Sky Dragons (Pern (Publication Order) #24)
From the New York Times bestselling mother-and-son team of Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey comes the final installment in the riveting Pern saga that began with Todd’s solo novel, Dragonsblood. Now, with all of Pern imperiled by the aftereffects of a plague that killed scores of dragons and left the planet helpless against the fall of deadly Thread, the only hope for the...more

This book was hard to follow with all the various names that are similar. I also didn't feel connected to any of the characters, which is very different from the rest of the series, where I always became attached to certain key characters. It took many chapters before I started to feel like I knew the characters enough to properly enjoy the book.

Sky Dragons is the latest installment in the Pern Series and the last book which will feel the touch of Anne MacCaffrey herself. This is a sad end to the great work which Anne McCaffrey has given us through the years, and I think that a lot, if not all, of the blame has to be placed at the feet of Todd. I have tried to keep an open mind to their collaborations in the last few years, and Todd's solo efforts, but things seemed to have gotten steadily worse.
But, where to begin ...

Someone is going to bash me for this one so if you're not conservative, probably better just move on to another review.
Ugh. I have been a long time fan of Anne McCaffery. I stumbled upon Dragonsinger years and years ago and was hooked. I hate to say anything negative, especially as she died in the last year, but I just can't give this book a good review. I've felt like her books have really gone downhill in the last decade, and her's books with her son Todd and/or his books are just not that gre...more

This release is a sad one. "Sky Dragons" is the last Pern novel Anne McCaffery will ever work on, and it is unknown at this point if her children (Todd notably has several solo novels published in Pern) will continue the 45 year old best selling series.
That said, I'll go on record as saying this last is certainly not the best. This "grouping" of novels, co-written with her son, Todd who started this set with his solo "Dragongirl". It revolves around time travel, and this feels to have wound up...more

It had been a few years since I had read a Pern series book, but I had always found that even if I was jumping into the series, I could easily find my way-- there was usually some kind of recap that would bring me up to speed with the various events and characters leading into a story.
That was not the case with Sky Dragons. I was so lost for a lot of the book, feeling like the characters were having secret conversations and not letting me in on it or other characters or events were mentioned as...more

It is better sweet to turn the last page of An Anne Mccaffrey book, knowing that this is the last book she put her hands on and approved. I have read all her books, and #24 is no different then the first, with tears streaming down your face as you feel the ebb and pull of the events that occur with in the pages, wishing the characters could live forever. Greiving for a friend lost as those characters do mourn their losses. My only hope is with out the inspiration and detailed attention of Anne M...more
Sky Dragons by Todd & Anne McCaffrey
This is a tale of dragons from Pern, the home of Anne McCaffrey’s dragonesque imagination. Plague has decimated the dragons of Pern and their riders to the point where there is an insufficient defense against Thread. This book details how a small band of courageous dragon riders preservers.
I don’t know if I own every book that Anne McCaffrey authored but if I don’t it isn’t for lack of trying. I am a major dragon fan and some of my all time favorite drago...more

I have lots of confusing feelings about this book. Here goes in no particular order.
I found it very difficult to remember who all the characters were from previous books and hence had trouble caring about some of the characters.
I'm not sure how realistic it was but fair play to Todd and Anne for portraying a lesbian relationship and broadening the dragon choices to include more women. In fact women form the majority of the main characters in this book.

I was very surprised by this book. The Todd Mccaffrey series' have been somewhat slow, but this one was not. I enjoyed the self-contained isolation of this book. Although it connects with the larger series, I was able to enjoy it almost as a stand alone novel.
I was also impressed with the fact that one of the main characters was at least a bisexual and at most a lesbian. For Pern, that seems cutting edge and very liberal. There have always been references to the blue and green dragon rider men...more

I feel like I grew up with this series as my daughter grew up with the Harry Potter series. I had already heard about the passing of Anne McCaffrey before this book was released, and reading the forward written by her son Todd brought it home to me again. I needed tissues before I even started the story! I will always have a soft spot in my heart for this series, and I will keep reading any Pern stories that Todd McCaffrey continues with. Because if I think I grew up with the Dragons of Pern, To...more
I enjoyed it because I love the whole Pern series. And unlike some other reviewers I've seen, I've liked the books Todd McCaffrey has written in his mother's world. This one is a collaboration between Anne & Todd, and is Anne last as she died before the book was finished. I will miss her.
(It must have been hard for Todd to finish writing while grieving his mother's death.)
"Sky Dragons" not one of the best in the series, but I did enjoy it. I would say don't start the series with this book;...more

I think that Goodreads should give you a negative option when rating books- minus one star would be perfect for this book. Todd McCaffrey has completely ruined Pern. I am a huge fan of Anne McCaffrey's Pern books, but Todd needs to put this pass out of its misery and go do something else. One indicator for me that a book will be bad is when it is a new book in a popular series with a huge following, and the book is actually sitting on the shelf at the library, instead of on hold for three months...more
I received this book from Netgalley (an uncorrected proof)
At the end of Dragon’s Time the plague and sickness are over but there are few dragons and riders left, Sky Dragon’s starts where that one left off, sort of, at first it is a little off putting because they don’t tell the story of how they came to be where they are till later.
For the main part of the book we have some familiar folks, and some new faces but I do believe Todd & Anne have set us up for a new story arc that I am sure Todd...more

