I am a big fan of Like Water for Chocolate so I was excited to find this. Although not nearly as great as Chocolate it was a great and quick read. (Only 4 stars because of my love for Chocolate).

The story was interesting and touching. The funny thing is I was reading this on the train and a woman stopped to ask what the story was about. I explained of course about Jubilo's ability to understand and read people's (and items') feelings, desires, and hidden meanings. She then went on this tira...more

I did not especially like this book but finished reading it to find out what happened, I tend to finish books unless they're incredibly terrible. I liked Water for Chocolate and Law of Love but I read them a few years ago so maybe my taste in books has changed or maybe this really was a crappy book. I liked the premise of the relationship between Jubian and Lucha but the way it evolved in conjuction with the passage of time didn't jive for me.

You may think you want to read this because you loved Like Water for Chocolate. I couldn't even finish it. Blech.

This was a bittersweet love story set in Mexico during the time of telegraph operators. I didn't find it as powerful as Like Water for Chocolate, which I adored, but I liked the story and elements of Mexican culture. It has themes of the power of communication and love, both between spouses and parents and children.

I just read this book while staying at a home on the beach in the Yucatan. The story takes place in Mexico and has Mayan themes weaved throughout so it was a great book for a "beach read" in Mexico. The author also wrote Like Water for Chocolate and she lives in Mexico.

Um, I didn't particularly like this book having just read "Every light in the house burnin'" which, like this one, eventually dwells on the demise of the narrator's father. However, the final chapter is very emotional and beautifully written.

audiobook. Mexican romance, how did 2 lovers end up so bitter? Extended exploration of electricity, Mayan numerology, telegraph operations, and the communication of love. Reader's voice was hoarse.

It's so hard for me to read Esquivel without bias because I so loved Like Water for Chocolate. This isn't up to those standards, but it's still a really good meandering story about a family.

Just as good, if not better than Like Water for Chocolate. Less magical realism, but still in the Latin American tradition of supernatural/metaphysical heavy prose.

I also loved this one. In fact I chanced upon a review in a magazine cut it out and then the next day found 3 of her books in a second hand shop including this one!

I liked the flashback story a lot, but the "present day" narrative felt a little heavy handed, particularly at the end.

I loved this book. It was a kind of sad story, but I'm glad that I read it. One of my favorite books so far.

I love her Like Water for Chocolate, but this doesn't have much depth or conflict or interest.

Sweet love story, but a bit melodramatic at times.
