4.5 stars Oooo, smut smut smut smut smut. :D Is it terribly shallow to admit that I snapped up this book because I heard there was hot *whispers* dragon sex in it? I rarely read paranormal romances these days, but all of the reviews I saw for this book were raves, so I was wild with curiosity. Besides, I have a serious weakness for shapeshifters, which has sometimes led to disastrous reads and sometimes led to really fun ones. Besides, I have a serious weakness for shapeshifters, which has sometimes led to disastrous reads and sometimes led to really fun ones. I'm happy to report that in this case, the book more than lives up to the hype.

The story is actually really good, and so well-plotted that in some ways, I'd say this is a lot closer to urban fantasy than your typical PNR; there's as much focus on the story as there is on the relationship. Pia, the central character, is very strong and principled. When we first meet her, she's just been coerced into stealing from a powerful dragon lord. Being a clever woman, she's stolen only a single penny, and she even left a note of apology in its place. Dragos doesn't care, however, and comes after her with all the force of his formidable powers and bristling with outrage and fury. Things begin to get interesting when they realize that Pia's coercion is actually part of a bigger political game between the Fae and the Elder Races...and when they discover their unwilling attraction to one another.

And boy oh boy, is this relationship HOT. Dragos is a very, um, masculine guy and he's overwhelmingly attracted to Pia. The rumors of crazy dragon sex in this book were not exaggerated, but what I also love is that the relationship between them is portrayed with a great deal of respect and tenderness. They're strong as individuals, but they're so great together that you really want them to overcome all their obstacles and get their happily ever after. The secondary characters are also great, and the set-up for the next book Storm's Heart is skillfully woven into the plot.

Aside from a small bit of info-dumping in the beginning, this is an exceptionally well-written novel for the genre, and filled with humorous situations and hilarious one-liners. Several of my friends have pulled this out as a favorite quote, and I have to share it as well, because it just makes me giggle:

“So is that your long, scaly reptilian tail or are you just happy to see me?”

Tee hee hee. How can you not laugh? This is a book that isn't afraid to poke fun at itself, which is a nice change from all the paranormal books that take their own mythology so seriously. Speaking of which, I also enjoyed the reveal of Pia's mysterious past and her...powers. It was a fun surprise and perfectly done.

If you're inclined to read this sort of book, I can't recommend this enough--it's truly the best PNR book I've ever read. Every element that you could consider--the story, the magic, the characters, the romance, the sex, the writing--is absolutely terrific. You really couldn't ask for a more entertaining read.(less)

Even though he came on kind of strong, it was clear that he wouldn't do anything to hurt Pia. He cared enough to make sure that Pia was happy! He brushed her hair all the time! He was actually a softie underneath all that hard scaly dragon armor! Ms. Harrison knows how to write this kind of hero very well!

Dragos is like a Harlequin Presents hero done well (with an intensity times one hundred). He is unbelievably wealthy, prominent and gorgeous. He is also immensely powerful. And he was done so well, there was never that incredulity factor where I have this sarcastic cheerleader moment in my head: "Yay, he is so awesome!" (rolls eyes). Dragos truly was awesome! Sick girl that I was, I liked that even though Pia found him hot and fell in love with him, she could still see he was a scary guy. Who doesn't like a guy who would give you the world, but he could also slaughter a whole army of enemies for you? Who's so jealous, he doesn't even like his crew touching you? (PSA awareness moment: Not okay in real life, but I like it in books. So shoot me!)

I thought the world-building was really good. I loved the fact that this book has a strong fantasy element, equal to the romance. It wasn't just a backdrop for paranormal loving (which was verra nice, mind you). There was a lot of thought put into creating this world in which humans live alongside Wyr (shapeshifters) and Faerie folk of all kinds, and old magic is alive and well in this world, and into the adjacent magic realms. It seemed eminently plausible that one of the most powerful economic figures could be an ancient dragon. Don't I wish?

