I feel like with some authors humor...good humor...comes naturally, with others as in this case it's a bit worked. Kinda over worked in my opinion. It...the whole book seemed like a super cheesy tween detective story. I'm not sure it was necessarily meant to be a tween book, I don't know maybe even younger than tween...eh but that's just me.

I'm pretty sure I've never before read a book from a Christian publisher, but my husband doesn't know the publishers like I do and thoughtfully snagged "a cozy mystery" for me at the library. So I read it.
And other than occasional references to going to church, prayer, and a peculiar tendency to regard God as some kind of cosmic matchmaker, it was a perfectly normal and pleasant book. The conceit of Cate Kincaid going to work for her P.I. uncle due to unemployment - and therefore having no real...more

This was the first book of this author that I've read. I was in the mood for a light detective novel, and this fit the bill. Cate Kincaid is a young woman who hasn't quite found her place in life. While she's trying, she takes a part-time P.I. job with her uncle. In what should be a simple matter of confirming whether someone lives at a home, she instead stumbles on a dead body. The police may believe it was an accident, but she doesn't. Where most people would walk away, Cate keeps finding peop...more
MY REVIEW
“Dying to Read” is a comfortable cozy mystery staring Cate, who is trying to find her way and place in life, and ended up in some difficult and threatening situations in her new PI job working with her uncle. When I read the words, “All she wanted was a paycheck. What she got was a murder,” I figured this would be an interesting book to read, and it was. It’s really not what you would call a suspense, thriller type book, it’s more on the cozy light-hearted side. And it was fun working a...more

Cate Kinkaid is working for her Uncle Joe, “dipping her toe into the world of private investigation” until she can find a real job. Her past work experience, and her ex-fiancé, have left her feeling like a failure.
Her first investigative assignment seems to be more of the same: all she has to do is verify the address of a young woman named Willow, but Willow’s gone. Instead, Cate finds a dead body and ends up saddled with the deceased’s cat.
But Cate has spunk and some good instincts, and the off...more

Unemployed Cate decides to work for her PI uncle, despite the fact she has no experience in detective work, after all she's just helping out a little until she can get a "real" job. But, when her first assignment sends her to a book club meeting and a dead body, Cate quickly realizes she may just be in over her head.
The title of the book and the lines "All she wanted was a paycheck. What she got was murder" immediately drew me in. Even as I read the first few chapters, I was pulled in. However,...more

The tagline and the initial description for "Dying To Read" caught my eye.
"All she wanted was a paycheck. What she got was a murder."
I thought. Cool. It's a book that might be a "clean" Stephanie Plumb-like novel.
A fun to read, novel about a young woman who decides to work for her uncle as a PI.
While I like Stephanie Plumb's premise (a female bounty hunter), I wanted a, ok cleaner version to recommend to some of the younger (teen) readers who cross my path.

Dying to Read is one of those books that you simply don't want to put down because the character is so utterly likable, as human as you or I, and you have to find out how they are going to get out of the mess they find themselves in! Cate Kinkaid is a fun character, one who refuses to give up on her life despite one disappointment or dead end after the other, and who as a result ends up discovering her real passion in life. This mystery isn't one of those suspense books where you don't want to t...more

This is the first book by Lorena McCourtney that I've had the pleasure of reading. I have to say that she is extremely talented and definitely knows what to give her readers when it comes to captivating, page-turning mystery! From start to finish, Ms. McCourtney held my attention and didn't let it go for anything! Cozy mysteries are always the best and this book is definitely a wonderful cozy mystery, along with being a great start to a sure-to-be exciting series!

Cate Kinkaid is ...ummm....going through a career crisis. She always intended to be a teacher, but after graduating from college with a degree in education, she discovered that she just isn't a good teacher. She has had some interesting jobs since then, but nothing permanent. While waiting for something to turn up, she has accepted an offer from her uncle to work in his PI firm. I’ve read every book in the Ivy Malone mystery series by Lorena McCourtney I could get my hands on so jumped at the chance to enjoy Dying to Read, a novel that revolves around the Whodunit Book Club and a murder.

Clair’s career has not been who one would call successful. She’s been a gardener (a few days), an elf at the Mall (a few weeks) worked as a teacher (hated giving lessons!) and she’s nearly thirty! So, when her Uncle Joe takes pity on her and hires her as an assistant PI she’s a little nervous. That nervousness turns into full terror when she tries to find the young lady involved in her first (and only!) case.

I feel this book has true promise. For a debut book, I found the character very likable. A young girl, Cate Kincaid, finds herself somewhat lost in life. Her romance life is stalled, her work life is an interesting tale of non-success, and so she has moved in with her Uncle Joe and wife to become an Assistant Private Investigator. Training at this point is zero as Uncle Joe is in the hospital with an unexpected new hip. So...she is assigned simple work.

Cate Kincaid is a substitute P.I. for her uncle. It doesn't take long before she finds her first dead body at the bottom of a stairway. The dead woman is Amelia, the head of the mystery book club in Oregon. It is amazing how one death can lead to so many different suspects and eccentric people. However, Cate has the stamina to react and regroup very quickly. Perhaps, this good character trait is because she believes in prayer. At one time she prays with Willow.
