An interesting collection of stories with the voice of the Valle. This book was written in Tex Mex (Called Spanglish everywhere else, but in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas it is just how most people speak--a mix of Spanish and English with no clear distinctions), and between that and the stories that are told the reader can get a clear glimpse of what life is like in the RGV.
While reading it seemed just like I was hearing stories from valley residents. Definitely a nostalgic read for that...more

Infante explores the lives of (especially young) Mexican-Americans in south Texas and northern Mexico, focusing on how disaffected members of the evangelical Christian community navigate the gap between the creed they've been brought up to follow and their own budding identities. A pregnant girl, a victim of rape, a gay young man, an increasingly agnostic teen...these resonant, true-to-life characters struggle to retain their dignity and find happiness despite the rigidity of their culture.
