A short story of regrets, doubts, and learning to play the cards dealt to you in life.
My initial thoughts was that this story reminded me of the movie Where the Heart Is, although maybe not quite as dramatic. April gets pregnant at 17 by her high school boyfriend Ryan. When her mom finds out she starts planning their wedding immediately, but that day never comes because her mother has less than 2 months to live.
Taking a stroll down memory lane 10 years later, April look More...

This is a little short story that is very well written by Kristin Hannah (but anything Kristin Hannah writes is worth the read in my opinion - I AM obviously A HUGE FAN!).
Those who have lost a parent will be able to relate instantly to this story, as I did. It's just a heart-warming story with real characters and believable content. Definitely worth the time to read this! (plus it is a free download on kindle through amazon right now).

This is written in usual Kristin Hannah prose; drawing pictures with her words and linking to real emotions. It's a short story so the expectation of much depth is not of the greatest importance. What the story is really about is love of a child, exploration of the love of a mother, enduring love of a tired but solid marriage, and of satisfaction. The glass case is the figurative case the protagonist keeps her mother's memory. The memory of her mother's encouragement, love, and disappointment. W

I almost didn't finish this story because of how cliche the opening was. This is my first reading of Kristin Hannah (who is quite popular) so I hope her strong use of stereotypes was due only to this being a short work (meaning she needed to establish characterization very quickly). That's not a great reason for so much telling instead of showing, but a reason nonetheless.
Anyway, there were glimpses of great writing in there -- enough to keep me going. And once things actually starte More...

the glass case, a short story by kristin hannah
this story reminded me of a time when my daughter was 4 years old and though only traveling to school one day she did not return home once. this story is about how a girl that is 17 becomes pregnant and her boyfriend marries her. a few months later her mother dies and before she does she tells the daughter, all she wanted to do was to be able to hold the childs hand.

As 17 year old April Palmer stood at her mother's death bed she never imagined that her mother would ever meet the son she was carrying at the time.
This story, while it is fiction, I feel could be and does sometimes, happen in life. The ties that bind people together is not broken by death. This short story is inspirational and makes you want to believe that when bad things happen someone on the other side has your back.
This story is being offered free on Barnes and No More...

I was bawling by the end of this short story. I’m not a mother but I am a wife and a daughter. In fact I am a daughter who watched my mother battle cancer not once but twice, the first time when I was nine years old and the second when I was 23, her diagnosis with in weeks of my marriage. I remember going with her for treatments and sitting in the waiting room thinking “what if this doesn’t work? What if we lose her this time? What if she never meets my children?”

The Glass Case: A Short Story is about motherhood, love, loss, and life. It is a reflection by the main character, April, on her own mother's life and passing last wishes. April's life has turned out different than her mother had expected. This story shares the hardships she faces in the choices she has made. April is confronted with the fact that her glass case has shattered and she now has to find a way to put the pieces of it back together and be whole again.

April feels like she did not live up to her mother's expectations. She got pregnant as a teen and while pregnant her mother passed away. Her Mother always made it seem like she should leave the town she grew up in and go out into the world. April feels like she disappointed her Mom by marrying her high school sweetheart and staying in the town she grew up in. Then her child does not get on the bus after school. They search the town...April and her husband are pretty scared by this event.

I love Kristin Hannah's writing - I was immediately sucked in and for a short story there was much to think about. If you have kids, or have lost your mom, you may b̶e̶ ̶s̶o̶b̶b̶i̶n̶g̶ have tears in your eyes by the end ๏̯͡๏
Since I'm terrible at writing reviews about what the book is actually about, here is a great review from another goodreads member that, I think, sums it up: (spoiler alert) http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/245...

A short story about doubt and regret. April is a mother of three, married to her high-school sweetheart. Although she is happy, she can't stop feeling guilty that she didn't live up to her mother's expectations.
When her youngest son goes missing while on his way home from school.. She starts asking herself if she really is happy and satisfied with the life she choose. And has a mental conversation with the mom she lost to cancer years ago.

