Fly fishing season proves deadly in this new RM Outdoor Adventure
Fly fishing is dangerous? River ranger Mandy Tanner had no idea until days before a huge tournament in Salida, Colorado. True, the Arkansas River can be a man-eater, but the rapids weren’t responsible for driving a hatchet into the heart of would-be competitor Howie Abbott. Was the killer upset that Howie w

A river ranger Mandy Tanner was doing her job (mostly cleaning campsite after tourists) when she found a dead body - a local fisherman killed with an axe and sprayed with pepper gas for good measure. This happened right before the international fishing tournament for which the dead man was one of the most likely candidates to win. This also happened not to be the last dead body Mandy found.

In Wicked Eddies, the second title in Beth Groundwater's RM Outdoor Adventures series we again find Mandy, Rob, and their various cohorts, employees and employers embroiled in the thick of a mystery as murder once again hits Salida, Colorado. In this case, it is one of the town's fly fishing aficionados, who just happens to be the uncle of Mandy's bartending friend Cynthia. I actually felt this book was a bit better than the first book in the series. Again the author had done her homework on the...more

First of all, I have to mention that Beth Groundwater has a great sense of humor. I know this because one of the characters in her book tells blonde jokes. Since Beth Groundwater just happens to be a drop-dead-gorgeous blonde herself, and since blonde jokes are usually NOT flattering to blondes, I appreciate her being such a good sport in passing these jokes along to her readers, because darn it, some of those jokes are hilarious. I also want to mention up front that Groundwater really knows how...more
Salida Colorado is getting ready for its annual fly fishing tournament. The river rangers are checking all the spots up and down the mighty Arkansas River making sure everything is ready for the participants. Mandy thinks it should be a busy weekend but it shouldn't be too dangerous. Then she finds the dead body, would-be competitor Howie Abbott and it wasn't a fish that drove that hatchet through his neck.
As Mandy searches for clues she finds out Howie Abbott is Cynthia's uncle and her least fa...more

fast read - a little mystery and a little romance

A shiny black raven shot a raucous caw toward the blue whitewater raft that nudged its nose into the Arkansas River bank. Disturbed, the bird flapped its wide wings and swooped to another large peachleaf willow farther downstream, where it scolded the two interlopers in the raft. Ignoring the Native American’s keeper of secrets, Mandy Tanner stowed her bow paddle and stepped out onto the muddy bank. She planted a sandaled foot agai...more

Beth Groundwater's knows her stuff when it comes to describing Colorado and the outdoor activities that take place there. In this book she covers not only whitewater rafting but also fly fishing and there is a hint that soon there will be a story about winter events.
Mandy and Rob are partners in a small business with Mandy also a river ranger. When a local man is killed, then his niece is found floating in the river, then another man goes missing, Mandy gets heavily involved in the whole mess. H...more

I think I enjoyed the second Mandy Tanner mystery even more than I did the first. As a character, Mandy is developing nicely, and in this installment she copes with some seriously tough subjects. What impressed me was the clever way she put the clues together in the end to nail the killer—clues that even the police didn’t pick up on. This is exactly the kind of mystery that I love to hunker down with, and I hated to see it end. As a bonus, author Beth Groundwater adds a delightful teaser in the...more
Having already dealt with the death of a rafter in Deadly Currents during her first season as river ranger along the Arkansas River in Colorado, Mandy Tanner finds that the season will not conclude quietly for her. While picking up litter ashore, Mandy finds Howie Abbott axed to death a la Lizzie Borden! With the annual fly fishing tournament fast approaching, Howie had a reputation for cheating in this cutthroat sport. However, when Mandy later finds the body of his teenage niece in the river,...more

This is the second installment in the RM Adventures series featuring river ranger Mandy Tanner, and I think it's significantly better than the first book. I can get a better feel for the recurring characters this time out, and the relationship tensions threaded throughout the story seem less manufactured. Though I hope that I'm wrong that Beth seems to be setting up for a relationship crisis in a future book. Then again, it would be totally realistic, so it's just my personal squ...more

The second outing in the outdoor adventure series featuring River Range and outdoor guide Mandy Tanner. A fly fishing contest with a $10K prize attracts entrants from around the world. It also leads to murder and the death of a young girl struggling to fit in after the move to a new state. A touch of romance and some clever twists make for an engaging read.
I find the characters a little rude. This series would appeal more to the 20 and 30 somethings rather than older mystery fans. This series is more of a mystery rather than a cozy which may be why it appeals to me less than other series. This particular title deals with disturbing subject matter. However, the plot is very well crafted.
I was the first few chapters into the book, and had to go to work. At one point I found myself reviewing movies in my head--thinking of the images and such. There was one movie I couldn't remember the name of. I could see the setting, and so on... and then I realized it was Beth Groundwater's book. It wasn't a movie at all. I understood, then, how descriptive her writing is. The plot and characters are just as wonderful! A very good read. I look forward to reading more of her work.
I think I liked this one better than the first. I always enjoy figuring out the "whodunnit" before the sleuth, but not so far ahead of them that finishing to book seems like a waste of time.
I really enjoyed Mandy's growth as a person as well as her growing relationship with Rob and the other characters.
