Oh, to be a ballerina! It's a challenge for any little girl, but even more so if you happen to be a vampire like Vampirina. First of all, you have to find a class that meets at night. Then you have to figure out how to perfect your form when you can't see yourself in the mirror? And then there's wearing pink (not the most flattering of colors if you happen to be undead) an...more

Vampirina dreams of becoming a dancer. She hangs posters of dancers over her coffin and her headstone is complete with quotes about dancing. She spends so much of her time dancing around the house that her mother and father decide it’s time to start taking her to classes. They find an evening class and send Vampirina on her way, but dancing is more difficult than she expected. She has to work hard to learn her steps so she’ll be ready fo...more

Cute, Cute, Cute! That’s what this book is. It’s full of practical advice for any young vampire looking to become a ballerina.
This gorgeous book takes black, white, and pink illustrations and adds irresistible sparkles to make the drawings complete. Everything has a cool vintage feel about it. The illustrations remind me a lot of Mary Blair. I couldn’t help but be charmed by this sweet story of a girl who is a little bit different but still dreams of being a ballerina.

I will freely admit to glimpsing the title and doing an eyeroll of the cynical sort. I am not the reader who embraces all things princess, pink, ballerina or sparkly. I usually can't stand such books that convince girls to assume the "girly" mantle. Oh, but this THIS is a marvelous book.
The text explains in matter-of-fact encouraging language how a little vampire might become a ballerina. But it's the pictures that win the day. LeUyen Pham manages to channel shades of the Addams' Family and comb...more

Vampirina Ballerina reminds me of one of my favorite quotes, only reversed. The quote is, "When I was younger most girls wanted to be a ballerina, I wanted to be a vampire." Instead of that, it's about a vampire who wants to become a ballerina. Vampirina tries and tries to become a ballerina but she just can't seem to fit in. After a lot of practice, she finally makes some friends and becomes a great ballerina. This book also has a great lesson for children. If you put enough effort into it, you...more
A little girl, who happens to be a vampire, decides to take ballet lessons. Dressed in a black leotard with her beautiful grey wings, she's surrounded by girls in pink. After a few missteps, she is ready for the big show, which is presented in a full 4 page fold out spread.
A charming and fun ballet story that hits just the right note between being a dance book and being a sweet vampire story. Yes, the story hits pretty much every vampire cliche -- turning into bats, invisible in a mirror -- but...more

Vampirina is like any young girl who dreams of becoming a graceful ballerina, except for her fangs. With the help of her Munster-like family, she practices her pliés to prepare for the big recital, where she will earn the respect of her human peers, despite the difference in her appearance. The narration of this picture book plays like a 1950’s instructional video while the gothic font dances around the nostalgic watercolor illustrations. This is a great read for any child who longs to achieve a...more
An adorable twist on the typical ballerina-type story. Full of references to traditional vampire lore, ballet and literature this story will hold the interest of children and adults alike. This one isn't just about being a pretty-pretty ballerina. It has a great message about sticking with your goals and working hard.
Here's my favorite quote: "At the end of the dance, the music will fade. The audience will applaud and shout, 'Brava!' Take a well earned bow, for you will have become that rarest...more

Angelina Ballerina with fangs. A fairly typical "try, try, and try again, you will succeed story!" story, Pace mixes it up with our monster main characters. The narrative is very simple, and the book is obviously intended for younger children or perhaps even storytime. I do wish that Pace had used some sort of rhyme scheme, it would have added a nice flow to the story. Regardless, Vampirina Ballerina is a charming little read, and I highly recommend for any up and coming prima donnas or Hallowee...more
Charming book that goes well beyond the concept of a vampire child becoming a ballerina (though this IS the focus of the book). The gorgeous cover art is done in black and pink. . .and sparkles. . .wait. . .this is a vampire book? With monsters throughout?
Vampirina wants to take ballet lessons. But staying on point can be difficult when one cannot control when they might go back to their bat form. But this won't keep our plucky little Vampirina from the big recital.

Cute, cute & more cute. Did I say that this book was cute? I loved the story of a little vampire wanting to be a ballerina. So sweet and the story illustrations are very glamorous and vintage looking. I loved this book. I wish I could buy this for my niece. She is way past the age of storytime reading (she's 10). Anyone with aspirations of being a ballerina (maybe a vampire) should read this book. Great read.
I LOVE the illustrations. They made me laugh out loud more than once. The text isn't really a story. It's hints on how to become a ballerina. But the characters are so expressive and dynamic that you can see the story unfolding visually as you read about how to become a dancer. Our young vampirina's enthusiasm is delightful, as is the encouragement from her slightly scary looking but loving family.
Very cute, and I like that it's a story about an oddball who gains friends gradually, though working together, and not a story about how you should be nice to weirdos because they're useful (the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer school). And of course Pham's illustrations are gorgeous.
"And even though it would make your grand jete most impressive, resist the temptation to turn into a bat."

What a fun twist to the typical overdone ballerina story! A young vampire girl dreams ballerina diurnal dreams, but how to get started? Finding a ballet school that has night classes is a great place to start. I loved how the author showed all the practice that this young vampire girl had to do to obtain her goal. Practice makes perfect isn't a saying for nothing. :)
This story is about a young vampire trying to learn ballet. I liked how the characters were drawn. I thought the story itself showed perseverance can get you to a better place. I also liked how the family was shown supporting the young vampire. I gave this book 5/5 stars. I think any child who likes ballet or even vampires will enjoy this fun story.
"If you are going to be a ballerina, you have to do more than wear a tutu and dream about dancing."
Charming illustrations and thoughtful text outline sound advice for young vampires who aspire to dance--and anyone who has ever dared to reach for the stars.
"Even without wings, you can leap higher than you think."

Vampirina joins an evening ballet class. The picture book does a good job of showing how much work needs to be put into a ballet class and how difficult just getting started is. It also has the added drama of Vampirina's vampire difficulties. I loved the illustrations I thought they were a good mix of campy and cute.

I picked this up because the illustrations were by LeUyen Pham, whose work I adore. And they are absolutely delightful. I didn't enjoy the story as much, but I'm sure this would be a huge hit with little girls who love tutus and dancing and all things pink but still want a little bit of scary from time to time.
Vampirina wants to be a ballerina. This delightful picture book gives her important advice on how to fit in with the other ballerinas and do well. I love the illustrations for this book. Vampirina is delightful with her cape and turning into a bat whenever she gets excited or embarrassed. Lovely and fun.
Love the premise and the illustrations, but was not so crazy about the story. The narration felt awkward and distant, lacking the charm I was expecting. Worth following the illustrations as LeUyen Pham is as enjoyable as ever, that Vampirina Ballerina and family sure are super cute.
What a cute cautionary tale! This picture book is written as advice given directly to a young vampiress who wants to be a ballerina. A fun mix of advice that's good for everyone ("Once class begins, keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth closed.") and that's really good only for vampires ("The sight of your fangs might make the other dancers forget fifth position."). Clever and funny ("Always get a good day's sleep."), this picture book also imparts the wisdom that becoming anything wonderf...more

"The road to ballerinadom can be bumpy...[but] resist the temptation to turn into a bat." Madame Sang joins Brontorina's Madame Lucille in the front ranks of unflappable ballet grandes dames. Actual good advice for aspiring ballerinas, with lots of fun details to look for in the illustrations (and in the text..."sang" is French for "blood," after all, and that Auden quote on her headstone is legit).
