An important fact this volume is the love triangle born with the appearance of Walter.Personally I find him a really interesting character with all that perplexing aura around him but nevertheless necessary to Ellie.All those conflicted feelings that she experience will play a crucial part in her character development resulting in her final resolution.

As long as I refused to belong to this group, being with Marcus wouldn't be a betrayal. "

I find it a brilliant idea to tell the story from Marcus point of view.It is really enticing knowing the story from his perspective as he struggles to keep Ellie safe .She understands that,which is why she has to keep being strong ,if she will ever get a chance to see him again.

Don't try to talk me out of it, Marcus. I want you to take my heart, my life, my soul. They don't matter. I want to be with you, forever... Just tell me how to die for you.

As a conclusion this this book is full of revealing which is a good thing seeing as the first book left the readers a a little unsatisfied, .It is good to shed some light in the dark..a stunning history,the enigmatic puzzle of feelings and a breath taking climax was all that it takes to mark this as one of my favorite books.

I enjoyed both Pretty in Black and Black Satin, but liked this one slightly more, despite the absence of Marcus. It just had more intensity and conflict and the ending is stunning.

I really love the character Marcus and wish he’d had a bigger presence in Black Satin. He’s almost absent in the book. I got really drawn into his POV in the beginning. Review: This series has something really special going for it, that I didn’t fully see until this installment. If you are stopping in and wondering about book one, Pretty In Black, head on over to the review archive and you will find it there. Anyways, new words are explored and others are given more depth and detail to what we already had known.

I adore Ellie, I believe I mentioned just how much already, but I thought it was worth mentioning again. In this installment Ellie is just as desperate for someone who just understands who she is, and how she feels. Then Marcus, who narrates a portion in the beginning, disappears, and Ellie copes the only way she ever has. She keeps her head down and moves on. All the while enter new guy Walter, who let’s face it is a very attractive love interest. I loved that I doubted him the whole way, even though he offered, basically everything thing Ellie needed. All the while Ellie has to deal with the fact her sister, Darcy, isn’t dead anymore. Which raises questions from those closest to the recently deceased.

While I do see a bit of a parallel to a lot of other books in the genre; love triangles, boy leaves, girl rushes to save boy etc.. I did really enjoy Black Satin. Instead of staring from where Pretty In Black ended, Rae starts from retelling the events from Marcus’s perspective which gives us more information and a better idea of who he is. Then the novel proceeds to move on to new action and events.

I personally enjoyed the new steam punk world Walter takes Ellie to, The Land of Naught. It’s the sort of imagery that cemented how amazing Rae Hachton’s writing is. Which has made me a firm fan of hers and I cannot wait for book three!

I went into this book hoping it would answer some of the questions that went unanswered in the end of Pretty in Black. And it did...kind of.

As it turned out, Ellie was granted one wish by Marcus (don't ask me how), and she wished to have her sister alive and her family back together...so that's what happened there. I'm still not too clear on how he made it happen. But, a couple of people, including Ellie's ex-boyfriend Declan and her ex-BFF Madison, remember that Darcy is supposed to be dead. So, not everything is going smoothly in that facet.

I also found out the deal with the blond guy, Paul, who talked to Ellie in the previous book. It turns out that he's a pretty bad guy. But I don't understand his role in the story at all. His story arc could have been completely left out, in my opinion, because I'm not sure at all what it contributed to the book as a whole.

Ellie and Walter has a weird, tumultuous relationship--but for the record, I am on Team Walter. This book in particular started to smack of Twilight a bit too much for me. A girl falls in love with her best guy friend after her boyfriend disappears? Yeah...there's even an old Native American man who tells Ellie a story of how his people, the wolves, used to hunt "the cold ones."

In any event--this book was not BAD, it just wasn't particularly stellar to me. I enjoyed towards the end when Ellie started FINALLY using some of her hunter skills and actually fighting for herself. Once again, this book left me with a lot of loose ends...which means I may have to read the next in the series to find out if they get tied up.(less)

Black Satin begins in a rather unique way, so for anyone who hasn't read the first book, you can follow along, for awhile. Eventually you'll have questions that can only be fully answered by reading the first book. It begins with a replay of the key events, but it's from Marcus' point of view. Ingenious!

Eventually we meet back up with the lovely Ellie. She quickly realizes that when she told Marcus she wanted her family back that it wasn't what she truly wanted, no it wasn't what her heart wanted. But it's too late, and Marcus has left her as he plans to walk through to be reborn. Of course Ellie has no clue what is going on, and desperately tries to find him.

