This fourth book in the Selena Alvarez/Regan Pescoli series is my first experience with a book written by this author. I was hooked very early into the story that is more mystery/suspense than romance.

The story is mainly told through Detectives Alvarez and Pescoli, but we also get into the minds of some of the victims, the serial killer, those that find the bodies and Dylan O’Keefe, now a PI who had once worked with Alvarez in the San Bernadino PD until she’d messed up and a set-up went horribly...more

Its Christmas time in Grizzly falls, which means another serial killer, is on the loose. This one is abducting women and freezing them to death. He then sculpts them into ice sculptures that he displays around town. And, strange enough each victim has been found with a piece of Selena’s stolen jewelry on them.

Then, a teen on the run breaks into Selena’s house as she is coming home, followed by an old flame, Dylan O’Keefe, who is trying to catch him. Seeing Dylan brings back a lot of old memories that Selena would rather not remember, but that’s nothing compared to the emotions invoked by the young teen, Gabriel, who Selena is convinced is the son she gave up for adoption when she was 16 after being raped and impregnated by her cousin, Emillio. Now she’ll do anything to protect him. So when the killer gets his hands on Gabriel, she has no choice, but to act even though she knows it’s a trap.

I’ve been waiting a couple of months to get my hands on this book. I was pretty disappointed with its predecessor, Born to Die, but was hoping it was just a fluke and that this installment would have the heart-pumping action I’ve come to expect from Lisa Jackson.

I was sad that this book had a pretty slow start to it and I was really starting to feel the ‘here we go again’ vibes. I don’t even think the problem was that too much was going on, but more that the story was switching narrators so often that it was sometimes hard to determine what was going on in the beginning of the book. But not to worry, once the storyline was outlined and things started going good, they kept getting better. I ended up really enjoying the book and its suspenseful conclusion.

One thing that I didn’t like was that the book never explained why the killer had a vendetta against Selena. Surely he wasn’t doing all of this over a chance meeting at a grocery store. He had worked for her for how many years after that as her handyman? That just doesn’t pan out for me, there has to be more to it, but it was never fully explained.

It was nice to see that the seemingly perfect Selena Alvarez isn’t so perfect after all; that she like everyone else, has skeletons in her closet as well. What happened to her at the hands of her own cousin was horrible and really made you feel for her. I was glad to see that she could come to grips with her past and that by the end of the book she was able to start a relationship with her long lost son. And, of course with her old flame, Dylan, as well, although I was expecting her to hook up with Grayson until O’Keefe came to town! But I really did enjoy Alvarez and Dylan together and hope that we will get to see more of them (along with more Santana, since there wasn’t nearly enough of him in this one) in the next installment of the series. No word on the next book in the series, but I assume there will be one since the whole Padgett storyline is still left hanging out there.

I enjoyed this book and think any crime and mystery fan will as well, especially those that are already familiar with the series! I’m looking forward to the next installment, which hopefully won’t be too far into the future!

Shelves: mystery, used-to-own

The fourth in the "To Die" series started off as a definate page-turner, as the reader was able to get an automatic glimpse into the killer's head. It's about a man who turns women into ice sculptures and puts them on display all over the town of Grizzly Falls. It is also about a former lover of Alvarez's and a teenage boy with a mysterious connection to her.

It was an awesome book, and I had a hard time putting it down. It is definately a must read to those who like crime and mystery.

I really enjoyed this 4th book about police detectives Selena Alvarez and Regan Pescoli.

We follow Pescoli's problems as the single mom of a 20 year old immature son Jeremy who thinks he should live rent-free off of his mother and be a slacker who plays computer games and runs around with friends. Her 16 year old daughter Bianca loves spending time with her stepmom Michelle at her dad's much more electronically endowed home and is equally troublesome. Frankly, if I were Regan, I would drop Jeremy...more I really enjoyed this 4th book about police detectives Selena Alvarez and Regan Pescoli.

We follow Pescoli's problems as the single mom of a 20 year old immature son Jeremy who thinks he should live rent-free off of his mother and be a slacker who plays computer games and runs around with friends. Her 16 year old daughter Bianca loves spending time with her stepmom Michelle at her dad's much more electronically endowed home and is equally troublesome. Frankly, if I were Regan, I would drop Jeremy off with his belongings on the main street of Grizzly Falls, Montana where they live and change the locks before driving Bianca and her stuff to her dad's house to live for good. The stress they put on her and the way they treat her is crappy.

