To be honest - I freaking loved it!!

Masquerade is told in alternative perspectives between Heven and Sam. After Heven's attack - by who or what, she doesn't remember - she has these horrible scars covering the left side of her face which has completely changed her world. That is, until she meets Sam. Gorgeous, incredibly sweet Sam who makes her feel as beautiful as before. But Sam has some deep dark secrets. Secrets that are bound to transform Heven's life all over again. This is a story where you'll love going over theories in your head and trying - and failing - to figure it all out. Getting a glance at both POVs keeps the mystery thick and the romance alive. We also get a peek at the villain's perspective. I didn't enjoy this one as much, however. It reminded me of the cheesy scenes in comics where you get a glimpse of the villain muttering empty threats. Fortunately, they are far and few - the focus is kept on Heven's story.

Expect a lot of twists and turns in Masquerade! And believe me, you will not see them coming. My assumptions were completely thrown off track. It starts as a simple enough - even seemingly contemporary - story. But by the end, you won't even know what hit you! Cambria does not shy away from eccentric plot developments for which I have to applaud. It wasn't at all what I expected; nevertheless, I was not disappointed in the least. The romance, however, does leave a little to be desired. There is definite passion and steamy scenes, but the relationship develops very quickly which didn't give me the chance to really feel their connection from the beginning.

All in all, Cambria gives us a peculiar tale with tons of surprises and great personalities. If you're looking for something unique, Masquerade is the book to pick up! (less)

It is hard to put into words what I feel about Masquerade. I liked this book. I was really looking forward to reading it, there where some parts that I found a bit slow, but overall I liked the book. It is about a girl who is attacked, she can't remember anything about the attack, but she has some large scars on the left side of her face. I liked this book. I was really looking forward to reading it, there where some parts that I found a bit slow, but overall I liked the book. It is about a girl who is attacked, she can't remember anything about the attack, but she has some large scars on the left side of her face. These scars make her lose her self-worth and she tries to hide behing large hoodies and her hair. Then she meets Sam and falls in love with him. I found the beginning of the book interesting, but after that it got a bit slow. It was just a girl going to school, getting to know a nice boy and falling in love with him. I liked how Heven became to develop and in slow steps dealt with her scars and how she is now. You can really notice how Heven is changing and this is a fact I really like about the book. About halfway through we finally get to know what Sam is. (view spoiler). The last hundred pages give a nice view of where this series is going and I found myself liking that part the most. The first 300 hundres pages sudenly felt like an introduction to everything that will be going to happen. I liked this book and finished it in two days, while I wasn't that drawn to the story in the beginning I still wanted to keep reading. I like dthe writing style and I liked the orginality of the story and that this story is about a girl with scars who has to learn to live with it (view spoiler). The ending of the book makes me really curious to the next books and I will certainly read the rest of this series.
To conclude a good book, with an original story. I liked how Heven developed in the book. I found some parts of the book a bit slow, but the last hundred pages where very good and makes me curious to the next books in this series, I want to know how Heven and Sams adventure continues.(less)

I would give this a 4.5/5. This book was pretty intense and amazing. Its hard to even believe how much happened. I cant believe it was only 360 pages. It felt like so much more! When I think back to how things were in the beginning of the book, when Heven was hiding behind her hair and her hood, and that first conversation she and Sam had in the school cafeteria, it feels like years ago.

At first, I was a little hesitant to accept Sam since he was totally stalking Heven for like a year, and that...more I would give this a 4.5/5. This book was pretty intense and amazing. When I think back to how things were in the beginning of the book, when Heven was hiding behind her hair and her hood, and that first conversation she and Sam had in the school cafeteria, it feels like years ago.

At first, I was a little hesitant to accept Sam since he was totally stalking Heven for like a year, and that is totally creepy. But eventually I had to let it go and accept him, and even admit its part of what made the book so good. Sam was totally sweet and not dangerous. Realistically, psychologically, I dont know if it is possible for a stalker to not be dangerous, but this is a book, and a great one at that. Sam's utter love for Heven and need to protect and be near her was very consuming, not only for him but as a reader. And it just made me all the more happy to see them together, to know how much it meant to Sam, and to know how long he must have been dreaming of nothing else.

The first part of the book reminded me of Nevermore because of the high school setting, the sweet romance, and the subtle supernatural undertones. But once Heven found out what Sam was, things got more intense, with the story, the romance, and the supernatural elements. Without secrets between them it made their relationship so much more real. I was a little disappointed how Heven freaked out at first, but she forgave him fairly quickly. This was also around the same time she started living with her grandmother, which meant they had so much more time together, and they grew so much closer without the secrets or Heven's mother in the way. And they totally had a couple of hot make-out scenes that I was really hoping were gonna turn into something else, but they didnt have the opportunity in this book. But still, those scenes were hot and I am totally gonna reread them a bunch of times.

