Black male struggle seems to be a clique them that finds its way into American society. Though this theme may seem redundant, repetitive and continuous, the truth of the matter is that there is a struggle with Black men in America as there is one in many other countries. Reading "Letters to a Young Brother", I felt as though many of the themes concerning Black men such as personal success, respect for your brother and mother, taking responsibility for your life and actions, and many mo...more

Hill Harper is an actor, but he is so much more. A classmate of Barak Obama's at Harvard Law, he is also a motivational speaker who spends his free time talking to high school students about making the right decisions.

He has written this book for the young men he speaks to all over the US as a series of letters. In each one he answers a fictional question from his "young brother", dispensing advice on how to cope with things like girl problems, school issues and money. The book ...more

Hill Harper gives a young man the tools required in order to be someone notable in a tough generation via e-mail. Young Brotha is that young man. He’s very confused about his life and is seeking somewhat of a father figure which he’s never had to help him traverse through life’s many obstacles. It all started with one letter. Hill eventually befriends Young Brotha, and they begin to exchange letters. Like every young man, Young Brotha is faced with adversity and Hill provides him advice on ho...more

In my best opinion this book is really good. Even though it has no plot or series to the book, the book itself is still good because it helps many kids with problems think about life more. During my reading of "Letter to a Young Brother" it was an interesting thing to read on how helpful this book can be for students with many problems. The book is about this man named "Hill Harper" and yes he is a real person. Hill writes letters about how people can be proactive and good a...more

OK, I have to quality my rating for this book. I didn't really enjoy it that much, mostly because his voice and writing style seem forced and unconvincing.

HOWEVER...I understand that I am not the intended audience for this book, and that's why I give it 5 stars. The intended readers are teenage males. And considering how frustrating I find it that so few celebrity males go this far out of their way to be role models for youth, how could I really criticize this guy for not being the...more

My review may be slightly biased since I am a big Hill Harper fan, however, I think that this book can be very helpful for young men struggling to find their way. His voice is that of a big brother and positive male role model that all young men need growing up. He illustrates his points well and supports those points with inspirational stories and quotes.

I am pretty new at writing reviews for books and would rather not go too much into detail but overall I would say that if you are...more

I was hoping to have my homeroom/literacy success class read this, but not quite sure the average middle school boy can handle some of Hill's content. Overall many good messages. I was a bit confused by his frequent references to "God and the universe"; haven't really heard that one before. He definitely wasn't shy to do plenty of name-dropping (guess that's his way of connecting with his potential audience of readers). I admire his work ethic and positive outlook. His grandparents wer...more

The book "Letters to a Young Brother: MANifest Your Destiny (Paperback)" is a compelling book that I think all young men should read. What I like about this book is that it spoke the truth, even though it was published in 2006 the problems that youths and young brothers are facing are still going on today four years later. I like the way the author connected the different letters that he recieved to his personal life. If I were the author I would write a book to the females in this wor...more

What i learned from this book is that many male figures have different perspectives on what a man is and how some things should be handled. I liked this book because Hill was writing to a young fellow about the typical things young guys usually go through. I didn't agree with Hill on a few advices to his young brother like choosing a pet and pretending to be like it just to have confidence in his self. This book reminded me of when my older male figures tell me these sames advices as Hill becaus...more

The premise of this book is that Hill Harper (an actor I'm not really familiar with from CSI: NY) was inspired by the book Letters to a Young Poet and decided to write a book similiar to that for young African American males. He said that the letters were based on questions he's gotten from fans in emails, letters, and when he talks to kids at schools, etc.

That being said I was excited to see someone taking the time to be a positive role model for young men. When I saw this book I

Let's be honest: I'm not exactly the target audience for this book. But I read it because I work with high school boys and was hoping it would live up to its hype as an inspirational, real book for young men,
and it did. I like Hill Harper a lot after reading this book. He comes across as caring, accessible, and honest. His advice is clear and easy to understand, and he calls on other role models (Barack Obama, Venus Williams, Nas) to help him tackle the issues in the book (school, fam...more

I thought the book was very interesting and enlightening. Hill Harpers book helps give young men a positive outlook on life. Letters to a Young Brother: Manifest Your Destiny is based on concerns and issues that young men face today. Many of the young men didn't have positive role models and were in need of guidance. They wrote letters to Hill Harper and he answered them with positive and honest advice. I think that every young man should read this book because it may answer some of your questio...more

Inspiring book. I received this book on my 29th bday and i was taken back because of the title (thinking this book was for teens) but it was an excellent book. Practical life lessons that any man can take to define them and the atomosphere for thier future. I applaude Hill Harper for covering issues and having the forsight that a lot of young bothers well men in general are not getting in their homes and their community. Will definitely buy a few and put them in the hands of some Young Brother...more

This book is a really good book to use as a guide for life as you grow up. There is no real theme except for the theme of life and having a good look on it, the book is mostly made up of emails asking questions to hill about everything from girls to careers and making money. This is a short but enlightening book and a good book for anyone loking for a road to help better themselves and people looking to mature but dont know how to.

This book is geared toward young black men, but still contains good advice for all young men and how they can reach their goals. This book also explains the importance of not paying attention to what other people have and start focusing on what you have now and what you can do to become successful. It talks about setting goals and reaching your dreams and you have no limitation. I would recommend this book to all young men.

The book "Letters to a Young Brother" was a great book. This book really reaches out to young African American males on daily struggles that some of those young men go through everyday. Some of the struggles he addresses is like not having a father in his life, drugs, gangs and relationship problems. I basically tell you how he dealt with them.

While I wasn't really knocked over my the writing, I found this book to achieve it's purpose which was to inspire young men. After reading the book I questioned what more I could do to help young black men. I ultimately ended up starting a scholarship program to support minority students.

Wanted to love this too. But nope. Came across as bragadoccio about who, where, and what he is doing under the subtext of helping a young brother with his dreams. And, why was the color insert of Hill with the celebs-of-the-moment in the book anyway?

Correspondence with a young man in high school helping to keep him on the right track. Good words, good insight. He also used other people he knew and had them write their feelings and comments on subjects.

This book is almost having a very candid lecture from Hill Harper and his peers. What I liked about the book, is it helped reinforce the obligations and correct priorities in life...great read!

This is an AMAZING book for young boys and girls who are looking for an external push and motivation. This helps them look inside for that push. Great read for teachers/tutors/parents etc.

This is a wonderful message for your young males. I used to work as a youth development specialist with young males, and they need a positive role model like Hill Harper to look up to.

I got this book for free cause Hill Harper was a celebrity guest speaker at the big brother fundraising program that we hosted recently in January. www.ihadla.org

If you don't know who he is, Hill Harper is an actor on CSI: NY. He graduated Brown summa cum laude and then went to Harvard Law.

This book offers genuine advice to young men. There are plenty of gems of truth and I found myself hi-liting portions and memorizing some of the quotes.