However, her ex-boyfriend starts making threats about how he remembers her sister dieing, and the new guy at school, Walter, steps in to save the day. Ellie quickly realizes that she has strong feelings for Walter, the same feelings she has for Marcus. It becomes harder and harder for her to choose, even after he saves her life from a ripper who had already claimed the lives of two classmates.

Does Ellie have the strength to make the choice, knowing it will be final? Does Marcus pass through? Homestly folks, there is so much going on that what I've covered is a small tidbit, a tiny morsel, of the evolving story of not only Ellie and Marcus, but more in-depth with the Corvidae hunters, the gargoyles, and let's not forget the Evermores. With that being said, this is a highly recommended darker young adult read, and author to follow. While it's yet to be seen if Ellie with have a “Happily Ever After”, it's clear that the choices she makes will not make it easier for her obtain. I really like that message, because love isn't easy and neither is life. Bravo!(less)

I was a little confused at the start of this book, but then I got where Rae was coming from. I did expect it to continue from where Pretty In Black finished, it kind of reverted to back pedaling and being seen through Marcus's eyes, which did answer some questions from book 1.

What I didn't expect was the rather exceptional recap of Pretty in Black that not only reminded me of all the drama that went down, but also enlightened me with some very new and gripping details told from the perspective of Marcus.

I was expecting the story to pick up from where Ellie left off, meaning after she woke up from death. What I didn't expect was the rather exceptional recap of Pretty in Black that not only reminded me of all the drama that went down, but also enlightened me with some very new and gripping details told from the perspective of Marcus.

Rae gave quite a lot of insight on the existence of evermores, corvidaes and goyls, and I do mean a lot. I'm just happy she made it interesting and somewhat educating. I was almost thrilled to learn more about Marcus; in particular, how and when he became an evermore. Something that messed me up was the role Jillian played in Marcus' past as a human. I always knew that witch had a thing for my gothic hottie but wow, once those very interesting facts came to light I was completely baffled. I didn't see that one coming at all. Readers are definitely kept busy by the element of surprise throughout this entire story, which is just as remarkable if not far exceeding the first.

Once the story continues, hence, the start of Black Satin, we begin to see the kind of life Ellie is now living. While she's happy to have the people she once lost around her again, Ellie's doing her best to cope with the agony of whether or not she'll ever be reunited with Marcus. She's desperate to find answers as to what happened on that frightful night of her supposedly death, and how exactly did Marcus manage to "reverse" the tragedy in her life. Ellie knows she has to move on rather than drown in her sorrow. Her fighting spirit is quite admirable, as it was from the beginning, but how can she find any solace when strange things keep happening around her. Paul has some creepy kind of fascination with her, Declan and Madison keep badgering her about Marcus and his 'monstrous' persona, and there's so much unexplainable mystery surrounding the new guy who Ellie can't help but feel attracted to. That part just pissed me off because I'm always rooting for Marcus, but I guess love triangles brew excitement. Anyways, with so many questions, Ellie thinks that Giles could possibly be the only one to provide answers, which he does but reveals more or less than what she's bargained for. Some rather astonishing news leave Eleanor confused about her very existence and the part she plays in the war between evermores and corvidaes. Her confusion diminishes over time with the help of some new and significant characters.

The story is definitely entertaining as there's a lot taking place. However, you'll keep up with the sometimes draggy pace just as you're unwilling to break from your reading because you'd like to know more.

The writing style is still as remarkable as before and I love how in the midst of everything our lead female character is experiencing growth. You can't help but love Ellie and even mature along with her. She embodies characteristics that are quite hard to find in reality. Such bravery is rather difficult to fathom.

Another thing you'll notice is that Black Satin dealt with Ellie more so than Marcus. With every chapter I missed him terribly. In fact, I think I longed for him more than Ellie did. Is something wrong with this picture? I'm sorry Rae but what the hell, I know you wanted to make room for this intriguing new entry but dark shadows, name calling, and pitiful dreams weren't enough page time for Marcus. His presence is absolutely necessary to keep me interested. Well, at least the ending delivered something fantastic. I didn't see that coming.

Black Satin is a decent sequel offering more of everything; more character development, more drama, more emotions, more background, just more. Rae Hachton did not disappoint, but she didn't impress me as much this time around. Still, it was a fairly good read. I'm anticipating the third book and itching to see how Ellie and Marcus' relationship will turn out.

Black Satin tour, here it is! So here I am, listening to some Cocteau Twins to set the mood, and I’m just going to type it out. And in many ways, it fits the Cocteau Twins’ music. It was dreamy, it flowed well, and it transported you to another place. HERE is my review of Pretty in Black.

