The Complete Lockpick Pornography
by
Joey Comeau (Goodreads Author)
Combining two stories into one volume, this collection explores the effects of prejudice and the ramifications of violence with a slightly unhinged sense of humor and unexpected tenderness. Lockpick Pornography, originally published in 2005, is a gender-queer adventure story that was not widely available until now. We All Got It Coming presents the experiences of a young c

This book had me at "genderqueer terrorism." Insurrectionary queer literature? Yes, please.
I enjoy Comeau's irreverent writing style, which tends to tackle deep issues (like gender identity or hate crimes, for example) with levity. His humor doesn't blunt the sharper edges of his writing, however. This book and its two protagonists are complicated; there are no innocent victims, no easy victories, and no real moral at the end. As an exploration of violence and its effects, the way that people ar...more

I hadn't read the two books when they were two books, and I'm glad I read 'em together because they complement each other well.
Both are violent, sexually-charged, and deal with identity, queerness, and social norms. In "Lockpick Pornography," we have very angry characters, who do very terrible (and hilarious) things to lash out against the ideals society sells. It's totally graphic and at times bloody but in a really enjoyable way.

Comeau has become a favourite of late (check out his brilliantly strange One Bloody Thing After Another), and Lockpick Pornography continues along the same lines, delivering a pair of weird, odd, funny, and very original takes on homosexuality, relationships, thefts, public sex, abuse, vigilantism, kidnappings, and more. I wouldn't call the two novellas burdened with plot; these are shaggy, rambling tales that charm the reader even as their wincing at some of the graphic descriptions (the title...more
I thought the combination of the two stories into one book was a good idea because in a way they are almost two sides of the same story.
One is from the perspective of a man that thinks monogamy is disgusting, and the second is from a man who would want nothing more than to stay in his lovely monogamous relationship with his boyfriend.
I don't think either story could have stood as well on its own. They complimented each other very well though.

You had me at "gender-queer terrorism" and "kidnapping the children of family-values advocates." These two books went well into one volume, and are a very accessible examination of violence in the queer community, as well as prejudice, lock picking, love and a rather lot of sex.
I appreciate this book because of its honesty, and the way it is violent without being unkind. Even when the characters are kind of crazed at points, each act of violence comes with its own weight. Characters commit vigilante crimes and then ask themselves if they did the right thing, and because this is an honest book, there isn't always an answer.

I found We All Got it Coming to be the stronger of the two stories. Comeau references moments in The Muppet Show, Calvin and Hobbes and Peanuts where the comical storylines are interrupted with moments of raw, beautiful sadness... That is how I feel about Comeau's writing itself. Left a lump in my throat.
I read it. It's pretty fucking gay. By that, I mean I liked it. Also, homosexuality is the main theme in both stories.

I haven't read this yet, but based on Joey's other works, I already love it. Also if he wanted to become my friend, I would probably be ok with it???
