it was great to come back to author Ann Mayburn's world of gods, goddesses and their human charges. she dazzles us once more with her fertile imagination and remarkable storytelling.
i knew before i stared reading that were there were some BDSM elements included. i am still uncomfortable with them. it was quite a relief that they were not too hard core nor were they the real focus of the story.
i loved reading about Shan, Daisy, the new characters and what threatened Washington, D.C.'s citizens. the bickering between Shan and Devon, their undeniable attraction for each other, what they had to face together to save the city's children, which Goddess finally chooses Shan and the history/mystery of Shan's parentage are some of the highlights of the book.
Dreamer is the second installment in the Chosen by the Gods series. if you happen to read Dreamer first, that is all right as it can pretty much stand on its own but i still recommend everyone to read Blessed, the first book. one's knowledge about what a Chosen or Mentor is and the history between the Gods of Creation and Destruction will be further enhanced. the stories are also different yet there is a connection. characters in Blessed make their appearance in Dreamer and some of them play significant roles whether as major or minor players.
all in all, Dreamer was a satisfying and absorbing read for me. i look forward to finding out in the third book (?) what is in store this time for the next mortal who gets to be blessed and Chosen by the Gods.

I breezed through the first 20% of this book, completely engrossed in the characters, setting, and fast-paced plot; it is incredibly engaging and, from a world-building perspective, not like anything I've read before. I breezed through the first 20% of this book, completely engrossed in the characters, setting, and fast-paced plot; it is incredibly engaging and, from a world-building perspective, not like anything I've read before. Set in our modern day world (Washington DC), in a reality where a religious revolution has taken place and all the various pantheons of the gods throughout history are real and being actively served and worshiped, Dreamer grabs you by the imagination and just keeps reeling you in.

Our heroine is as unique as the setting. A small, young Asian woman whose sense of style is a cross between a goth, a punk, and a princess, Shan is a natural sexual submissive with an otherwise fiery, determined, and passionate personality. She's also a skilled blacksmith and jewelry maker. Seriously, this is a chick I really liked spending time with. Devon, Chosen of the war god Mentu and a captain of the temple guards, first encounters Shan in a BDSM club and is intrigued by just a glance of her. Their next meeting, full of aggression and determination, is just as sexual charged, and the Dom in Devon is incredibly drawn to this girl even though she apparently knows exactly how to make him angry... and excels at it. He'll do anything to protect her, independent rebellious attitude and all.

Unlike Shan's wardrobe, this relationship is not all roses and rainbow sparkles. Shan and Devon share an amusing antagonism toward each other even as they fight their inevitable attraction. I was almost sad to see them finally accept each other as a couple because some of the most enjoyable dialogue came from their bickering... almost. The scorching hot sex and connection between these two definitely makes up for that.

This novel contains elements of and references to BDSM, but is not hard core or over the top... although I would warn the BDSM-shy that it does include some light bondage, improvised clamps, and spanking. Devon, despite Shan's repeated argumentative accusations, is NOT a complete overwhelming asshole, but he does have the most delicious protective and dominating side.

What would it be like to find out you have the power to go into other peoples dreams, to save them from nightmares. Would you do it, or cower in fear? This is a paranormal BDSM romance set in Washington D.C. book two of the Series Chosen by the Gods and OMG is it chock full of mythological and paranormal beings. I really enjoyed the author’s idea of a religious revolution during the 50’s that left the world tightly woven with the supernatural element of gods of various religions entertaining followers and choosing a few select ones to become their hand on earth. The Gods are divided into two factions, the Gods of Creation that act towards good and Gods of Destruction that are evil, each picking a Chosen to express their will and gracing them with supernatural abilities and an extended life span. So, if you’re expecting any vampires/weres/shifters to make an appearance, this is not your pnr novel.

Shan Harrison, a sexually frustrated girl that refuses to accept her submissive sexual desires and also a Chosen-to-be – although she doesn’t know it, begins her journey when her best friend and the daughter of a High Priestess of Aphrodite tries to help her discover why she hasn’t found true love yet and points her to explore what she really wants in sex by visiting the Steel Chalice, a BDSM club. The club is attacked by forces of Destruction and the fun begins.

Devon King, a Dom and a Chosen of the War god Mentu, after a series of children’ kidnappings is assigned by the Gods to protect Shan who is destined to become Chosen of a Dream god and to help defending and defeating the evil forces responsible for said kidnappings and the comatose situation of a good number of priests’ offspring.

During their spending time together, Devon sees Shan beyond her eccentric style and appearance, is tempted by her submissive side and ultimately falls for her while Shan rediscovers herself, fights evil forces in dreams and constantly moons over Devon’s splendid physique.
The sex scenes are hot and dirty, in a good sense. Also important to mention that there is anal play too. The BDSM element of their relationship is so light that it could have been absent and not make a difference to the main plot.