Dragos is an awesome hero, and Pia is an equally awesome heroine. She is gutsy, intelligent, funny, and sweet. She never gave me the urge to ignore her and focus on the hero because I didn't like her. I loved her a lot. I could see myself having similar reactions to the strange circumstances she faces. I loved how utterly fearless (although inwardly quaking) she was when faced with the very scary Dragos, and especially at the end when she finds herself in a very rough situation. I loved her self-deprecating, humorous way of looking at the world, very down to earth and resourceful. I loved her secret heritage, and how Dragos cherished that part of her, and all parts of her. I felt tears brimming when she discovers what she truly is. (You have to understand that I was the little girl who was in love with Pegasus, Unicorns, and all mythical creatures. It was a sweet moment for this little girl who has never truly grown up inside).

I loved Dragos' crew, especially Graydon (who reminded me of Butch from the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward), and Tricks (a very hip elf who works as Dragos' PR rep and happens to be the true heir to Throne of the Dark Fae). How cool was it that his sentinels consisted of four gryphons and a tough female Harpy (she reminded me of my girl Xhex from the Black Dagger books). It was funny how Dragos came to life when Pia came around, and seeing how his crew reacted to the new Dragos.

I don't think my review can really add anything because there are some great reviews out there of this book. I really did love everything about it. It was just hip enough (but not annoyingly so), the story and the fantasy elements were fantastic, there were many laugh out loud moments (this book was really funny), and some poignant moments. I loved the relationship between Pia and Dragos, and how they had to work at some things, but they weren't going to give up on being together. (view spoiler)

I know I want to hug this book tight to my book-loving heart. I will put this out on my favorites shelf for a frequent reread. I can't wait to see what Ms. Harrison does in the next Elder Races books. She has a fan in me!

This dialogue is said by Dragos to Pia and sums up one the reasons I loved this book. An alpha, a predator falling like a ton of bricks check, a heroine who challenges him and calls him on it check, some sexy back-up sentinels check and an extremely well done world-building and romance check. So, see this book has everything going for it.

Pia has always wanted to be loved and because of who she is half-human, half-Wyr she has hidden herself all her life with protective spells courtesy of her mother. Secrecy and the means to make a quick exit(extra identities and cash) has been taught to her by her mother but after her mother's death she grew lonely and made a mistake in trusting one of her secrets to her ex gambling boyfriend , which comes to bite her in the ass. He threatens to out her if she doesn't do something for his associates.
And that something is stealing from Dragos, the oldest and the most meanest Wyr.
So, Pia knows she is pretty much screwed, so she does the job and she does have a conscience, attaches an apology along with it and goes on the run.

Dragos has seen it all and he used to be a hoarder, he is powerful and ruthless and has a temper and in short he is bored, he has all the wealth he could want, his court has his sentinels who look after stuff so when someone manages to steal from him, he becomes livid and the note he finds amuses him as well. Make no mistake he is a predator. He could detect the theft because he knows everything he owns, as he can be very possessive about belongings, so he dispatches his people to look for the offender and when he gets some information he decides to go after Pia himself.

Pia, is something very refreshing for Dragos. He says clearly I will make you regret what you did and listens to the reasons why as well for her deed. He says point blank she intrigues him because even though she is scared of him, she still speaks out her mind and was strong enough to withstand his beguilement and not give away her real name. (People can control you and your power if they know your real name). Also how Pia was able to do something no-one could is of to interest to him, also her Wyr half which she refuses to divulge. Pia also looks after him when he is injured by some of the people looking after her. Dragos breaks "territory agreements" to come after her, so there are repercussions as well from that side and Pia steps in for him there as well, as she says that she is the reason he has to do that. They are attacked by the forces after Dragos and both of them see a different side to each other.
Pia is no shirking violet and she proves this again and again by being resourceful in the face of danger, Dragos's anger and taking on the sentinels as well. She is rightly confused by the changes in her life and ponders about them often. Dragos is "old" so he tends to take life as he comes and Pia does tell him that she is not like him, she has lived as a human and his behavior, his world(with politics, "the other world and creatures" ), is something that may take some getting used to and she needs space.

