Originally a blog, this book is a collection of diary entries from a London call girl. Belle is a likable narrator, even if I had a hard time believing both her unshakable businesslike nature and her overall good humor.

Being a call girl never really seems to get her depressed; the men never seem ugly, or vicious, or bad in bed. I felt like she had done better as a call girl finding decent guys than most of us do dating. Which is a pretty good recommendation for becoming a call girl, I guess.

This book initially sank its claws into me during the hot sex scene at the beginning. A friend of mine kept recommending the Showtime series to me, but already having enough television addictions, I thought I'd read the book. Big mistake.

I would like to first say that I only gave this book 4 stars because of the end. I am not sure if the author had always been planning a sequel and that's why it ended the way it did but it just sort of stopped. On one had it was very much like an actual personal journal, people writing journals don't wrap up the plot before filling it up and moving on to the next one, but this also leaves the reader with very little closure. I finished and felt like, "OK that was odd".

Still reading, maybe, but now I remember why I stopped reading her blog: "the boy."

People who say "the boy" to refer to their significant other come across as a) insecure and b) not fooling anybody about the long-term prospects of that relationship. Also, they're as annoying as a toddler discovering a new word.

I must be honest and say that I only read up to page 201.
In my opinion this book is written by a transexual. I have friends that are strippers that don't go through all the make-up, shaving, and deodorant that this person does.
Maybe I would have enjoyed the book more if the author was honest and said that they were a transexual call girl, but I just can't get into a book where I feel like the author is lieing about who they actually are.

I was only going to give this book three stars, but I can't justify doing that. It was a great read. True, you can read it all for free on her blog, but the girl put herself out there, blogging about a day-to-day that is much racier and far less legal than most.

Unlike some other reviewers, I thought her tone was perfect. She came off as a bit snarky and certainly intelligent--which isn't a view we're often given of anyone who works in the sex industry.

I was originally planning to give this memoir three stars, but by the final page I couldn't justify why it didn't deserve four. I really enjoyed this. Belle is upfront honest, classy, humourous and intelligent; She has an insight to the world that you wouldn't "expect" from someone in her expertise. Any stereotype you have in mind about call girls will pretty much be banished by the time you're finished reading.

I think my main problem with this was the format. Obviously, it's an actual diary and I actually enjoy books in the diary format when they're interesting. I've never read a diary that was as all-over-the-place as this.

I love blogs. I am obsessed with blogs. I am not so sure blogs should be books.

I have read my share of blogs turned books. I didn't think this book was of that category-until I read the first two entries.

Belle de Jour: Diary of an Unlikely Call Girl had an intriguing cover. I judge books by their cover.

I liked the book, but I am having a hard time singing it's praises. I am not sure why. It's not that I am up tight about sex or prostitution. Please.

I'm completely enchanted by the series starring Billie Piper inspired by this book. However, I am a firm believer that one should read the book, no matter how loose the adaptation. I was a child in the states when the controversy swarmed in Britain about who Belle de Jour was. (I remember wanting to sit in a big cup too like in the ad for the TV show.)

The original title (or at least the British title) is Belle de Jour: The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl and that seems a bit more apt. Thankfully, it is not the kind of diary kept by those who feel the need to document every moment of their day, but rather, Belle writes down snippets -- interesting encounters, conversations, or lists that pop into her head, which are somehow related to her profession or sex in general. While she does go into detail on occasion, I honestly didn't find the sex to be particularly salacious. (Though this book was recommended to me by my very sweet and ladylike roommate, which surprised me a bit.) Perhaps it's the mark of a good sex worker that she can be both detailed and detached. One didn't feel like there was a total lack of intimacy; if anything, her enthusiasm for her work means that she's certainly in the moment, yet Belle is still an intelligent, thinking woman who can step back and assess a situation. When done for the book (and originally, her blog), this means that she can see the truly funny facts of many situations, even if you know she probably didn't laugh at the time. Belle does seem to be a consummate professional.

Quite honestly, I found her life outside of her profession to be the even more fascinating tale. After all, for Belle, prostitution is just a job... though granted, it's a job that frequently impacts her ability to go out with friends on a Saturday night... and her ability to tell the whole truth about her days at work to family or friends, but it is just a job. The thing that makes this particular tale of prostitution unique is the fact that no one is forcing Belle into some kind of sordid lifestyle, fueled by drugs and pimps. After failing to find a decent/interesting job after attending University, she needed to pay rent and almost inadvertently stumbled upon this option, thus allowing her to make a good amount of money doing something she enjoys. Quite frankly, it makes the whole scene practically appealing, particularly as this volume doesn't contain any violent or unpleasant encounters with clients (which would certainly toss in a more somber note to the diary). The worst that happens in Belle's professional life, really, is that she's given a bit of the cold shoulder by her madam after Belle takes an extended holiday and turns down a few client meetings.

