It’s a perfect beach day, or so thought the family, young couple, a few tourists, and a refugee who all end up in the same secluded, idyllic cove filled with rock pools and sandy shore, encircled by green, densely vegetated cliffs.
But this utopia hides a dark secret.
First there is the dead body of a woman found floating in the crystal-clear water.
Then there is the odd...more

A man hiding on the cliff face of a beach watches a young woman skinny dip in the sea. A couple of families show up early to the beach to set up their stuff before the crowds appear and one of them discovers the young woman floating face down in the sea - or at least she was young, not now. Slowly as more people appear on the beach they notice strange things happening to the kids. The three year old boy suddenly looks much older, at least six, while his five year old sister is taller and beginni...more

A difficult book to rate and review. What's here is a gripping story, well told. (Despite some problems with either the translation or the literal adoption of the French idiom - some of the dialogue is quite bizarre and seems to have been written just to fill the space in the balloons, which seem drawn on the page and therefore need filling up with words!)

It's a gripping, mysterious tale, with excellent art which copes well with the demands made upon it... but there's no rationale or explanation...more

This book is excellent in every respect. On the one hand it has the sensibility of great film or writing for theatre - in particular it is not dogged by any literalness or need to explain what is happening or why: it can just explore the feelings of the moment and the way that characters work together. The bizarreness of a small number of characters trapped in this way made it made me think of plays by Samuel Beckett. It is not surprising to find that author Levy is a film writer.

And on the othe...more

Great self-contained little story about a very unusual day at the beach. Surreal, science fiction-y and somewhat allegorical. I got this because of the great things I had read about it and Frederik Peeter's art in general (his visual style is very good, but perhaps not too original) but Pierre Oscar Lévy's writing is great too. It's sad that he hasn't written any other comics yet. And it's silly having to order this from the UK because it's not available here yet. I think a good way to gauge whe...more

I'm not really sure what to make of this one to be honest. Is it a sci-fi, a mystery or a meditation on mortality and the nature of humanity? Bit of all three, but mostly the latter, I guess. The illustration is excellent anyway, with the depiction of facial expressions and of characters ageing being particularly good. As far as the plot's concerned, I'm unconvinced though. You have to buy in to the premise for any science fiction piece to really work, and with this one I didn't. But having said...more

Joukko ihmisiä jää jumiin rannalle, jossa aika kulkee normaalia nopeammin. Päivän mittaan lapset varttuvat aikuisiksi, aikuiset vanhenevat, vanhukset kuolevat jne.

For the most part I enjoyed this sci-fi, biological mystery and was intrigued to quickly read on. I thought the artwork on the characters faces in particular was excellent and really indicative of their motives and thoughts. However, without giving anything away, for a few pages towards the end, you are taken out of the main story and into an allegory told by one of the characters. I found this part extremely heavy handed. Personally I would have preferred a more subtle approach and think that i...more

The art in this book is excellent. And I love the cover. And it's an interesting, but disturbing story. At times the speech seemed odd, not sure if this is intentional or the result of the translation? Anyway, I'm nit picking... worth a look for sure. It's brilliant that Self Made are offering us these translations, we should lap them up.

Not the best introduction to the genre of the graphic novel, and it certainly doesn't live up to its cover, but it is very light horror that would appeal if you don't have much time or brain power to dedicate to a book. However there are much more superior examples of the genre, such as Persepolis.

It definitely hooks you in and keeps you reading.

Superb! One of the best graphic novels I've read all year. A bit reminiscent of Bunuel's "Exterminating Angel". Tragic and gripping to the last page. Highly recommended.

Scénario étonnant et trait impeccable. Frederik Peeters continue de tracer son chemin à travers des histoires de "fantastique au quotidien". Excellent.
