I had a bit of an issue with the settings. The hero was once married to the heroine's sister and the divorce was a bitter one. And now the heroine expected him to get over it and make peace with his ex-wife so that they can all live happily ever after.
Too much for me to stomach in. In-laws are always a no no.

This was a cute, fun story, and felt refreshingly low on melodrama or unnecessary angst. The hero and heroine felt like grown-ups; at one point, one of them feels "betrayed" by the other, and I was worried that it was going to become a bigger issue than it should have been, but that person quickly got over it and admitted to being wrong (again, like an adult).

I love the Kent brothers, they definitely deserve to have a full length story about each one and not just a shorten version.
We met Wyatt Kent through Ethan in All She Wants for Christmas. We learned he got burned in his marriage and now stays away from the female race. Well, he’s finally meets the woman who’s going to change that and she was once his wife’s little sister.
When Wyatt arrives at Small Hands Day Care Center, ran by Calliope Andrews, his ex-wife’s sister, all he wants to do is turn...more

My Review:
Rating: B
Overall, this was a fun little read. I had some personal issues with Wyatt just because I felt like he hung onto his bitterness over his failed marriage for entirely too long...(PS. Calliope agreed with me.) I absolutely adored Calliope's character and how ballsy she is! She is awesome!! Here is just the perfect taste of what I am talking about:
"I can't believe a big tough guy like you is afraid of a little think like me, Wyatt." Then she stepped back, her gaze traveling halfw...more

These two, I think I have a soft spot for men that are gruff and angry and turn in to big teddy bears. Wyatt is pissed, he in a funk and its not been light since his divorce. He wanted a family, he wanted kids and dogs and he wanted all of that with Cassandra. So he thought, until they divorced and now he wants nothing to do with women at all. Enter Calliope, Cassie's little sister, he's attracted to her but he doesn't want to be, shes just a kid and his ex- sister-in-law. That makes it all wron...more

This was a pleasant story about a man meeting his ex-wife's younger sister for the first time since she grew up. The eight-year age difference did not seem to matter. I found it hard to believe that they had not gotten to know each other much when they were in-laws, but the author skims over that with no reference as to why.

* READ IN THE HOLIDAY KISSES ANTHOLOGY *
This story is the reason why I bought this anthology. Yes I know I could've bought just this story, but last year I enjoyed all four novellas in the Christmas anthology that the Kent Brothers # 1 was in sooooo here I am. The Kent brothers are hot general contractors. You gotta love a man that works with his hands *waggle seyebrows*. Much in the same way as his brother in book 1, Wyatt was previously marrie...more

This was a great stand-alone read despite it being part of a series. I received it as a free read and it was really my introduction to an author I've heard a lot of great things about but never had the opportunity to read.

Jaci Burton's story "A Rare Gift" is Wyatt's story (you can read Ethan's story in Naughty and Nice). The storyline isn't one of my favourites, where one party is now attracted to former spouse's sibling. Its now 3 years since Wyatt divorced Calliope's sister Cassandra and it was a very bitter divorce. Calliope has contracted Wyatt to do some construction work on the day care centre that she runs and there is certainly some pretty strong chemistry between the two. Calliope is really keen to follo...more
So I usually keep my reviews pretty limited. I love to read, especially harlequins and I read A LOT. So I can't review every single book unfortunately but I will do it at random. So here's my little comment/review.
This book was short and sweet and the overall concept blew me away. Being in love with your sisters ex husband? Who would of thought? Anyways, since the book wasn't too long, it wasn't that detailed. I really loved reading it but I would of loved it even more to have an expanded versio...more

Can I tell you how much I loved this story? I really felt like the characters had time to circle around each other. I didn’t feel like their romantic progression was rushed. And can I just tell you how cute this romantic progression is? Calliope is a quirky girl who knows what she wants and sets out to get him. The potential awkwardness that could result from a woman dating her sister’s ex-husband is dispersed by Calliope’s enthusiasm. Just watching Wyatt’s bear-like nature melt under Calliope’s...more
Wyatt Kent has been hurt after the end of a disastrous marriage. The last thing he wants is to be involved again, but when he is requested to give a bid on adding a room to the local daycare, his interest is peaked by the owner. The owner unfortunately just happens to be his ex-wife’s sister, Calliope. Not ready to give up his anger and hurt over his marriage, he tries to avoid and run off Calliope without much success.