So really, work is simple; it's her personal life that can be a bit complicated. Belle tends to not have female friends, but rather, she has a collection of male friends (a group of them are identified as A1, A2, and so on, then collectively referred to as the As), including particular friend, N, who is a bit of a closer friend (and a somewhat stronger personality/presence) as opposed to the As. When the diary begins, Belle also has a boyfriend (referred to as The Boy) who is aware of her chosen profession, but the relationship ends and Belle embarks upon dating (though The Boy does pop back into the narrative once in a while, as exes tend to do). It's Belle's relationships with her male friends that really make the book interesting, for most of the relationships have, at one time, had a sexual element to them. That everyone remains friends and civil is the impressive feature, but it also puts an interesting twist in the dynamics between them, particularly when Belle brings potential suitors along, as these fellows often feel a little possessive and protective of their Belle.

As far as the writing goes, Belle is smart and has an amusing perspective on her industry. It's the insider's look that most people will want and this certainly provides it, though one has to wonder if darker elements were edited out, thus allowing the book to be a sexier read, or if there really weren't any nasty encounters. Honestly, if Belle's experience of the sex industry was the norm, then the world would have much less of a problem with the industry in general, though unfortunately it's just not the case. Belle generally has respectful clients simply looking to satisfy sexual cravings and Belle enjoys sex. She gives the impression of being a generally happy person, pleased with her professional career (though aware that it is a young woman's game) yet not terribly pleased at the secrecy surrounding her life that makes her unable to share certain things with loved ones for a multitude of reasons. When considering the perspective of her friends, it's hard to find fault with her choices. Certain people can be judgmental and naturally, they can be concerned for her safety, but most of the guys in her life seem supportive and Belle herself seems quite level-headed. The book itself doesn't have much of a trajectory, but then, it is a diary. Things just kind of fizzle out and one can hardly insist that there be major plot points and revelations to produce some kind of coherent closure to the year. Reading this on my nook, I was a bit surprised at the abrupt ending, though I'm not sure what else I might demand to make it more satisfying. Some of her encounters with clients are amusing, though on the whole I found myself wishing that I had the income to support Belle's lingerie habit.

Clearly, Belle de Jour is a pseudonym and the book was originally published with the author listed as Anonymous. Originally, there was a blog (http://belledejour-uk.blogspot.com/) kept by an anonymous London call girl and that was the basis for the book. Two "further adventures" sequels were published, too (though only the second one is listed officially as memoir and the third is deemed a fiction even if it was based on real events). Showtime bought the rights and ran a series that lasted two seasons called Secret Diary of a Call Girl, starring Billie Piper. In late 2009, Dr. Brooke Magnanti came forward as the author after reportedly being threatened with exposure by an ex. At the time, people called the anonymity of the author to be one of the great literary questions of the time, with speculation rampant over who might be the real author. It was around the time that Dr. Magnanti stepped forward that I remembered hearing about the book (and, more specifically, remembered the sexy ads for the Showtime series), so I rented the series and then read this at the recommendation of my roommate. Even though the world now knows the name of the woman behind the lingerie, I still think of the writer as Belle.

Ultimately, if you think that reading a short and mildly clever take on being a London call girl is something that might interest you, I think you'll be pleased with the result. I did, however, feel like I was left wanting more and that's not quite the mark of a good call girl (after all, shouldn't she leave you feeling satisfied and, if anything, wanting a repeat performance in the future?), but there's always the sequels. Perhaps I would have been happier with the book if I hadn't seen the Showtime series first, which (obviously) provides more narrative structure and sexier visuals (though the second season features the introduction of another call girl to serve as a friend of Belle's and she's a bit annoying). Still, it was an amusing enough read, even if I was constantly reminding myself that this isn't a typical prostitution story. If nothing else, it's refreshing to see a smart woman writing about sex without an emphasis on eventually getting married and settling down. She's clearly a strong and independent person who's taken control of her life and is making decisions that might not be mainstream, but they seem to have paid off in the end. (Is it possible to use any turn of phrase in writing about prostitution without feeling the need to say "no pun intended"?) I don't feel any real need to read the sequels, but the writing is quick and smart while the book in general is fun and easy (see what I mean?).(less)

I've read some of the other reviews here on this book and I think some of them miss the Englishness of this book. The English are so loose and casual about sex. This was pretty much complete trash. Apparently they made it into a TV show!? WTF... Dear everyone, please stop making blogs into books. The only one I found even remotely entertaining was Candy Girl, and that wasn't great either.