In a lot of books the characters often sleep together too soon (*cough* Bitterblue), but this is one book where I feel like they are really there already. I am not sure how much time passed in Masquerade but I think it was a lot. Several months, possibly the whole school year. The way their relationship developed, I feel like they could naturally take the next step. I would normally be really looking forward to reading more about Heven and Sam. But I wont. I wont be reading Charade. I usually steer clear of books that deal with hell or demons, because they really scare me, but I didnt realize before I started this what it was about. This book didnt deal with those things too much, and because I have never actually heard of the creature that Sam is before, it didnt bother me too much and I could just pretend he was a werewolf. But it still bothered me at times. I can tell that this story will be getting more complex and darker, and more engrossed in the supernatural world as it goes along. I wont be able to handle that. As much as I love Heven and Sam, it isnt worth the nightmares. I am sad I cant continue, but its just not an option for me.

One last little complaint. I hate the name Heven. It seems so dumb to me. If you are gonna name you daughter heaven, why not just name her Heaven?! Why take out the 'a' and turn it into a made up word that makes no sense and just happens to sound like heaven? Its so irritating.(less)

Wow! is really what comes to mind when thinking of this book. I could not put it down!

I loved the characters...great lengths were taken in character development, and I connected with Heven instantly. Her best friend irritated me with her shallowness, Cole seemed to have more than friendly feelings towards Heven, and the mother just down right ticked me off. Sam is amazing, and I love that he was able to choose love over evil.

Having heard some amazing reviews, I was quite excited to get this book through PNR/UF Fanatics' R2R program. I didn't know much about it before I began, having only read the synopsis and skimmed reviews. (I don't like accidentally reading spoilers.)

I'm sorry to say I was a little disappointed. Other than a few moments of excitement, a lot of the story was rather slow. The first half in particular was mainly Heven talking about how miserable her life is (which complaint, to be fair, was not with...more Having heard some amazing reviews, I was quite excited to get this book through PNR/UF Fanatics' R2R program. I'm sorry to say I was a little disappointed. Other than a few moments of excitement, a lot of the story was rather slow. The first half in particular was mainly Heven talking about how miserable her life is (which complaint, to be fair, was not without some truth to it), Sam mooning over Heven, and the random appearances of unknown characters, which were explained only much later. Building suspense is a little bit like building a tower of cards. If you do it right, it's really cool, but it's not easy and trying to draw it out for too long just makes it topple.

I was quite frustrated by the characters. They epitomized the qualities of YA leads that really bother me: from Heven, insecurity, clinginess, angst, superficiality; from Sam, overprotectiveness and possessiveness. Some of these attributes can be reasonable in small quantities, but when they make up a majority of a character's thoughts and behavior, it's gone too far. Sam's jealous reaction to Cole particularly bothered me, as did Heven's constant need to whine about something. I don't want to trivialize her injury, because of course it was terrible, but at the same time I would much rather read about how determined she is to deal with it or at least see some kind of change in her, but she seems quite willing to go straight back to her old life.

I'm not a fan of love at first sight in general because it tends to breed this kind of character development and because it often excludes other characters from the story when the main couple are so wrapped up in each other. In 99 percent of cases, the love-at-first-sight trope just seems fake because there's nothing between the characters to back it up.

On a more positive note, this was a very quick read and did capture my attention. I finished it in about a day, even though it was rather long (a little too long for this sort of story if you ask me, but that's not really the point). Masquerade's world is creative, containing a lot of religious elements without being preachy. I do wish there had been more explanation for some of the supernatural/divine aspects other than Sam's nature, because anyone, however benevolent, who claims to be following some sort of Divine Plan makes me nervous, but as that element was introduced later in the story I imagine there will be more in future books.

Even though I personally didn't like it, I think other people who like the things I mentioned in the review might enjoy it. It wasn't horribly written or anything, it just wasn't my kind of book. If you love all examples of YA PNR, this might be the book for you.

I have to start out by saying that I was so taken in by this book that I am desperately wanting to read more in the series. Masquerade is a very well written intriguing book that left me trying to guess what was going to happen. Although there were a few grammatical errors it was overall a great book.

There are so many plot twists and mysteries in this book. You question what exactly Sam is; you think you figured it out; you then realize you were wrong. You ponder who the Hate and the Hope are; being this is a series, you don't get all of the answers regarding one of these characters, but you do get the satisfaction of knowing more about the other. So much happens in this book, it leaves your head spinning.

What I loved best about this book was how each character grew and developed throughout. I believe Heven's development to be the main theme of the book. You're sympathetic to Heven's pain and anxiety in the beginning and you cheer her on as she gets past some of that. You are indignant for her at points. You roll your eyes at her when she does something foolish, but it only makes her feel more real. By the end you are proud of her.