Don't you love a hero, who melts only for the heroine?And it is so cute to see such a powerful dragon floundering in front of Pia, poor him, he doesn't know if he does things wrong, is puzzled that Pia is a pure vegetarian and has no idea about romance and something called saying "please", he is used to people bowing down to his need, but no, not Pia. Seeing their relationship dynamic was a treat. Pia had to learn to handle such a powerful creature, his temper, his possessiveness and the need for him to cosset her. Seeing the sentinels reactions towards Dragos and Pia were hilarious, they couldn't believe that someone like her could make Dragos melt and turn into another person all together.

The world-building is done wonderfully and the romance is the USP. It is so refreshing and so engrossing. Once you pick up this book you won't feel like putting it down. There are tender moments, sexy moments and laugh out loud moments in the book. Dragos really doesn't get Pia's sarcasm atimes and seeing him fall for Pia was a hoot.

Best scenes: When Pia and Dragos first meet face to face, Pia comforting Dragos and simmering down his jealousy and much more.

I promise, not even I would go looking for Jane Austen socio-economic class stratification and Eldridge Cleaver-style sexual politics (because, ick) in my Dragon fantasy/paranormal romances. I don't. So by the time I finally got a copy of it in my hands, I was sure I was the last person on Earth who had not read it yet. And frankly, I was a little worried that it could not possibly live up to all the hype.

On the off-chance that there are actually other people left who haven't read this, let me give you a quick breakdown on the story. Pia's ex-boyfriend is blackmailing her. He knows some of the secrets about her half-Wyr heritage and is holding that over her head to force her to steal from Dragos... a billionaire businessman and bad-ass dragon shifter. Pia steals a small item and quickly goes on the run... knowing that Dragos will be quickly on her tail. What she has no way of knowing, is how the sight of him will make her go liquid inside.

Dragos is older than time, but has never felt about a woman the way he grows to feel for Pia. When he finds her, his rage at her crimes virtually disappears and transforms into an attraction he can't deny. In short order, he decides to make her his own. But his enemies have other plans. The Dark Fae king targets Dragos, and Pia gets wrapped up in it all. The secrets she has worked to keep her whole life, are threatened; her identity is on the verge of exposure. And while all this is happening, she and Dragos are being sucked deeper and deeper into a tangle of urges and emotions like none they've ever had.

OK. First let me say, that this book is really hot. Great sex. Yum.

Next, I want to acknowledge that this was much more than a romance. Harrison sets up a great world in this book. There are so many ways she can develop future stories with the groundwork she lays here, with the Elder Races. (Though I have to acknowledge that I felt like a total idiot when, halfway through the book, I finally realized that the "Wyr" race were all shifters --or were-animals. Duh, Jen.)

I really liked this book. I think that if everyone hadn't told that I would LOVE it... I probably would have, well, loved it. But expectations are a funny thing. When you're waiting to be totally blown away, even great stories can be anticlimactic. The bottom line is that I understand why there was so much hype. It was sexy and smart with great characters and steamy sex. And I'll be checking my mailbox daily, until Storm's Heart gets here. Almost 5 stars.

Holy crackers, I loved this book! The world that Thea Harrison has created is flat out unique and amazing. It was so refreshing and so engrossing. There were amazingly tender moments, extremely sexy moments, laugh out loud moments and moments where our hero and heroine kicked some serious ass. I'm a sucker for a great fantasy novel, and Harrison does not disappoint with Dragon Bound.

THIS BOOK!

LOVED IT!

Well, not so much the first half - that was just meh. The writing was good, but I just could not get into it. Pia was annoying, but Dragos (insert besotted smile here) was cute from the very beginning.

The second half however, is gold, pure gold. I could not stop giggling while i was reading it. it was funny and sweet and cute.

OH WOW!!! Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought this book would be this good! I absolutely adored it! Helloooooo new favorite! I'm totally hooked, and I can't wait to see more books released in the series.

What's not to love about a Dragon shifter? ...
Dragos Cuelebre = HAWT! You just don't have any idea how hot this guy was. Seriously, my fav in a while, I loved everything about him. The guy was totally alpha material, a caveman on the loose, LOL. He was all you're mine and there's no discussion about it.

