Innocent Darkness is a story about Noli, a girl who lost her social status and her chances for a good marriage when her father disappeared, and is forced to go to a boarding school for troubled girls, from where she is later taken to Faery to become the human sacrifice that will save the entire realm. She is found and taken by the queen’s ruthless huntsman Kevighn. He somehow falls in love with Noli even though she’s just one of many girls he’s kidnapped and brought to his queen to be killed. I had such high hopes for this book, but unfortunately, I did not like it at all. I really struggled to finish it, and I felt the characters and the dialogue were very irritating. And sorry, this book is NOT recommended for steampunk fans.
I really wanted to like this book, but it was not what I was expecting - and not for the good either. The cover was awesome - spunky yet exotic at the same time - but the cover was in no way a representation of Noli at all. And she sure didn't dress like that (...more

Read as an E-ARC, through my household librarian. The cover had caught my attention at BEA, but they weren't giving arcs of it there, so I had her request it, as I thought I'd like it.
The cover makes it look more steampunk than it ended up. It's far more of a Faerie tale than steampunk, and while there are steampunk elements, they felt more like shiny window dressing than anything relevant to the plot. Aside from that, it reminded me...more
What a promising start to a debut novel. I was transported back in time to the turn of the 20th century Los Angeles, a place where hover boards and zeppelins fly in the sky. Our heroine, a “sparky” girl named Noli repairs cars and other gadgets. Noli takes her best friend V (Steven) on a joyride in her lovingly restored flying car. Of course, the ride or rather the flight, did not end well and Noli and V crash land in her backyard. Noli is detained for flying without the proper license. She is f...more
How does the saying go? “Good Steampunk is hard to find?”
Ok. So maybe that’s not precisely how it goes, but sadly, that fact doesn’t make the statement any less true.
I’ll admit, Innocent Darkness first caught my eye because of it’s cover. Adorned with gears, a dirigible, the obligatory corset/pocket watch/brass-’n-leather goggles combo, and a rebellious looking heroine ready to flout Victorian-era conventions, this cover said to me, “Hi there. I’m steampunk. Grab a cuppa and read me.”

Aside from the cover and the author's taste in music (she claimed to have listened to Emilie Autumn while writing the draft for this book), I find nothing at all charming about this book.
Oh wait, I do think Kevighn Silver would have been quite an interesting character if the author even gave him a chance and if everyone was more believably fae than they are in the book. As it were, I have no idea why I even tried.

I enjoyed the general concept of INNOCENT DARKNESS where a young girl is rescued from a dire situation, is spirited away to a magical land (the Otherworld in this case), and finds out she not simply an ordinary girl. Where the story lost me was in the dangerous situations Noli was put in because once we get settled into one scenario Noli is spirited away to somewhere else. I never got a chance to get used to the setting or really understand character motivations. As a “dark fairytale”, I expecte...more
Was I the only one disappointed with this book? I mean, it wasn’t that bad, it just wasn’t what I had expected. The thing is, I was expecting a real Steampunk novel, but instead, I found that it was more a faerie book with a touch of Steampunk (which we mostly see at the beginning. Most of the book is spent in the fairy world…) I would probably have enjoyed it more if I had been sold this book as a fairy book, but I was sold to it because it was Steampunk, and I LOVE a good Steampunk. I LOVED this book. Seriously. I love steampunk. I love faeries. To find an author that had the vision to combine the two?? I'm in serious fan-girl mode, people! SERIOUSLY.
Okay, let me try to talk myself down a little bit here...become a little more coherent. LOL. Let's see. Why did I LOVE this book? Well it starts out with a girl who refuses to become the perfect little society Lady taking a flying car for an illegal joyride...awesome. I am an avid reader of young adult novels, and not ashamed to admit it. Once you are past the age where reading level is the main factor in what you choose to read, it doesn't make sense to me to worry about whether you are reading books aimed at a much younger audience. For the most part, I hold young adult novels to the same standard as the adult ones, rarely thinking, "I would probably have enjoyed this more if I read it as a teenager." That thought seems patronizing to me; I had discriminati...more
Innocent Darkness by Suzanne Lazear, the first book in the new young adult The Aether Chronicles, is set for release on August 8 2012. Magnolia 'Noli' Braddock is considered a troubled girl because of her willfulness and love of tinkering. After crashing a flying car with her best friend Steven 'V' Darrow, without the proper permits, Noli faces a boarding school that is not as advertised. Kevighn is the faery queen's huntsman, and he is searching for someone much like Noli to offer as the schedu...more
I picked up Innocent Darkness last week, but I didn't get around to reading it until last night. I couldn't put it down.
There's very little not to love about this YA read. To begin with, you've got a spunky lead who doesn't want to be proper. Got to love stories like that.
Secondly, there's a whole very Jane Eyre sequence in a boarding school/reform school. (Honestly, that's the element in the blurb that made me pick this up.) The truth is, of course, that Noli really isn't a bad girl. She only l...more