I do have a few complaints. Waiting for the final confrontation with the Hate drug on some. I was a bit disappointed how that conflict took place as the author has Heven put herself in a vulnerable situation yet again. Then after this conflict is resolved, so much more happens that the book doesn't really wind down to a conclusion as much as it just stops.

Even with my couple of concerns, the story is so incredibly good that I cannot give this book less than 5 stars. You simply MUST read this book!!!(less)

From the moment I started reading this book, I was hooked. I loved the character Heven. I found her story intriguing and wanted to see what happened to her. I liked the idea of a really popular girl having a strange accident that she doesn't remember. This is one of those books that pulled me in the minute I saw the cover. It's a very unique one, too! Not every book with a gorgeous cover has a compelling story to match, however, but this one certainly does! In fact, I found it so compelling that I had to read it obsessively until the very end! This is one of those stories that truly fly by as you read them. I adore Heven. It is unimaginable to be left with your face traumatically scarred like that and still have to go to high school where kids are so cruel. To always be looking over your shoulder or behind your back to hear the whispers..... I love the element that Sam brings as well. He is supposed to be deemed evil by his very nature, but he goes beyond that and actually learns to give selflessly to Heven in order to help her regain herself. I don't want to give too much away here but this is one of those that you really have to read.
Honestly I have to say what I really didn't like the most about this book was Heven's mom. I know here I am supposed to comment on something about the novel, but this lady seriously irked me. No mother should ever feel the need to condemn instead of support their child. So I guess what I didn't like is actually a reflection of brilliant writing on behalf of the author. All thoughts included, excellent start to a great series. Recommended read for all ages13+.

When you first read about Heven, who was horribly scarred in an attack she can't remember, you feel sorry for her. WHERE do I even begin with this book? Oh, I know! How about 'where has it been all my life?' or maybe 'why did nobody tell me about it sooner?!' Yeah, that pretty much sums up my feelings towards this book and this amazing author.

Cambria Hebert has created a world that is so completely unlike any I have ever ventured into. Every minute is like a deep gulp of fresh air after years and years of stale, recycled air. It's beautiful. The characters are wonderful, and the way Ms. Hebert has crafted them, you FEEL them. I mean literally as though you're Haven or Sam. You feel as though you know them. You want to protect them and keep them safe (and kill certain characters that I shall refrain from mentioning although the author I'm sure knows exactly who I refer to. I still vote for death by pencil!).

The moment I opened this book, I was engulfed. Literally sucked into the dark, twisted world. Heven, a pretty, popular girl, gets attacked by a monster while walking home one day that leaves her horribly disfigured. Well, we get glimpses of this monster all throughout the book, little peeks that'll leave you shivering. The description is so vivid, so intense, you can almost feel the night air breathing on your neck as you watch Heven trying to make her way home, her heels clicking on concrete, then clacking loudly as she attempts to run from the beast behind her. It's all so much!

I loved Sam. I've already decided to kidnap him and keep him in my book boyfriend dungeon. It's getting quite full in there, but there will always be room for gorgeous, delicious Sam.

He's so protective, so honest and passionate. He was perfect for Heven, who was so broken and needed someone patient to bring her out of her shell. He's so careful with her and I just loved that.

There are a few more parts to this series. You can believe that I will most definitely be getting them. This series has shot up to top spot on my favorite series list.

Well done, Ms. Hebert! You have most definitely got yourself a loyal follower!(less)

This is one novel that I have been eyeing for way too long. It was a spectacularly gorgeous cover and I have seen nothing but great reviews. Masquerade was deviously stunning, maliciously fierce, and wickedly conspicuous! This staggering novel made me fall out of my chair a couple of times! Every time I thought I knew what going to happen; I would get slapped in the face by the next page. Really, this book is that good!

Cambria Hebert has a refreshing writing style that oozes with originality and flows right of the page. Her world is so believable that if I didn’t know better I might fall right into it (oh, wait I kinda did…I fell off the chair). Hebert’s story is told from four points of view and it was intriguing watching how they all came together. Wrapped altogether with characters that were remarkably genuine and sincere and you get one hell of a ride….no pun intended.

This startling tale centers around a girl, Heven, who is a tormented soul and battles everyday as a survivor. As the plot tells you she was brutally attacked and left for dead but she lives and is left with a horrible and ugly scar, dismembering half of her once beautiful face. The poor girl had so many issues that you can’t help but want her to stop curtaining herself and start to believe that she still can have the life that she thought she lost or at least build herself a new and better one. Heven’s main influence in creating her new life was Sam and he holds many mysteries. Your going question him continuously but still you can see that he is an honorable, caring, selfless, determined, and very protective.

Masquerade is a book that I would highly recommend to my readers and my friends. This riveting tale has most certainly not gotten the hype that it deserves and I hope others will jump onboard in giving it a read and love it as much as I did! If you end up by loving it, as I’m positive that you will, then you should check out Charade- book two in the Heven and Hell series….I’m about to!