Jaci Burton is another author that I kept meaning to read, but hadn't yet. I picked up this holiday novella and I'm so glad I did because I truly enjoyed her writing style. First, I must say, other than taking place at Christmas, A Rare Gift is a sexy and sweet romance that shouldn't be thought of as a "holiday read" because it can be read year round. I found out afterwards that it's the second story in a series about brothers, who also made appearances in A Rare Gift. The characters were wonder...more
I really enjoy this author. This is a very sweet series about a loving family and a band of brothers who are finding their way in life and love. Lots of trials and also lots of romance.
In this particular story, you have a stubborn male who wants to hang on to the chip on his shoulder like a lifeline. A female who is equally as stubborn but in that she will go after her man with gusto and without apology. I liked the characters a lot. I didn't love how she seemed to chase after him. Dear Ms. Burton,
I must say that I'm totally engaged with your stories, although they're pretty predictable, your characters are really charming!!!
This is novel is about forgiveness, letting go, moving on, and don't be afraid of loving.
Wyatt could be stubborn and mal de la tete, but he's just a sensible, warm, loving man that finds in Callopie (btw, wth about the name? what does it mean?) his fulfilled compliment.
A really easy, steamy (oh, yes!) reading, but entertaining.
Thanks, Ms. Burton,...more

This series just keeps getting better and better. A Rare Gift is the 2nd book in the Kent Brothers series and by far my favorite.
Wyatt Kent has turned surly and bitter since his divorce 2 years before. He’s gone about his life and job in the family construction business. But, people tend to keep their distance when he’s in a mood, which is all the time. Hired to build an addition at the local daycare is his worst nightmare come true. Not only is the daycare owned by his ex-wife’s sister, but he...more

This was a fun, cute story. Wyatt has been a bitter man since his divorce, pushing everyone (including his family) to a distance and wanting nothing to do with any woman.
Calliope has liked Wyatt since she first saw him - when her older sister brought him home, though that pair were never right for each other. She hires the family company to add on to her daycare, and gets Wyatt. He's drawn to her, against his own will, and she's determined to make him start to live again and see that she's right...more

Jaci Burton has given us another of her sweet romance stories in A RARE GIFT. This is the second book in the Kent Brothers series and I’m very sorry to say I haven’t had the privilege of reading the first one. However, it did not seem to make a difference in my enjoyment of this book.
This is a sweet romance and I enjoyed it very much.

A Rare Gift is my favorite series of Kent Brothers.
The story is for Wyatt Kent, on how he still can't get over about the broken marriage that ends with a divorce to Calliope's sister.
Wyatt last saw Calliope on his wedding day with his sister, and he found out that she turn into a beautiful woman. Calliope had a one-sided feelings for Wyatt for years, and now she is a Day Care Center owner and she needs some renovation to the center.

3 1/2 to 4 stars
I really enjoyed this Christmas novella. The heroine was simply fantastic and though the hero came across more like a cantankerous old fart than a torture hero, I did warm up to him by the end. This was an angsty but good read.
Note: This book is part of the Christmas anthology Holiday Kisses: A Holiday Romance Collection

re-read in preparation for the third in the series. I liked it a bit better actually: 3.5 stars (of course Goodreads Challenge won't count this because I read it for the first time this January :P)

I love Jaci Burton books but this one was my least favorite. I thought Calliope was kind of desperate & pushing Wyatt to be with her. I also thought Calliope didn't care or respect what Wyatt & her sister had. It didn't feel like a Christmas story to me either. All She Wants For Christmas is much better than this one
I hated the heroine's name Calliope. And her actively pursuing and seducing her sisters ex husband is disturbing. It's taboo for me so I hated this story. I also disliked the narrator. I don't like male narrators because the female characters usually sound horrendous.

Jaci Burton is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling, award-winning author of over 50 books. She lives in Oklahoma and when she isn’t on deadline (which is often), she can usually be found wrestling with her uncooperative garden, wrangling her dogs, watching an unhealthy amount of television, or completely losing track of time reading a great book.