"I am cursed with a terminal case of curiosity," he said. "I am jealous, selfish, acquisitive, territorial and possessive. I have a terrible temper, and I know I can be a cruel son of a bitch." He cocked his head. "I used to eat people, you know."

He made me laugh out loud so many times with his attitude, and it's not that he was annoying for being so MACHO because he constantly realized he was doing something wrong and tried to change it to make the heroine feel better. He just couldn't help being like that because the guy is 11000 years old,lol, let's just give him a break. What I loved the most was to see him comprehending what love was because of the new feelings the heroine awoke in him.

"He kissed the palm of her hand. "It means, you stupid woman, that I am learning too. Now you listen to me. I never stop thinking about you. You're with me everywhere I go but I miss you when we're apart. I've already shown that I will kill for you. I would also die for you. You make me laugh. You make me happy. You're my miracle and my home...I will always come for you, always want you, and always need you. We clear?"

She had begun to glow. "Sounds a lot like love to me."

You see? sweet and sexy. But he was so much more than an amazing personality ... he was a dragon, a being who was alive through the beginnings and ending of empires, who saw all the changes the world went through, someone you could talk to all your life and never get bored. And dude ---> A DRAGON, I don't know why but for some reason I just find that totally hot.

A very peculiar heroine ...
I usually never like heroines or remember them much, but I loved this one. I liked that while she preferred not to fight she was able to kick everybody's asses if she wanted to. I loved that through out all the story we knew there was a mystery around her but not exactly what. She had an amazing sense of humor and personality, some of the best jokes were from her. I really liked her.

"He stared at her neck. Realization pulsed. He was looking at the bite he had given her. A hard length was growing against her hip. “So, is that your long, scaly, reptilian tail, or are you just happy to see me?” No, she did not just say that. Did she?"

Then there was the most mind-blowing plot and world building you have ever seen ...
A Dragon king and his most trusted sentinels, the Gryphons. 2 different Fey Courts, Elves and other Elder races as some other minor races. So much power and magic, what's not to love about this series? The characters were amazing and I just can't wait to read more!

Dragos is one of the most(if not the THE most) ancient and powerful beings in the world. He is a Dragon with the temper and acquisitiveness of one. He likes beautiful and unique things. And then comes Pia Giovanni who dears to steal from him, from this point the game is on. Never, but NEVER should you steal from a dragon, you don't know what happens next.

Pia is a 25 year old woman who gets herself in a little tangle, which blows up in her face. Word of advice: take care what you say or do when drunk...

“Which is very reassuring, coming from a pissed-off dragon,” she told him. “Kinda like the whole ‘tell me what I want to know and I’ll let you go’ joke. Definitely has its own charm. I bet all your other prisoners love it.”

“You took a 1962 penny,” Dragos said. His teeth were gritted. “You left a 1975 penny. It’s no replacement.”
She stared at him. “Oh my God, it’s scary you noticed that.”
“I know everything in my hoard and exactly where it is,” he told her. “Down to the smallest piece.”
“You could go to a doctor, get checked out for OCD,” she panted. “There might be medication for that.”(this one cracked me up)

What an amazing new world Thea Harrison has created. It’s a world filled with elves, faeries, goblins, gryphons and of course our hero, a dragon. Dragos, having been alive for a long, long time, has over time, collected things. A lot of things. He’s hidden his massive collections of everything from artifacts to gold to coins, all over the world. Enter Pia, being blackmailed by her nasty ex-boyfriend, she must steal something from one of Dragos’ hoards, for Keith to turn over to his “associates” – he’s a gambler in debt, and this will supposedly get them off his back. Pia, terrified of what Keith will reveal about her half wyr side, agrees. Using a special ability (one that would come in handy for many book heroines!) she’s able to steal a coin from Dragos’ hoard. A penny to be exact, and when Dragos finds out, he is furious and intrigued all at once. And this begins Dragos’ mission to find his thief.

The worlds Dragos and Pia live in and travel between, both human and Other, are amazing in and of themselves. We’re introduced to Dragos’ closest friends and most trusted allies and his enemies, at the top of that list the Dark Fae King, Urien Lorelle.