All of Anne's books, even if they form a trilogy, can be read alone and not much gets lost. Each of her books are their own story. Sadly, that is not the case with this one. I felt like I picked up a book that the first few chapters ripped out which left me lost and always a little behind. There were a lot of different people that popped in and out with very little warning and despite there being a ton of dialogue, they really didn't talk about what was going on very much. It was hard to get in...more
The ending to the storyline of the second interval and third pass of the red star on Pern...and the last novel written by the inestimable Anne McCaffrey before her passing last year. Xhinna's story is finally told, while the previous main characters take a back seat. I did enjoy this story very much, although I got a little confused (as were some of the characters in the story) by all of the "timing" going on in the storyline. The characters and the difficulties they encounter while hiding out i...more
Having read earlier books in this series with great enjoyment in my twenties, I was a little disappointed with this one. How tastes change! The book really needs to be read as part of the series. I have missed out on several of the series and it took me a few chapters to pick up the thread of the story. There are large numbers of characters and dragons and several times I was confused about who was who. The book continues the story of the fight for survival on Pern, but the main theme is the rel...more
Sky Dragons: Dragonriders of Pern takes place after the plague has annihilated most the dragons and riders. This is the story how the remaining dragons and riders survive and rebuild.
This being my first book in this series, I was unfamiliar with all the past characters. Even though I was unfamiliar, I was still able to follow the story rather easily. The authors did a fabulous job giving just enough information to enlighten what I missed but not to bog down the story with details of the past.

I disagree with some reviews that Todd McCaffrey does not write as well as him Mom. It is with a heavy heart that I finished this book, kIfnowing that it is the last one that Anne will directly influence. I am so sorry that she has passed into the next life. Hopefully she is honing her skills, by telling stories to God.
Meanwhile, I enjoyed this book so much. It kept me so entertained that I had a dream or two about dragons. If you haven't read any of the Anne McCaffrey Pern Series, and you do ap...more

Eagerly waited for the next book from Pern. When I cracked the cover I read that Anne McCaffrey had died. In past books it she had the better flow of story and character development over Todd. I'm happy that he'll continue the series, but he just doesn't have the same connection and ability to speak for the characters.
What I've noticed most about this series is that the books don't really stand alone. In Anne's other books set in Pern, I could pick up any book without feeling lost or that major...more

Nice to have all the dangling threads of the previous books tied up fairly well, although I was finding it hard to keep track of all the new characters. The perspective in this book shifted from Fiona (main perspective of the past three) to her friend and slightly minor character Xhinna, who turns out to be quite a bit more than she appears at first. The last book ended with a clever way to force the characters to solve their problems without much time travel, allowing events to proceed in fairl...more
Came upon this one just in time for my birthday. It was marginally better than the last few entries, perhaps due to Anne McCaffrey's contributions, but still a lackluster effort for the last Pern novel. There are too many characters with similar names and not enough personality to distinguish them from one another. Also, not enough dragons! Kindan finally impresses, and his dragon is barely mentioned. Last, how are the dragons going out in space with unprotected riders when, in "All the Weyrs of...more
so disappointing. I was tempted not to finish it but I did as I wanted to know the end but not worth the effort. too many characters not enough about dragons and fighting thread.
my biggest question is that it was against tradition to have women (girls) fly dragons (other then queens) and this tradition was broken by this series of books. but in f'lar and lessa's time it was also tradition to have women only fly queens. why did things change???

I miss Anne McCaffrey. I grew up loving this series, rereading all the originals several times. I even liked the first one or two that Todd was involved in writing. They did not deal as much with the complexities of going between times, and the main characters were interested in watchwhers as much as dragons, which I found interesting. Kindan was a vivid character, and his early adventures drew me in. But Todd McCaffrey does not have his mother's deft touch for plotting, he does not draw his cha...more
I have returned to the world of Pern many times since I first discovered this series in a Young Adult literature class in college in the late 80s. The series has evolved over that time, and Todd McCaffrey's influence has modernized and influenced the series. Traditional gender roles being challenged is a theme of this chapter in the history of this fantasy world. When the genetically modified thread fighting dragons rise to mate, their psychic connections to their riders affects the humans to al...more

This is the last book Anne McCaffrey had major input on, at least according to the acknowledgements. Sadly, the book itself doesn't seem to reflect that. Her son, Todd, seems to have done most of the writing, and it shows. Not that it's bad, but it's not as good as Anne's. I hope this ends the series featuring Fiona and co. because it seems way too stretched out. I'm not sure we really even needed this book. It could probably have been combined with the previous novel.

This one took me about a week to read. I was a little bit excited because I'd heard a lot about the author, and I have read one of her books (by herself without Todd McCaffrey) in the past. I was a bit disappointed by this book. It seemed kind of--scattered. It jumps from scene to scene, sometimes too quickly, and without explaining enough. Also, please keep in mind that the only book I have read that is connected to this one is Dragonsong, so I do not know much about the entire story. I do know...more
Probably should be a 3.5. Im dismayed by the trend in the last few books showing relations between
women and very few strong men. But I understand the development of a different culture in Weyrs and Holds.
I always liked the earlier McCaffery Novels best. Sky Dragons has a very fun setting-- being in trees.
The part about dealing with tunnel snakes and Mreows is good. The timing plot is fun too. I liked the
young Jirana.

Well, whaddaya know? After I complained bitterly about the last three Pern novels, I fully expected to dislike this one as well. But I didn’t! And it wasn’t all due to sentiment generated by the fact that it’s the last Pern book that Anne herself will have a hand in.
I think I figured it out-- Fiona only makes a brief cameo in this book. Therefore, I was able to understand what was happening, and when. When Fiona did show up, near the end of the book, sure enough, things started to get confusing...more

Anne McCaffrey was born on April 1st, 1926, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at 1:30 p.m., in the hour of the Sheep, year of the Fire Tiger, sun sign Aries with Taurus rising and Leo mid-heaven (which seems to suggest an early interest in the stars).