Innocent Darkness is a book that I sometimes loved and sometimes hated. There were exciting, funny and enthralling moments. But there were also some annoying, boring and confusing moments to.
The idea behind this book is a gutsy one. It inhabits many genres and sub genres which I admire the author for trying. But at the same time I think it is where a lot of the problems with this book lie. There are pacing issues as we go from one theme and genre to another and I often got the impression that...more

I think alot of the mixed rating for this novel lie in the misleading cover and genre. This novel isn't a historical and isn't a zeppelin/gadget filled Steampunk. I think the best way to describe this novel is that it is tried and true Fairytale. It is what I expected and what I got.
We've got Faeries, a damsel in distress, princes, queens and true love. The novel has a clever plot with smooth pacing and quite a few plot twist. This novel is also a bit more steamy than most YAs, which I suppose...more

Ohhhh I really tried to like this book. How it first started out had promise. I really liked how Noli was portrayed. She seemed like a strong character, and typical when you read some of these steampunk novels. They’re strong willed, always going against the social mores, and always tinkering - which Noli does. She’s also in love with botany - that was pretty interesting and different too.
As the plot progresses, I thought it was off to a good start. The reform school part really got me into the...more

This curious tale set in an alternative world in the early 20th century has romance, magic, a touch of steam powered technology and some brutal reality. Even in these enlightened times there were restrictions on women. So, when Noli, Magnolia Braddock, and her best friend V, Steven Darrow, take up a Pixymobile she had repaired there are disastrous effects. After a high speed chase with the police, she wrecked it and was sent to a boarding school for young women of high spirits. But the school wa...more
I pulled out my awesome goggles for this one, because well, I’ve always had an unusual fascination for all things steampunk. The fashions alone are just my absolute favorite, especially the more Victorian touches. So when I came across one book which literally was described as a ‘Steampunk Faerie Tale’ I was on that thing like well… I always hated those clichés, like white on rice. So let’s just move on. The book is called Innocent Darkness and once again it is apparently going to be the first o...more

Steampunk is one of those genres , that you either enjoy it or don't. For me, I enjoy the mixture of thee Victorian era with the modern/fantasy world and it's aspects.

Ohmygoodness... I LOVED this book!!! *squee* That's not to say that it's perfect because it is FAR from it, but I loved the story so much and cannot wait to see what happens next. And at the end of the day, for me at least, my feelings after putting the book down are way more important than anything else. I will caution readers who are looking for more of a steampunk book because to me, this was a tale about the fey with just a few small steampunk elements thrown in. But since I happen to ADORE...more

'If being a Faerey is anything like this book and includes HOT GUYS....Then count me in!!'

Innocent Darkness wasn't so innocent to me. Why? I felt like the blurb completely deceived me. I thought that I was getting a steampunk novel with fairy tale elements to it. I guess I didn't really notice that Innocent Darkness was being billed as a steampunk "faerie tale" (notice the spelling of fairy). But still, with an opening like that, I was not expecting this book to literally be a tale about faeries. Not only that, but Innocent Darkness didn't even read as a story about faeries with a st...more

First Impressions: Don’t judge me, but I am totally guilty of judging books by their covers. I first saw the cover of Innocent Darkness months and months ago. I was intrigued and couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy of the book. And, from the start, it didn’t disappoint. Innocent Darkness is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside, even if I don’t think the cover is an accurate representation of how I saw Noli in my head!

First off id like to say that this book is badly titled. I can not find the connection between the title and the story, so if anyone knows the connection please tell me. And yes it was marked off 1 whole star because I don't see the connection. The story plot wise was okay not the best in fey story but still good. The characters were awesome like no joke. I really did love the characters. What I didn't love was how the characters acted together. Don't get me wrong at some parts it was cool but a...more

Misleading Cover:
Based off the cover this book should be about steampunk and airships and girls who fly airships, right? All of that was there in maybe the first 50 pages then the next 350 pages were about the Fae and romance. Mentions of steampunk and airships were thrown in once in a while, but besides that there was nothing about this book that should allow it to be categorized as steampunk.

“No, I didn't thank them, but I forgot with you. I still see you as V, as my best friend, not some prince, even an exiled one. It still sounds so strange."
"I only want to be V when I'm with you. Though I have to say," his eyes met hers as a smile played on his soft, kissable lips. "I'd like to a be a little more than your best friend." Taking her hand, he kissed her palm, a slow, lingering kiss that left her gasping for breath even though his lips were nowhere near hers.
"What?" The word caught in her throat.
"Did you dream of me, Noli?" His lips brushed her ear. "I dreamt of you."
"I did. They were..." Her toes curled at the memory of her dreams, those kisses. "Pleasant."
"Pleasant? I seem to remember them being far more then merely pleasant." His green eyes danced in amusement.”
