tender passion.” These circumstance and sentiments closely match those of my own heroine, Lydia Trent in A BREACH OF PROMISE.

Determined to rebuff the arrogant and conceited Marcus at every turn, Lydia wages a battle royale only to discover she is defenseless against his counter-strategy of seduction.

With scorching sensuality combined with a "Heyer-esque" humor, witty dialogue and colorful characters, I promise a fun and engaging read!

I've never been a fan of short stories because there is never enough depth to satisfy the reader in me, so I should have known that this book was no different. I gave it a shot anyway and it fell short like all the rest. Not to mention that I did not like the hero. He came off as a very shallow cookie cutter character. That is the lesson learned by our protagonist, Marcus. Reluctant to enter into a betrothal with Lydia, who is just turning seventeen, he does what is required by family obligation. His father and uncle, the Duke of Bedford, set up the match with no consultation from Marcus. He would prefer to focus on his own burgeoning political career, and still wants to sow his wild oats. Who wants to get married when you're young and having fun?

And what’s the best way to put off your betrothed? Well, showing up to the engagement slash birthday party drunk of course. The young couple leave the party for a moment and Marcus’ true feelings about their engagement are revealed, of course crushing poor Lydia’s heart and dreams. But between trying to prove that she is not a child and his drunkenness, things get a little hot and heavy in the garden.

What Marcus didn’t know was that evening he started a low burn within Lydia. A burn he let simmer for six years! Now as a woman of twenty three and still not married, Lydia has had enough and asks to be released from the engagement with Marcus. While he was off playing political diplomat, Lydia was a home waiting and wanting until she grew into a sharp, educated woman. She has plans and dreams, and Lydia has had enough of Marcus’ blantant brush off to getting married. Can’t say I blame her, who makes a woman wait six years during that time period?

Of course Marcus’ pride is wounded by Lydia’s request and thus begins a witty and emotional game of chess between the two. Deciding to bite the bullet and finally concede to marrying Lydia, Marcus is shocked when he finds a beautiful and not only well rounded, but quick witted woman. And Lydia is shocked when she realizes that even though her mind is totally off marrying Marcus, her body is all full steam ahead to the idea. And so begins the cat and mouse game of should they or shouldn't they get married.

I loved this book. So much so I have read it twice. Victoria Vane wrote a wickedly funny, sexy and witty tale about lust and love set in the Georgian Era as opposed to the typical Regency/Victorian you find in most historical romance. My favorite quote from the book is made by Marcus as he’s trying to convince Lydia that marrying him is in her best interest: “Our children.” He expounded in his most seductive tone. “The fruit of our loins that would be nothing less than heaven in the making.” My other favorite part of the story is the last few pages when Ms. Vane makes it clear that parents often do know "what's best".

I loved both characters immensely, both of their inner monologues had me giggling and yet the sex scene had me fanning myself. This is pretty raunchy for the time period, but in a good way and Ms. Vane does it in a very forward thinking way. Just overall an awesome read and top of my recommend list.

Lots of historic-y words like "Lud!", "taradiddle", "lackaday", "flummery" and "betwixt" wrapped around a typically thin erotica plot and a tone that read like many standard Regency HRs (even though this was Georgian-set with current historical events wedged into the dialogue). Victoria Vane is the alt pen name of historical romance author Emory Lee. In this book we see the same strengths you can see in Lee's other works. A nice, fairly accurate depiction of the Regency period.

The trope we're presented with in this novella is "neglected betrothed kicks disinterested fiance to the curb and makes him sweat to get he back". As always, it's a fun look at an over-confident male being taught a much-needed lesson by the female he ignored.

Historical Romances are where most readers started when they jumped out of the classics. I have a fondness for this particularly category because it allowed me an escape from this time for many years. But I just love the newer historical romances!! Gone are the quivering and cowering virgins and in waltz the new age girls decked out in old-fashion attire! She is promised to Lord Russell at an early age, since the mothers of the two in question were as close as sisters. A union between the houses was a much anticipated event. Lydia was also extremely excited by her good fortune because Marcus was very handsome and charming. The night their engagement was to be officially announced, Marcus arrives horribly late and Lydia is completely crushed. Marcus offers to take Lydia for a stroll in the gardens, which turns into a wickedly yummy scenario unfolding on a swing. But after that fateful night that leaves Lydia on cloud nine and dreaming of him every night, he never comes to call. Six long years have passed and Lydia has finally had enough. She puts pen to paper to inform her reluctant groom that she wishes to break off the engagement. But will she wiggle out of this so easily?

Marcus had been busy trying to secure a name for himself . True, he had no wish to marry, but he did not object to the thought of marrying Lydia. He had good intentions in the beginning, that soon rose into being unable to face her because of guilt. Six years was a bit long but he had every intentions of keeping his promise and marrying her, eventually. So when the letter arrived while he was in town about her wish to break off the engagement, Marcus was shocked. What happened to his meek little wallflower? Determined to charm his way back into her good graces, he sends for her. But this dashing rogue has no idea that he is about to meet his match!!

