Landau offers an engaging, contemporary look at the Veterans Day holiday. Red, white, and blue headings highlight the brief text accompanying each colorful double-paged spread. Eye-catching photographs show members of each branch of the armed forces interacting with civilians in a variety of positive settings: on parade floats, marching, in ceremonies, and in classrooms. President Obama is depicted giving speeches and honoring war veterans.

This introduction to Veterans Day is written with simple vocabulary that enables it to be used by beginning readers. The author provides brief background for the holiday and describes some of the events such as parades and guest speakers at schools that honor the nation's veterans. The I Like Holidays! series, of which this one is a part, feature large photographs, suggested websites, and a "What You Can Do" activity that gives readers a chance to create something and make a veteran feel valued.

Interesting. The book begins with the glossary. The facts are simple, but clear. The real life photos are a beneficial addition to show emotion in the text. Includes age-appropriate activity at the end.
