I find this to be a valuable reference book. The development of western civilization and the Christian Church have been intertwined for 2000 years and as a cultural reference this is the most interesting book I have found so far. My copy is almost as old as I am and I bought it used but feel so very fortunate to have found a copy at all.So many of our cultural references are their basis in the church and I often find an explanation for a habit or custom that has its' origins in the popular lore ...more

The standard desk top reference which I keep within easy reach. The only reason It does not get five stars is its English Church focus which comes up short for some basic American church topics. Easily fixed by putting the Dictionary of Christianity in America right beside it.