We learn a lot more about Selena in this book including the fact that she was raped at 16 by a drunken cousin who threatened to come back with his brothers and rape her and her little sister if she told anyone. She had been a virgin and was left pregnant with a son she was sent out of town to have and to give up for adoption.

Private investigator Dylan O'Keefe has followed his cousin Aggie's adopted 16 year old son to Grizzly Falls. He once knew-and fell in love with -Selena and is shocked when the boy goes to her townhouse and breaks in! He soon finds out-along with Selena- that the boy is the baby son Selena gave away years earlier.

As has occurred over the past three winters, there is a serial killer on the loose. He pretends his car has broken down and when the women, who have all seen him in the stores and restaurants in town as well as the church with his wife stop, they trust him only to get stunned with a stun gun, frozen to death, and placed as statues- with a piece of Selena's jewelry- in the most unlikely places as art sculptures (even at the church in the outdoor nativity scene).

As Regan and Selena deal with their personal problems, they must track down the killer and try to save Gabe. Dylan gets under Selena's skin (and more places) and this makes for an exciting and rather sexy story full of terror, emotion, and violence. This is an excellent read.(less)

This book started off so strong and creepy in the actions of the serial killer and the smartassedness of a supporting character. I was thrilled that I found another twisted sister who wasn't afraid to show her inner twistedness. As with most thriller/mysteries written by female mystery writers, it then took the romance dance/loaded down with emotions route. It seems as if this author is now pumping books out just to get them out with no thoughts of editing or proofreading. I used to like this author, and I still kind of do, but the last few books I've read have been riddled with grammar errors and things that just plumb don't make sense, this title included.

First off, I like the characters and the setting in the Pescoli/Alvarez/Grizzly Falls series. I don't mind the fact that the town seems full of crazies, so much so that this fictional town has been plagued by serial killers for the last four years, and yet there are still fictional residents in this fictional town. I guess fictional people don't have the common sense to flee once they notice the trend of killers that keep on a' comin. Don't mind it at all, keeps me reading and involved with characters I've grown to like.

What I don't like - there are so many grammatical errors and run-on sentences that it's super confusing. There are also a whole host of words that are constantly repeated, mainly the word "damned". It's ridiculously overused, appears AT LEAST once a page. That's annoying. An author has every tool at their fingertips to expand their writing language and these tools should be implemented. And it wasn't just this book, it was all of them in the series. The whole "damned" series, I kid you not. Not to mention, everyone is constantly "muttering under their breath" or "saying under their breath" and "whispering under their breath ". I'm OK with parts not having dialogue. These random mutterings to the characters selves aren't needed just to add dialogue. It's perfectly fine to add it as a thought instead of dialogue. It's only something that adds to the readers frustration as something that is (again) constantly repeated. And the new, stupid sounding phrases that kept popping up. "Funny that." "Weird that." "Weird all that." They sound stupid and I've never heard anyone say that in my life.

Another thing - sloppy errors keep popping up. Here is an example from the book - The killer is talking to his wife in the morning, she heads to the kitchen to make coffee and breakfast. The "smell of fresh coffee wafts through the house" (quote taken from book), yet read further down the page and they are continuing the conversation while she makes said coffee. Come on, really? Think it out, let it fester, rearrange it so it makes sense. Not to mention the dog, whose name is Cisco according to all the books in this series, is alternately being called Cisco and Chico in this book, and Kayan Rule gets called Rule Kayan several times.. Sloppy mistakes! Errors in one book I can understand. Maybe an editor got fired and they are shorthanded. But when stupid errors keep popping up in every book, it makes me think that books are published just to get out there.

I have a hard time taking authors seriously when editing and proofreading seem to take a backseat to just getting the book on the shelves, and this author is no exception. Hopefully things change, because I really like(d) this author and would like to see the quality improve to what it once was.(less)

Not that i want to hear Christmas music. But it takes place in winter. Selena Alvarez and partner Regan Pescoli, have another serial killer on the loose. Actually, I liked this book more than three stars reveals. There was a good bit of repetition and overwriting -- which in my opinion should have been caught by her editors and are not a reflection of the author's ability to rock a story. I did end up buying another book of hers immediately afterward "You Don't Want to Know," in fact.