En ce qui concerne le contenu, le style est plaisant sans être lourd. Belle nous conte son quotidien sans s’appesantir sur les moments sans intérêts. On suit ses relations, qu’elles soient amicales, amoureuses ou « professionnelles ». Ça reste assez soft dans l’ensemble même si elle nous parle parfois de certaines pratiques un peu hard, comme elle ne s’étend pas quinze plombes sur le sujet, ça passe. Il ne faut juste pas être trop frileux au niveau des perversions sexuelles parce que certaines scènes m’ont fait froncer le nez de dégoût.

Le roman porte évidemment bien son nom car il est découpé comme un journal intime, à chaque jour son anecdote. Ce qui lui donne une petite touche authentique est bien sûr le fait que Belle n’a pas toujours des millions de choses à raconter chaque jour et donc, certaines journées s’étalent sur trois pages et d’autres, sur trois lignes. La découpe plus importante du livre est faite par mois, et à chaque début de partie, un morceau de « l’abécédaire d’une call-girl » par Belle de Jour nous y attend sagement pour nous apprendre les mots importants de son univers avec une petite explication à la clé, histoire de ne pas nous perdre en cours de route.

A lire sans comparaison avec la série, l’esprit est là mais moins présent que dans cette dernière. Ce côté très glamour avec une touche d’apprentissage pour le spectateur sans jamais virer dans le glauque, est peu représenté ici. Belle ne s’embarrasse pas de choquer ou non son lecteur même si ces passages là sont rapides, elle écrit au fur et à mesure de son quotidien et le côté « apprentissage » ne se voit vraiment que dans son abécédaire. Ce sont évidemment deux médias très différents qui ne renvoient pas forcément la même image mais, à dire vrai, la série ne me venait en tête qu’au début, elle a totalement déserté mon esprit par la suite.
C’est un livre qui se lit très vite du fait de son découpage, un chapitre est assez large car il englobe un mois entier.
Par contre il ne comporte pas réellement de fin au sens propre du terme même si l’on soupçonne une certaine prise de partie pour Belle suite à sa recherche d’emploi. On peut donc en tirer quelques conclusions en lisant entre les lignes. Je ne vous en dit pas plus, à vous de découvrir tout cela maintenant !

C’est un roman très girly, où l’on suit une jeune femme exerçant un métier des plus … qui supporte les mêmes tracas que les autres femmes, l’épilation, les problèmes de couples, les mecs en général, les produits de beauté, l’apparence. C’est une lecture agréable mais qui m’a malheureusement paru quelque peu superficielle, ça manquait un peu de profondeur dans l’ensemble — personnages comme « intrigue ». Il est vrai que ce n’est pas un « roman » à proprement parler, plus un témoignage mais, je gage qu’il a sûrement dû être pas mal romancé.
Une lecture sans prise de tête en somme, très bien pour se détendre mais, ne me laissera sans doute pas un souvenir impérissable.

I can't lie - I liked this book. It doesn't tell you about infinite love, but the thing that surprised me the most was that the heroine wasn't completely desperate to sex: she still had lovein her heart. Yeah, obviously that's a nomme de plume. I had such high hopes that this would be interesting book, but alas it's pretty much like reading somebody's blog. Very choppy. There IS some interesting insight, but you have to skip over a lot of blathering. Also, she names her 5 male friends A1, A2, A3, A4, and N. It would have made for SUCH better reading if she had given them actual names (espescially the A's since I really couldn't keep them straight the way I could if she'd called them Anthony, Art...more

I was originally going to just give this stars and move one, but after reading several of the reviews I feel the book deserves to be defended.

It seems a great number of people picked this up expecting it to be a filthy book of perverse pleasure or a justification of prostitution. While there are some hot, juicy scenes, the book is about more than sex. It is also about more than prostitution. It is about Belle's life and ideas. OK, so this is a book most people might not admit to having read. I down-loaded a Kindle copy after reading an interview with the recently un-masked "anonymous" author who, as we now know, turns out to be not so much a tart-with-a-heart as a beauty with brains. The motivation for reading a book like this is probably something akin to the Victorians paying 1d to look in a "What the Butler saw.." machine on the pier.
