A funny story that helps introduce your children to colors. Your child will laugh at all the things this silly animal can do with his spots. A definite hit with my little ones.

When we got the book it came with a stuffed animal and my boys still fight over "Spot" the beloved main character of the story.

This has a great rhythm to it as well which will have you acting it out with the kids which of course will give them even more giggles.

I highly recomm...more

Summary: This book is about an animal who wants to be in the zoo. But when he tries to ask to be in the zoo the zoo keepers kick him out. So he asks two kids why he can't be in the zoo. They tell him that there are no things that he can do. So he shows off all his fancy tricks that he can do with his spots. The kids say that what he can do is fun, but he still can not be in the zoo. So they take him to the circus and tell him that, that is the place for him to show off all his cool tricks. The a...more

This book is a favorite of our family.
I have read it more times than I can count (though I will be putting a ridiculously large number in my 'times read' spot down below) and yesterday my five-year-old read it all to me for the first time.
It's about an animal of undetermined species who, seeing how well the animals at the zoo are treated, wants to be put in the zoo.
It rhymes, it has magic and it's quite entertaining.
At one point, my oldest son would have no other book at...more

"Put Me in the Zoo" is a great book full of rhyme! It is part of the "I Can Read It All By Myself" Beginner Books series, which is one of the aspects of the books that I love. It includes a lot of sight words, and it is easy to read, so students will be able to pick up this book and feel successful because they can read it! If I were using this book in my classroom I would use it to introduce the literary concept of rhyming words, but also colors. The leopard changes the colo...more

I enjoy this book a lot because as I read it to my own children I can hear the voice of my grandmother reading it to me. Over 20 years ago we would cuddle up with her on the couch and she would read to us this classic story of a dog who wanted to be put into the zoo. When they send him away he begins to show a boy and a girl what he can do with his spots! He can do so many thing with his spots that they say he should forget the zoo and enter the circus.

This is a charming story tha...more

Just fun! And easy to read.

Read this as part of a big book of beginner books because that is how the library had it. This and Go, Dog Go! were the only two I liked. Two others are probably fine, but I probably just won't bother with them again: Are You My Mother? (resulted in a friend of mine exclaiming to her mother You are NOT my Mother), and The Best Nest (too much complaining). Finally there were two I'd avoid: It's Not Easy Being a Bunny (who runs away from home), and A Fly W...more

Just to tell you how much I loved this book. I added a different children's book to my list, and this one popped in my head. The only problem was I couldn't remember the title. But I knew I needed to find the cover with the large yellow...dog (??IS that what it is??)

Anyways, I went through the children's book shelves (about 12 of them) looking for this book. Finally I started guessing at the title and did some searches. I found it!!

I know the copy I had when I was a kid ...more

I don't usually review children's books on this site, but I feel compelled to highly recommend this one to anyone with toddlers or pre-schoolers....maybe even kindergarten and first grade, but my oldest is 4 so I don't know for sure what the upper age on this is.

This combines rhymy, sing-songy language with a cute story and bright, colorful pictures. It reminds me of some of Dr. Seuss' best work. In short, it's everything a book for young children should be. I've read it a hundred time...more

By far my favorite Dr. Seuss book.

This afternoon I observed my daughter "reading" this book to her babies. When I asked her about why she chose this particular book, here was her answer.
"My babies love to hear about how he can put his spots everywhere and how they change color. It also helps my babies learn their colors. It helped me. Remember, Mom? I used to mix up yellow and orange. It's also funny when the kids tell him he needs to be in the circus. That's funny."

My father loved this book, and so he read it often to me. Now I read it often to my nieces. I love it all the more for the connection to my personal history.

This is a fun story (the illustrations, showing the children's reactions, are hysterical) about a critter who wants to live in the zoo, and to prove that he should he shows off all the tricks he and his spots can do. Eventually he goes to the circus, everybody is happy.

I will note that the zoo depicted is a very archa...more

I can remember adoring this book as a child, and now I adore reading it to my Kindergarten students!

