I actually won this and 'Headache' in a contest. I wanted to win these books because I wanted to share my love of reading with my grandson Derek (age7). I received them and promptly went to the post office to send them off to my grandson (envelope addressed to him to add to the excitement). This was a fun and very cute story about a very sweet young boy who loves his sweets! At least until he eats so many he gets a Bellyache, falls asleep and ends up in a fantasy world where the 'people' are sweets. He learns a bit about being different, prejudices and consequences for his actions.

Bellyache is going to be a great read-aloud for my students this fall. This is Crystal Marcos's first book and it brings out the child in all of us. Her main character, Peter, is modeled around any normal child/adult wanting more than is allowed, yet managing to go beyond those rules and take what is wanted anyway he can. My feelings about this book were up and down quite a bit as I read. I tried to leave a little wiggle room as I understand it's geared towards a younger audience then I normally read, but I still found many parts lacking a little pizzazz.

A wonderful children's story!
I originally purchased the Kindle edition of this book for my "special needs" son. We have been reading it almost every night and we've truly enjoyed it. I also purchased a couple of paperback editions for Christmas gifts (last month) to my younger grandchildren as well. We all found BELLYACHE to be a very creative and fun story. Bellyache is a charming story with fascinating characters, imaginative landscapes, and witty dialog. The hero of the story, Peter, is an ordinary kid swept up in extraordinary events. The tale showcases acceptance, tolerance, bravery, persistence, forgiveness, and faith, but manages to avoid the often-times treacle-drenched parlance of contemporary kids’ literature.

I pre-read this book before giving it to my 10 year old granddaughter. I found the book to be witty, with nicely developed characters and plot. A true adventure tale (along the lines of the Wizard of Oz) for young readers with just the right vocabulary level as well. A fun read.
My only criticism, albeit minor, is that I thought the age range of the book should be more like 8 to 10, as I felt it was a little too young in content for the new sophisticated 12 yea...more

I loved this book! Crystal Marcos has written a real winner! The pages come alive and the characters become your friends (at least some of them)! Bellyache is a wonderful book for ages 7 and up. The imagery will capture children's hearts and imaginations, and they will come to love Peter and Lina. They will also enjoy and benefit from the message of forgiveness that is conveyed. How would you like to have a job working in a sweets shop? For Peter Fischer it is a dream come true. At 10 years old he feels he is now too old for a babysitter. Whew! I am relieved that I really enjoyed this book. I did buy a copy, but I’ve gotten to know the author here at Goodreads and I would have felt very badly if I hadn’t liked this at least 3 stars worth.

To me, the writing was just okay, even for a kid's book, and with peppermint cats and marshmallow birds, etc., it really should have included illustrations. I think the premise has lots of potential, though, and the book would be better if it were edited down--too much unnecessary "telling" that detracted from my overall enjoyment. I did like the quickened pace toward the end, however, and I could see kids getting excited about it if they could stick with the reading long enough to get there.
"Bellyache" is a delightful book that kept me turning pages to see what happened next. I found surprises in every chapter! The descriptions took me into the settings and helped me feel like the characters were real (even those who are not human). The lessons are gently presented but powerful. I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Bellyache" and highly recommend it for anyone who loves to have their imagination sparked.
A delicious tale, that may have induced a major sweet craving. We follow Peter as he helps out in his Papa's sweet shop. Like any kid, Peter can't help but sneek a few extra treats behind his Papa's back. However, Peter quickly learns about dishonesty and the consequences that it can have not only on your tummy but your friends and family.

Fantastic book. Very addictive and enjoyable the whole way through. I think I enjoyed it as much as my kids! This book could defiantly stand next to the classics such as Roald Dahl and JK Rowling. If you're still having doubts then I would suggest you check out the preview (e.g. at Amazon) because I guarantee you will be hooked :)

Bellyache is a super cute story and right away children can relate to Peter who's Papa owns a sweet shop and what would any kid do but keep eating candy not thinking my Belly is going to hurt. I thought this book as a mom gives a cute story behind a great lesson. The adventure Peter goes on takes your imagination on a sticky sweet ride.
‘Bellyache, A Delicious Tale’ by Crystal Marcos is a really fun and imaginative children’s book. Oh my, this is a WONDERFULLY delicious book!! I love Roald Dahl's work, and this is very similar to his style.
The creativity of the whole adventure is brilliant!!! And the level of writing is perfect for younger readers - and still enjoyable for older ones :D
... I have a warning though: you must have snacks close at hand when reading this, it WILL make you hungry.

I adore this cover....
I received Bellyache(from Goodreads First reads) around Christmas time, so I decided the best way to test this book out was to take it with me home and read it to the children in the family. This book mesmerized my nieces, nephews, and other young relatives ages 6 to 12. The plot was easy to follow yet skillfully developed, and the characters were interesting and endearing. A lesson on forgiveness delivered beautifully.
The 5 star rating is from my boys. They loved the book! It was the perfect bedtime read aloud. A quirky, creative story about living in a candy land and at the same time instilled good moral values. Every night when we finished reading a chapter, the boys would yell "NO!!!! Please read one more!" You have to love that! :-) We are excited to read Headache - the sequel.
This is a wonderful tale full of adventure in a magical world. The author has paid great attention to detail as the reader goes on a delicious journey from the beginning to the end. Excellent!