Unfortunately, for a pnr romance, there was more mooning over Devon’s attributes from Shan, than actual romance. The story started well but came quickly to a plateau when the author took the focus out of Shan and Devon and tried to explain in lengthy scenes the situation between the Gods and multiple characters of Chosen, Shan’s dreams, her fighting in those dreams to wake up those falling into a coma because of Destruction and Shan’s trying to grasp her situation with her origins. I didn‘t enjoy the dialogue that rolled in a predictable way and the very frequent mentioning of shit and other smelly products –mostly in scenes where Destruction was present,- spoiled my mood every time. I mean, mentioning it once or twice is enough when the author needed to make a point, but after the n-th repetition I started wrinkling my noise while scenes from the “Dreamcatcher” movie kept playing in my head. The passing from scene to scene also could use some editing for reader's sake in desired focus.

Overall, I gave “Dreamer” 2 stars because the series has great potentials thanks to the very interesting idea of the paranormal –or in this case- supernatural element. Unfortunately, the execution of the idea was not very fulfilling.(less)

Yay for Dreamer! I'm glad Devon got a book and Sub to call his own. Shan is a secretly a sub with a bit of sass! Shan has been having nightmares since childhood and even with her adopted fathers help, they remained violent and gruesome. She finds out she is one the Chosen and will be protected by Devon.

Did someone spill my life story to Ms. Mayburn? Shan in DREAMER could have been me. The similarities shocked me and definitely helped me connect with her as the main character. While I possess no artistic creativity for jewelry and I am not adopted by two white gay men, there were so many other things I had in common with Shan, I was a bit freaked.

Shan is a Chinese woman who experiences nightmares from a young age. She dresses up in Goth gear yet loves Hello Kitty. Her submissive desires frighten her yet pull her in a way she can't explain.

I confess; I have a fetish for Hello Kitty. I can't explain it. Dressing in Goth wear is also my preferred fashion choice – even down to the blue streaks in black hair. While I don't live in a world with mythical gods and goddess, Shan does. Shan has many different ties to the gods through her best friend and parents. What she doesn't know is that she also has a direct line to the gods. The latest battle is around her and which side she will follow – Creation or Destruction. Shan's world is turned upside down as demons are set to attack her. To protect her, Devon is assigned as her guardian. He's a chosen for a war god.

In this world, followers of a war god are territorial, aggressive and sexual dominants. Ms. Mayburn, where do I put in my request for one of these alpha males? Devon is hot! Not only is he an intelligent muscle bound warrior, he's a Dom who knows how to bring a sub both pleasure and pain. Be still, my beating heart. Devon is heavy handed with Shan, which just rubs her the wrong way. Their interaction is amusing and when I was in my early 20's, I would have responded in exactly the same manner. In my late 30's now, I'd just melt at Devon's feet and submit. Shan is a challenge for Devon who is used to women throwing themselves at his feet. Her snarky retorts are cutting and make me laugh. Devon's inability to bend Shan to his will only generates more amusement for me.

The reason why I didn't rate this five star even though I really liked this story is because there were a couple of items that bothered me. The main item that threw me was the usage of Chinese words in a Romanization form. I couldn't figure out exactly what those words were. The ones I did figure out didn't exactly make sense in the story. Close, but not quite the correct intent I believe Ms. Mayburn wanted. I think most people will be fine with this as they don't read or understand Chinese. I recommend Ms. Mayburn work with someone who is literate in the language she chose to use in her next story.

The other reason was the story didn't seem as tightly written as some of her other books that I've read. The cornucopia of gods used in this story was at times hard to follow. There were so many different gods from different cultures mentioned, it caused confusion. I recommend fewer pantheons intermixed in each story in the series. It causes confusion for those who haven't studied mythology across all cultures.

Still, there are many things I loved about this book. The sexy scenes in this book are enhanced with tasty kinkiness. The BDSM is what I'd classify as SugarKink. Ms. Mayburn does SugarKink so well. Each scene had me hot and bothered, wanting more. The smexy scenes entwined with learning about Shan's past make it an enjoyable read. As we learn more about Shan, I felt a bit sick to my stomach. I guessed about her birth parents and the conclusion to this story. I wasn't sure how we would get to the ending, but I saw no way out from my anticipated conclusion. I am sad to say, I was correct with my guess. Ms. Mayburn writes great endings where not everything is perfect. I like this about her stories. There is heartache and not all villains are evil to the core. I recommend this story to kinky reader who enjoy paranormal to their romance.(less)

This is the second, if you don't count the novella, in Mayburn's Chosen by the Gods series. I do declare, the stories in this series just keep getting better and better. Additionally, each one is a true stand alone story; you needn't read the others first, you just won't recognize the characters if you read them out of order.