I've read a couple of Kristin Hannah's novels, and counting this short story, she's yet to disappoint. The Glass Case is a very touching story that is fully-packed with valuable lessons. It's about being a daughter, a mother, a wife. It's about regrets and what ifs. It's about how our connections with our loved ones aren't really severed by death. It's about being content and happy, knowing that you love and are loved in return.

I'd never read any Kristin Hannah and thought this short story (available free for Kindles) would be a good way to give her a try. Impressed! She packs a lot into this little story -- a page-turner situation, meaningful lessons, and characters I cared about. The writing was pitch perfect for a short story. I don't want to spoil any part of it for readers, so I'll just end by saying I'd definitely recommend it.

WOW! Surprisingly good for a short story. And one that was randomly (in that I just stumbled upon it and have never read this author before) free Kindle release on 11/11/11! Over the course of the small pages I highlighted AND teared up! :O I will definitely have to make a note to do a little research and pick up on of Kristin Hannah's books in the future!

April gets pregnant during her senior year and her mom who wanted so much for her dies. flash forward 10years and she has 3 kids and a husband who works at Walmart. When her youngest son doesn't get off the bus and can't be found, she prays that her mom will look after him.
As usual an emotional tearjerker Kristen Hannah is wwell-known for.

I thought it was a great story. Makes you sit back and think about the material things we stress over or all the "I wish I had this" and realize we take so much for granted. We all need to remember to sit back and appreciate what we do have, especially our family and cherish every moment because you NEVER know when you time is up.

A 2.5 stars would be a fair rating. This was the first I've ever read anything by Kristin Hannah. I liked her writing style and I really like the story at the beginning, but then I saw where it was going and she lost me. I don't want to give away the ending, but it was a tad too much of a made for tv movie type story.

This was a cute story of April and her relationship with her mother prior to her death and her relationship with boyfriend turned husband Ryan and what happens when her son doesn’t come home from school. It was cute although I wish it was longer at only 38 pages and most of that was the promotion for her next book.

Hannah always has really good emotional stories. There are 2 short stories in this book. The 1st was very emotional for me having kids and the same fears. The 2nd I felt the ending just left you hanging and wondering. However for short stories of only about 15 pages each they pack a powerful punch.

The Glass Case is a short read by Kristin Hannah. I've read several of her longer novels, but never a novella by her. It was good, but I wished it was developed into a longer story. I would've liked to get to know the characters better. Overall, it was ok. And a free download on Amazon right now. Can't beat that.

A short story free on Kindle, but so worth it! Not even gonna tell about the story but to say you must read it!! For anyone not familiar with this author this would be a great way to get to know her good writing. Brought tears to my eyes and chills up and down my arms!!

Although this book is only 32 pages long, it tore at my heart strings. It's possible that it touched my heart even more since the little boy was 6 years and named Bradley. I am still in awe that such a short book could evoke such emotion and make me cry :)

What a wonderful story. Just when you think you know what the story entails it completely throws you. Life is not always as perfect and happy as it seems but in the end your happiness is the most important. Highly recommend to reading this.

We often let reqret rule our lives. The Glass Case is a touching story of realizing what is most important to you; Kristin Hannah gets to the innermost feelings of her main character and leaves you thinking about your own life and priorities.

Much thanks to Kristin Hannah for offering this short story to us for free! I really enjoyed it. So far I have liked everything that I have read by Kristin. I am looking forward to reading more by her including her new one Home Front!

This is a short story about something any parent could face. The author did a very good job in writing this book. I just felt she lever somethings out that could of either extended the story or made it just a little better. The ending felt lacking.

I wasn't expecting the story to be quite so short!! I enjoyed it though, but I guess as it says in the title it's just a short story. I didn't feel like it went into too much depth and ended rather abruptly. Not really my cup of tea.

It was okay. I liked the story as a whole, but I found April annoying and the writing too "this is obviously a short story I'm writing" so the telling was too much for me. But I definitely won't judge Hannah's writing by this.
