ACT OF LOVE - NR
Lansdale, Joe R - standalone

Telling the tautly plotted story of a modern Jack the Ripper's spree in Houston, Lansdale creates a powerful combination of crime, police work, and social commentary--all with an eye for graphic detail.

Absolutely none of the characters had any redeeming social values - I couldn't have cared less about any of them. Not for me.
Matteo Pellegrini

Joe Lansdale's first published novel, from 1981, was released in the early days of the serial killer craze that gripped the reading and movie-watching public in the '80's, the zeitgeist that culminated in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, but kept hobbling along after that until most of us were sick unto death of serial killer stories.

The story is simple: a depraved killer, The Houston Hacker, goes around slicing up women, and a detective, Marvin Hanson, pursues him. There are a couple of twists and turns...more

Lansdale, in “Atto d’amore”, cerca di s...more

S'intravede, tuttavia, anche una grandissima for...more

This book was written in the 80s, so there are references that(younger)readers won't get (as in, "typewriters" lol) but all in all I thought it was a great book, because not only does it tell you about one of Hap and Leonard's closest friends Marvin Hanson, but it also tells of two of his toughest cases, and gives you some background on (or I *should* say "fleshes out" other stories in the Hap and Leonard stories) so that's really great. The only problem I had was the fact is that it was dated a...more

Act of Love is Joe R. Lansdale's first full-length novel, an expeditiously paced crime story that pulls no punches in the gruesome department. A young Lansdale finds his voice in this grisly tale about a savage serial killer terrorizing the city of Houston and the hard-boiled cop determined to bring him down. By any means necessary. This novel is a must read for all Lansdale fans, for it shines like the shimmering glint from a knife blade on what is still to come from the master of mojo storytel...more

this story was a bit gruesome for my liking, but it was easy to read and enjoyable.

Good fast read. Serial killer, chase, novel that is gritty and violent as well as entertaining. The line between this being a thriller and a horror novel is blurred as it could be either in that Lansdale doesn't pull punches with the violent content or with the suspense that he creates in the story. Kind of like putting James Patterson and Richard Laymon in a blender.

Little Icelander

Although not particularly in keeping with his trademark style, this is a very good outing, and a very decent serial killer thriller. A whodunit that kept me guessing, and where everyone was a suspect! Be warned, very graphic

Early, gore-soaked, Lansdale effort, worth a read for fans. The foreword by Vachss and the afterword by Lansdale, hisownself, are naturally must-reads as well.

I loved the foreword (Andrew Vachss) and afterword (Lansdale) better than the book but for a first novel, this is pretty darn good. Lansdale’s Vanilla Ride and Lost Echoes are the books that made me a fan. Lost Echoes has a Koontz flavor that I enjoy. I’ll definitely read more of this author.
Todd Campbell
A good crime novel by Lansdale, and an excellent effort for his first novel published. The only thing that detracts is that has not aged well but if you read it knowing it was written in 1981 and for that time you can appreciate the excellent concise prose and gripping story.
Christine
Joe Lansdale's early police procedural has the clunkiness of a first novel, but the raw viciousness of the fine crime writer he became. This edition includes an interview with Landsdale. His reading list alone is worth picking up the anniversary edition.
Simon Deimel
The story contains elements of violence, but I love the unexpected twists. The author tried to avoid lengthy passages. I recommend it to people who like thrilling stories.

Shocking in its graphic depictions, and as seamlessly twisty as any mystery. How do you not love Joe Lansdale?

Re-release of Joe's first book. Would read again but I have an unread copy of one of his new ones that needs attention.

“Marvin: – La necrofilia ce l’abbiamo sepolta dentro.