I got a special thumb attachment from Steve Spangler science. When I read the book I have the thumb on, and when I finish reading I can use the thumb to pick up the dots from the book and throw them to the kids - it's fun! They haven't yet figured out that I am wearing a fake thumb that lights up when I pinch it :)

I remember this book from when I was younger too. I loved this book because all of the polka dots everywhere. The illustrations are very funny. This is a very entertaining book for younger children. I loved the way the spots changed colors. This is a good way for children to learn to read different colors too. Children should definitely have this book read to them at some point.

This book has special meaning for me. As a child of 6 or so, I had a burning passion to read. I recorded myself reading this Seuss book and it is so fun to listen to those old tapes of my scratchy little voice with such inflection may I add! The original book is the best, but I've heard they've made it politically correct now. ?

I have very fond memories of reading this book when I was little. Looking back at it now, I am not at all impressed with the illustrations, and it's written in a style that copy-cats Dr Seuss. I still like the story, about an odd little character who struggles to fit in, and in the end finds the place where he truly belongs.

I once shared an office with a woman who is as silly as I am. Put Me in the Zoo became our Friday book. On Friday afternoons, we closed the door and read it aloud. I'm sure our coworkers thought we were insane ... and maybe they were right! Fun memories though and the book never fails to make me smile.

A boy and girl help a talented, uh, bear-thing achieve his dreams of showmanship. An inspiring story of friendship and self-actualization. One of my favorite books as an early reader. Funny, though—I don't think I ever noticed the cameo appearance in the last page until just now.
Fred
This isn't a bad book and my daughter likes it sometimes but it's far from my favorite to read to her. The fact that it's a shorter one is to it's advantage though, makes it ideal for those nights when there isn't time for a lengthy bedtime story.
Randa Goode
This was one of my daughter's favorite books I'd read her when she was little (3-years-old). We read it so many times, I could just turn the page and she could recite it (since she really didn't know how to read). Great book and great memories.
Rebecca
Funny tale about a spotted dog who is not allowed to stay at the zoo. He gives his reasons why he wants to be there but friends have a different suggestions. I would recommend this book for prek-kindergarten. Can use to focus on colors and arts.
Jasmine
I think I learned to "read" this book before I could actually read. I remember reciting it to my siblings when I was just a tiny jasmine, and laughing as the creature kept changing his spots. Plus, how excellent a name is Robert Lopshire?

I got this for my kids for Christmas. My 3 yr old esp loves it. It brings back memories. I remember that this was a popular book in the home when my siblings and I were growing up. I wonder if they remember it as much as I do.
Alison
This book could be used for a rhyming lesson. Although this is a rather old book, students enjoy reading this book individually. The illustrations in this book are funny and represent the text vividly for the students.

Spot the leopard can change his spots and is on the hunt to convincekids that he is special enough to be in the zoo. This is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Great for grades Pre-K and Kindergarten.
Danny
I loved this book as a kid, and Danny does, too. It was one of the first books where he was able to finish the rhymes. We also have the sequel (written by the son, I think), but the orginal is best.
Colleen Moran
This is a good rhyming book, it is a lot like many of the Dr. Seuss books because each line has a different pattern. The story is good for younger children maybe kindergarten to second grade.
Deb
Classic bold illustrations and cute story of lost "tiger-like" animal finding his new home at the circus after being kindly kicked out of the zoo. Part of the "Bright and Early Board Books" group.
Cornelius
For kindergarten children, I would use this book in the classroom to help children identify colors while reading about a fun filled adventure that a colorful animal has throughout the zoo.
Ethan
He wanted to go to the zoo, but he should have gone to the circus! I liked it because he was friendly. I liked his colors because there were so many, like a rainbow! ~Ethan 8/20/2010
Chelsea
This story brings back so many memories. This was one of my favorite stories and now I would have this in my classroom library. This would be great to talk about animals and colors.