But the story for me is Dragos and Pia. Dragos lives a pretty boring life at this point. He collects his treasures and hasn’t been challenged or amused by much in a very long time. What initially starts as a plan to catch his thief and get vengeance turns into one of the most interesting and sweet love stories I’ve read in a long time. Seeing Dragos try to understand Pia, the things she says, her reactions, are so funny. I found myself laughing out loud throughout the whole book. To say he’s intrigued by her would be an understatement. He’s incredibly possessive, and goes from considering her his own personal possession (“I do not endanger my treasures.”) to having her come to mean so much more (“…they hurt her. They hurt her, and that hurt him inside somewhere, in a place he had never been hurt before.”)

Pia is the heroine you can’t help but love. She’s a mystery throughout most of the story, a mystery to Dragos, to us the readers and even to herself. Her mother safe guarded her ability to shift for reasons we find out towards the end of the book, and they are HUGE reasons. Even when everything in her life is heading downhill fast, she fights. That’s one of the best things you can say about a character. She doesn’t wallow, even when she has plenty of reasons to, she stands up to Dragos, which of course only amuses and pleases him even more, and she just wants to find her place, one where she has someone to love and is loved in return.

No story would be complete with my total love of the side characters and Dragon Bound has some unforgettable ones. Pia finds herself surrounded by Dragos’ inner circle, including his best friend Rune, Constantine, Graydon and Bayne. Graydon…I love you. Not only was he fun to read, but his friendship with Pia, when she most needed a friend was so sweet to see. Tricks, full name: Thistle Periwinkle, is the PR rep for Cuelebre Enterprises, a Dragos company, and big changes are in store for her. She’s our lead for book 2 and I can’t wait! And please, please let there be more of Drunk Tricks. She’s fun when she gets tipsy. Hell, she’s funny when she’s sober too:

“…I’m so sorry about what my Uncle Urien did to you guys. I hate him, he killed my family, and we’re going to cut off his head, and then I have to be Queen, but before that happens let’s do lunch, okay?”

If you love PNR – this is a MUST read. As in must read right now! I haven’t flat out enjoyed a book this much in a long time and I’m counting down impatiently to book 2. (less)

What a great book and an exciting start to a new series. Dragos was perfect. He was so alpha yet he was willing to bend for Pia. I have a new place on my harem list and Dragos might have zoomed to the top.

Definitely a favorite for 2011.

I ADORED this book! I think it has topped my best debut author and books this year. The worldbuilding, which features fae/elves and wyrs (shifters) was well thought out and was solid but the real joy was with the romance. I got a funny feeling that this will become an uber popular series amongst PNR/Romance fans. I have been burned out on PNR the past year or so and I rarely picked up a new series because of this but I am so glad I bought this due to the pre-release buzz! The dialogue was snappy...more

Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison is the first book in the Elder Races series. It is a wonderfully rich and entertaining story written in a world that is intriguing and unique. I absolutely loved this book. It has all the elements that I look for in a paranormal romance, a protective and strong Alpha male, a smart heroine that gives as good as she gets, outstanding secondary characters and a story that grabs your attention and doesn't let go. A different take on the Dragon theme. I liked most of it, but the story really took off for me at about the halfway mark, when they got back to New York. After that, I was pretty invested in the story. The first sex scene needed a little more finesse; all that thrusting and digging of tongues, and 'gobbling her to a climax' gave me the giggles. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of some of the silly sex language, and because it was dreadfully slooowww up until the the 50% point....more

This book feels like a guilty pleasure, though I don't think it's really all that bad for you, even given its super Alpha hero and the "mating" business. For one thing, it makes sense that Dragos would be kinda possessive and medieval--he's a friggin' milleniums-old DRAGON (shapeshifter). And the heroine calls him out and is herself no fainting daisy.

Hot stuff. With amusing first-person (hers) narration and dialogue. Also, he's a friggin' DRAGON. Ahahahaha!

Oh yeah, and this book does a good job...more
