The Taste of Dreams is both a quest for the romantic Russia of the author’s dreams, and a tale of amazement as she discovers and gets caught up in the new, anarchic Russia emerging from its Soviet constraints. At its heart is the story of caviar—beluga, the rarest type of sturgeon, harvested from the Caspian Sea. It is now an endangered species, and no one knows how to—or ...more

The Taste of Dreams is okay, while not superb. It cannot be strictly read as a historical source, but as a good first-person view over the situation of post-Soviet Russia and the areas near the Caspian Sea. It's informative yet lightly written, it skims on the topic quite nicely without getting too deep on the political situation (when you consider it, you do not think about your country's political situation every minute of your day).

In the end, this book ultimately boils down to being a good p

Vanora Bennett is a journalist and has worked a lot in Russia. This wonderful book is a travelogue following her obsession with Russia and caviar. Bennett is a generous and gifted writer and this book is a vivid portrayal of a country going through social upheaval. At the same time she outlines the cultural and natural history of caviar and the sturgeon, charting the effects of smuggling and overfishing on the sturgeon's populations in and around the Caspian Sea. Far from being heavy and worthy ...more

This book was a light skating over Russian history from the times of earliest Russian expansion into the Caucuses until recent times with the rise of Vladimir Putin. It was read knowing thinking it was more journalism than history like a Robert Kaplan book but sadly it turned out to be more chick-memoir than anything else. Thus there was no harm done in reading it but there was not a whole heck of a lot picked up from it either. Not really recommended to those trying to learn a little more about ...more

Picked from a friend's bookshelf and read on holiday in the Wicklow mountains, I loved this book. Read as a genuine adventure, an autobiographical odyssey- it is still one that I remember as un-put-downable. I would reread it if I came across it again!

I became a journalist almost by accident. Having learned Russian and been hired after university by Reuters (to my own surprise and the slight dismay of traditionally-minded editors who weren’t sure a Guardian-reading blonde female would be tough enough for the job), I was then catapulted into the adrenaline-charged realm of conflict reporting. While on a trainee assignment in Paris, I fell in wit ...more