Lydia is all grown up and has blossomed into a beautiful woman, so much so that Marcus doesn't recognize her. His flowery words and apologetic excuses fall on deaf ears and much to his shock are rebutted and thrown back at him. Lydia is no simpering female to fall to the floor because of his beautiful smile!! So the battle begins between these two very-like minded and intelligent characters. Marcus's mom, hands down, is my favorite character. She is the master manipulator throughout this story! But the interactions between the characters are completely entertaining! And the sex scenes? Completely red hot! I love my books with some spice, and this little historical romance is actually hot! This book was very detailed and flowed quite beautifully from start to finish. Mrs. Vane, you have captured my attention and I look forward to reading more of your books!! I have been entirely seduced by your Breach of Promise!!

Lydia Trent is at first thrilled to find herself engaged to Marcus, Lord Russell, and they share some hot and heavy breathing on the night of their engagement, but then he high tails it off to work overseas. One year becomes two, then three and finally it's been six years and Lady Lydia wants to void the marriage contract, dump her fiancé and move on with life - but Marcus isn't about to let go.

He might have to engage a part of himself he’s never given before...his heart.

I really enjoyed this charming read. It’s sensual and romantic and the storyline, characters, dialogue, and historical details are perfectly crafted for a novella. In terms of heat level, it’s erotic, but tasteful and appropriate for the story. A Breach of Promise is a great historical romance and shows a lot of “promise” for this author whom I’m hoping we’ll see more from. 4 ½ stars!

This is an erotic historical romance. I was told it was slightly "Heyer-esque." I'm not sure what that means, but I thought "Georgette Heyer," the famous author of books in the Georgian era. I hate Heyer, so it was with much trepidation that I picked this up.

It's cute, witty, and the sex is very erotic. I also learned a lot of new words, thus it was somewhat like Heyer. However, the real and very dead Heyer used as many complicated and head scratching words as possible in one sentence. Vane jus...more

This was a truly sweet, tantalizing, romantic, hilarious and sexy read. It left me wanting for more and dissatisfied for good reasons.

I totally loved Lydia's strength of character. She was an intelligent and delightful heroine.

While Marcus was a full of himself pompous prat and rake, you just couldn't help loving him. He was a good rake.

I also enjoyed reading about Nicholas and Mariah. Their dishevelled appearances towards the end hinted at something much more. It would be lovely if Miss Vane d...more

I like this writer. I wanted to like this novella, and I did, mostly. However there are somme "aaargh" moments which really annoyed me.

Bear in mind that the action takes place in 1748.

Champagne, whiskey (sic) and chocolate.

Champagne was not popular in England at that time. In view of the fact that the wire cage over the cork hadn't been developed, I can't think that it would have travelled well. It became popular in the mid 19th century.

I REALLY liked this book. I was predisposed to like the story, but the writing was what clinched it for me. The detail, the clothing, the descriptions, the dialogue. Oh, the dialogue! It is simply WONDERFUL. The expressions used by the characters, their turns of phrase and slightly flowery language evoke the time period beautifully. The Georgian period is my favourite and it has been sadly, sadly neglected with the current glut of Regency romances. You can tell how much knowledge of/research into the period was done here; the author has done an excellent job.

The Hero redeems himself quite nicely (and I must admit that I didn't really like him at the start), and the heroine is likeable and very clever. They have nice chemistry together and the steamy bits are, well, pretty steamy. Ms. Vane has a way with those scenes that was a bit different and quite refreshing, imo.

There were a couple of parts I found a bit clunky right at the beginning, where it looked like the author was setting up her story within the confines of the novella format. Does that make sense? It seemed that a character did one of those speeches where they have to info dump to the reader while talking to someone else (who already knew the info because they were there). Happily, it was only at the beginning. I think if ABoP was a novel the author could have taken the time to show us the history, but because this was a novella she couldn't. The quality of Ms. Vane's writing and the story itself took over shortly after that and I was hooked.

I can't wait to read Ms. Vane's next book, A Wild Night's Bride, which comes out in April. I'm also hoping there's a full-length novel in her future. She's definitely an author to watch.

A great sensual (erotic) historical read (and now my favorite) that had me loving the spunk of the lovely, innocent Lydia from start to finish. There is nothing like a woman that can put a man in his place without even trying!

This was a VERY good read for me. Victoria does erotic historical romances just the way I want them to be. My only complaint is that I WISH it was longer. Even though it is a short read Victoria Vane still manages to give us a very good story with great characters and enough heat to have most readers squirming in their seats.

OMG What a fun story! Hot! Historical! Amazing!! I think my favorite part about the story is the banter between the hero and heroine. You know they're meant to be from the start, so well-matched are they for each other. Now, if they could just get past their differences... ;)

Wonderful read for anyone who is looking for some heat between the sheets with the added backdrop of history. Lydia is just a DOLL and Marcus is a fool for even thinking of letting her go! I loved both of them from the start...more

When I started "A Breach of Promise", I wasn't aware that it is a short story - that may be the reason I cannot give it more than one star. Although this genre normally contains a lot of steamy scenes, it was unfortunate that more than half of the book focused on it. There was simply insufficient time to develop any of the characters, or any semblance of a plot.