Black Satin is the sequel to Pretty In Black. The beginning kind of reviews some of the first book, which I appreciated. Not so much because I needed the refresher, I read them back to back. But I appreciated it because I really loved the style Rae Hachton writes with. In fact, Black Satin even jumps a little bit ahead of Pretty in Black to give you some more background on Marcus.

“Being with Ellie is like having a constant adrenaline rush shoot through me, electrifying my spirit.”

In the beginning of this story I felt like the detail was more finely tuned than in its predecessor. But that is also partly because of the review from the first book, except from a different POV. We learn about Marcus and how he and Michael are in a challenge to become Prince of Nevermore when Zarfe retires. Kind of like a “Let the best man win” type of situation, and we get a bit more history about Jillian and Walter. And the Jillian/Walter/Marcus triangle. And then that morphs into a Walter/Ellie/Marcus triangle. Except that it doesn’t, not for Ellie.
Ellie is unwavering in her love for Marcus, and that’s what I loved. She wants to be with him. Sure, there are moments where she thinks, hey, maybe I can be with this other guy. But she knows she is fooling herself. Marcus has her heart in a vice grip, and if he walks into the everafter, she may as well pass on too.

The cons: I don’t like the whole Nevermore Slayer aspect. As in book one, I felt that it’s been done, and that it wasn’t really needed to tell the story. The Pros: Gargoyles!! Yep! This book has gargoyles! I’ve not read any books really with gargoyles, so this was a very special treat. This book will have you going through time and space, and it does get a bit steampunk in certain areas, which was totally unexpected. I’ve never finished a steampunk book and liked it, but this was pretty alright. Really, with gargoyles, vampires, and many love triangles, the steampunk barely phased me.

All in all I definitely give this book a thumbs up. It was dramatic and unique. I’ve honestly never read anything like it. The author really has a beautiful style with words, and that beauty more than makes up for where the storyline stumbles a bit.

After reading the first book in this series I was really curious to see where the story would go. You can see my review here. I love how this one starts off from Marcus's POV and we get to see how some of the events that unfolded were in his eyes. We also get a bit of background on some of the stuff in Nevermore and how he actually died and came to be an Evermore. After that we jump right back into the story where book one left off in Ellie's POV. She is...more *This I actually would rate as 3.5 stars.

After reading the first book in this series I was really curious to see where the story would go. You can see my review here. I love how this one starts off from Marcus's POV and we get to see how some of the events that unfolded were in his eyes. We also get a bit of background on some of the stuff in Nevermore and how he actually died and came to be an Evermore. After that we jump right back into the story where book one left off in Ellie's POV. She is lost and heartbroken and trying to pull herself together. The first few chapters really set the tone for the book perfectly.

Ellie is broken, but hopeful in this one. I really do admire her strength. She is also confused because there is a new guy at school who really is quite charming and pretty hot. He has eyes only for her, and he also stands up for her and is a bit of a trouble maker. (Which is totally hilarious) This new guy, Walter stirs up all sorts of feelings in her, but she is completely in love with Marcus so she doesn't want to let herself get close to him. She is struggling with the idea that Marcus may never come back, but she doesn't want to try to move on in case he does. She feels like they are meant to be in life and death and the feelings she starts to have for Walter really make things hard and confusing. I get a bit irritated that she seems to be bouncing back and forth and knows that she is hurting Walter though. It's selfish. I get that she is confused though. On top of that she finds out a few secrets about herself and her family that make things even harder.

There's some major stuff going on with a ripper too. This dude is killing high school kids. Ellie knows who it is, and she knows that she can stop him if only she takes on her Corvidae Hunting duties. She needs to make the decision to become one of the Hunters or to try to fix things on her own. She knows that joining the Hunters would mean she would have to kill Marcus if she see's him again, but she thinks she could fight it. That is really the least of her worries at the moment though. As we find out things are a lot crazier than that.

This book takes us to the next level. There is a lot more danger, more heartache, romance, and we get to see some more really cool places like The Land of Naught. I really loved that part of the book. The descriptiveness was so fabulous that I could envision it so easily. I can't really say too much without spoiling things for you, but I really enjoyed this book. In fact I liked it more than the first and can see my love for this series growing with each book. I am looking forward to the next book.(less)

Well, I've been debating it and this was an incredibly hard choice to make on how to rate this book, because even though it has Gargoyles (& a very sexy one named Walter, at that!) a steampunk flare, and a dramatic and explosive ending that will forever remain the most gorgeous ending to a book that I have ever read, and also my most favorite to write, I STILL have to give this book 4 stars because let's just face it, Marcus Marble doesn't have too many appearances in this segment of the ser...more

Enter Walter, the new student, who is instantly attracted to Ellie, is devastatingly good looking and have an air of mystery surrounding him. This is where the story gets off-track. I personally think the story could have easily moved forward even without Walter. It just complicated things and as for the role Walter played, that could have been fulfilled by Fifi. The reason I am saying this is because being as feisty and smart as Ellie is, the more quickly Walter fell for Ellie. In fact, it was insta-love for them. I think it made Black Satin a somewhat ordinary story.