I am a huge fan of reading crime thrillers, and Lisa Jackson is one of my favorite crime thriller writers. This was the fourth in her series involving the town of Grizzly Falls, and Detectives Alvarez and Pescoli (2 Females). I thought it was a great read and kept me on the edge the entire time. This is the 4th story in the Pescoli/Alvarez series. The past stories have not really been about Selena Alvarez as much as Regan Pescoli. In this story, Afraid to Die, we find out some of Alvarez's secrets and we get to meet some of the people involved. She has always been a "by the book" kind of cop that lives her job and little else, but the happenings in the story force her to face her past and help find a new Christmas killer in their town of Grizzly Falls. This was a pretty good book. The book was really hard to get into. The author kept switching back and forward between characters, which was a little aggravating at times. She did a great deal of scenes from the killer’s point of view, what he was thinking, what he was going to do, and how he was going to do it. These scenes made the book slow down. This was enjoyable. I haven’t read the other books of the series, but there’s enough background to give you the gist of things. I do find it a little odd that serial killers keep ending up in this tiny Montana town during the holidays, but it wouldn’t be the first fictional location to see more than its share of strangeness. I didn't really enjoy this. There was way too much irrelevant detail in the story, considering how brief the final stand off was. The constant repetition of Pescolis children trouble and Selenas past experiences got boring and they didn't progress, they just complained. Also multiple sentences ended in exclamation points which just weren't appropriate for the style of the book... Really enjoyed this book. At first the jumping around of characters bothered me, but ended up coming out great.

One thing I really loved about this book was Lisa Jackson is a local artist. I grew up less than 15 miles from the "Small Tiber Town in Oregon". The places she talked about I know exactly where they are, and have lived or gone through them in almost on a daily basis.

It has been a while since I have read anything from her, but I am now going to do more.

Definitely not one of Lisa Jackson's better ones . . . I didn't like how she kept referring to the main characters who were detectives by their last names . . . and the detectives were women and it got all confusing . . . . and I still don't know "why" the crazy murderer froze the women in blocks of ice and then made ice statues . . . odd . . . let's just say I like the other books of Lisa Jackson's that I have read much better!

I'm a big Lisa Jackson fan, but I ended up feeling like I'd read this book before. It's winter. Again. There's a serial killer (again). Pescoli's kids act up. Again. Nutty Christmas lady at the police station bedecks the halls. Again. The only new thing was Alvarez' boyfriend. If Ms. Jackson wants to write more Grizzly Falls stories, let's have a change of season, a change of story type, and have some of the characters mature.

Amazing storyteller. I loved how "Afraid To Die" had so many different things going on and Lisa Jackson somehow tied it all together into one suspenseful, thrilling mystery novel. Some loose ends in this book, though. I guess there were just too many things going on. But she is such a detailed writer, sometimes too detailed, that you have the characters and their lives pictured perfectly in your head as if you were watching it narrated in a movie.

Three woman have gone missing and when two of them appear they have pieces of Detective Selena Alvarez's stolen jewelry displayed on their nude bodies. Selena has to deal with a couple of secrets from her past that turn her life upside down.

I found this book enjoyable but lacking the normal intensity of other Jackson books. Two people meet up again after many years, one chasing a runaway and the other trying to solve the grizzly murders which have started up during a frigid Montana winter. As they begin to work together, they begin to rebuild a relationship that had never quite died. Discoveries are made and long unanswered questions are resolved.

The unique thing that rates this book 5 stars is the clever way the kills are done-- the women are encased in ice! I won this book through a Goodreads Firstreads giveaway. Even though this is the fourth book in the series, and the first book I have read of the series, I really liked this book. I did not feel lost or that I should not have read this book as I did not read the previous ones. Lisa Jackson's "Afraid To Die" is the 4th book in the Selena Alvarez/Regan Pescoli novels. Grizzly Falls once again lives up to its name for the two police detectives. We learn more of Selena's secret past while Regan is continuing to decide if she'll move into her lover's home all the while attemptimg to solve their current case. Yes,I want a 5th book with these two detectives!

Shelves: beach-reads, thriller

This book started out interesting but quickly dwindled. There was more emphasis on the main character's personal life than on the actual "thrill" of the crimes being committed. The development of the killer's character almost felt like an after thought. I should have just read the ending but wanted to see if it got back on course as the plot went on. It didn't.