However, I saw Ellie grow in Black Satin even though she seemed to neglect her family for Marcus which is understandable but not to the extent that Ellie went to. The dream sequence scene where Ellie dreams of clocks is visually simulating scene and I was entranced. Walter, on the other hand, is a character who is capable of competing with Marcus for Ellie; he has that factor.

Marcus was absent from most of Black Satin. At the start of the book, there is a chapter that narrates the scene from Marcus' point of view when Ellie and Marcus first meet in the cemetery. I found it to be a pleasant addition as it provided me with a much needed insight on the character of Marcus.

In all, Black Satin is an interesting read and I would be continuing the story to its last quartet. The rituals of the Nevermores, the journey of Ellie to the Land of the Naught and finally, the race against time to get to Marcus before he passes over during the Risorgimento ceremony is what Black Satin is all about. The spunk Ellie has is very likable and I look forward to reading more from Rae Hachton.(less)

Black Satin starts out with Marcus Marble's point of view. It was very interesting to find out some of the history that takes place before Ellie and Marcus' first encounter in Pretty in Black. We also get to find out more about Nevermore and some of the other characters that we were introduced to in the first book. Marcus has been threatened by the evil Jillian, who told him that if he doesn't give Ellie up and pass through to the other side at the Risorgimento, that she would murder her, because Ellie is a Corvidae hunter and destined to kill Evermores. In order to protect Ellie, Marcus agrees to leave, but he doesn't leave Ellie unprotected......enter the totally hot, funny, and swoon worthy Mr. Wagner.

The book then switches to Ellie's point of view. Ellie is happy to have her family back, but she is very distraught over Marcus' disappearance and is determined to find him. She ends up meeting with Giles and we get to find out a great deal more about the Corvidae hunters. She also meets Walter, a new hot guy that is going to her school that she is attracted due, but she is conflicted about her feelings because she loves Marcus. Ellie also finds out some things about herself and who she really is that she didn't know, which are extremely important and explain a great deal. Her quest to find Marcus leads her into the land of Naught and the world of the Goyls, where she meets some very interesting creatures/friends, who help to train her to fight. Her feelings for Walter are growing stronger, yet she is still in love with Marcus. Ellie has to make a very difficult decision, but who and what will she choose.

Black Satin continues where Pretty in Black leaves off. It is a dark Gothic paranormal romance filled with all kinds of mythological creatures and places. Rae Hachton introduced us to the the world of the Evermores and the land of Nevermore in Pretty in Black, and we get to meet the Goyls and visit the Land of Naught in Black Satin. We also find out that Ellie is a kick-butt heroine. I am looking forward to finding out what we will be introduced to in the third book of the series, Raven in the Grave. Rae Hachton has created and world filled with dark fantasy, Gothic romance, and all kinds of imaginative creatures. The book is fast paced and keeps your attention. The Pretty in Black Series was really the first dark Gothic romance I have read, and I found it very interesting and enjoyable. If you enjoy this genre, then you will enjoy Black Satin, and if your curious about this genre, then this is a great series to check out. (less)

Well as always Rae has managed to create a beautiful world I totally get lost in. Her writing leaves a feeling of dark and beautiful. With the second book in the Pretty in black series I have come to like all the characters a bit more. Ellie is funny and very inquisitive, never keeps her mouth shut for no one. It's hard for me to put into words why I love this series so much. I suppose it could be how the author connects me to the characters. I feel their emotions as if they were my own. It could also be the detailed world-building that lets me see exactly the environment in which the characters dwell. Or possibly, it's the staccatic writing style that really seems to work for me. I loved Black Satin! This was a perfect sequel to Pretty In Black and the beginning was written wonderfully with Marcus' point of view of details that happened in Pretty In Black. I do however recommend reading Pretty In Black first because you will miss out on other important details. I love Rae's writing style and the imaginative dark world that she has created. I really enjoyed this segment of the quartet. The author gave us a refreshing reminder of book one and then dove headfirst into the deep end of the pool with the story. There were twists and turns that I never would have expected. I loved following my favorite characters through this part of the story and was totally disappointed when it ended. I can't wait to see where the author takes us in book three! I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good action packed Goth story :)
