Book Review – The Orphan King by Sigmund Brouwer
Posted by Shawn | Edit Published in Uncategorized

One of my favorite types of books is sci-fi/fantasy, especially if the book is by a Christian author. I have read a few of Sigmund Brouwer’s other novels, but this was the first that was classified as Young Adult fiction. I decided to try it since the premise of the book is in Medieval times and I generally like stories in that era.

The Orphan King is the story of a young man named Thomas, raised More...

The Orphan King, the first book in the Merlin's Immortals series, is the beginning battle of good and evil. This book turned out to be pretty good but not the best by any means. I am not much into Christian type books and honestly if I would have known a head of time that this was that kind of book I probably would not have read it. However, I am glad that I did because it was mildly entertaining and did have some good elements within the book that kept it fun and lighthearted. Thomas is the mai More...

The title "The Orphan King" basically gives away the goal of the book. It is a pretty straight-forward quest story, complete with a wise, crusty older mentor, a beautiful girl with a mysterious past, and a cute-but-pesky thief/sidekick. What it doesn't have is a compelling villain. The evil is introduced with an effectively creepy opening scene featuring two mysterious druids...and after that, there are only whispers of their treachery behind the scenes. The other villains--Thomas's oppressive, More...

This was a fun read and intriguing. I’m still not entirely sure what’s going on in the land and with Magnus but that’s ok because it adds to the suspense and certainly makes me want to keep reading the series.

The characters were slowly revealed to the reader and in some cases we still don’t exactly know who a person is completely or how they are connected but that just makes you want to keep reading. They have distinct personalities and their own quirks, also they fit the time period of the earl More...

I found the story of Thomas really appealing and captivating.I don't usually prefer books like this but something intrigued me.And of course the cover has something to do with that.Anyway,I usually prefer books with werewolves, vampires and all that paranormal stuff that everybody likes.Or I think they do.

Anyway this book tells us the story of Thomas as I said.Thomas is an orphan who grew up in the monastery where t More...

The character of Thomas is very strong in this novel. He is brave, admirable, and unstoppable in the face of danger. In my son's words, this character is "epic." He works toward fulfilling his destiny to conquer Magnus castle and the druid order. It's a classic battle of good vs. evil, all of which will appeal to teens who are fans of Arthurian lore. There are great themes of faith, friendship, trust, courage and hard work.

The author weaves a great plot with twists and turns that will keep the More...

The Orphan King Book Review

Many stories deal with the classic fight of good versus evil. I’d describe ‘The Orphan King’ as a mix of fairy tale, fantasy & historical fiction.
Thirteen hundred & twelve is the year and times are dark. Science is regarded as evil & the wealthy reign. Thomas has served four hypocritical monks for the length of his childhood. Believing himself to be just another penniless orphan. He’s tended their garden & weathered their brutality.
Before her death More...

"The Orphan King" by Sigmund Brouwer is the first book in the "Merlin's Immortals" series. The next book "Fortress of Mist" becomes available in February of 2013. From what I understand, it is an updated or revamped version of an older book. This is the first book I've read by this author, so I'm unable to shed much light into that.

In this book we meet a young man, Thomas. An orphaned boy who has been raised in a monastery by gluttonous and greedy monks who would rather fill their own bellies More...

I enjoyed this book. Thomas is a great character, one that while young is smart and resourceful. He is willing to trust those around him, but also does not offer complete and utter blind faith to them. In other words he has a head on his shoulders and isn't afraid to use it. His traveling companions, William the Templar Knight, John the pickpocket, Magnus the unknown who knows more than he's telling and the mute girl Isabelle who also is hiding something. It is fun to see these characters grow a More...

Raised in medieval England by cruel monks, Thomas has a hard road ahead as he leaves the only home he’s ever known in search of his destiny. Meanwhile, two groups struggle to control him without his knowledge. Some readers may not appreciate or believe Thomas’s surprisingly harsh retaliation against the admittedly oppressive monks who raised him; others may take issue with all the skills that Thomas has somehow managed to teach himself. But minor believability issues aside, The Orphan King is an More...

First, I was attracted to the book for its cover, not just the design but the name itself: Orphan, King, Merlin, Immortals, that’s sounds cool, the mysterious guy and the “medieval feeling” attached to it.

The narration pace flows well, you can get some details from here and there, and know where you are, and whom the characters are. It’s easy to identify the main characters but also you can feel identified with one of them, their personalities are nic More...

The synopsis of The Orphan King sounded interesting which is why I selected this novel to read. However, I could not really get into this book. While reading this novel, I felt that everything was squished together. It did not go into elaborate detail on anything. It merely mentioned something and continued on with the story. It didn’t give the reader a chance to really dive into the pages of the book. It felt in a sense quite flat and vague to me. Although it jumped from one thing to the next, More...

The Orphan King's a medieval fantasy with a lot of potential, but for a couple of reasons I don't think that potential's been realized. There are actually two plots going on, the first with Thomas as an orphan trying to reclaim his birthright, and the second's a bigger, overarching conspiracy with druids and templars. Honestly, only the later really interested me, and this book seems to have left so much of that plot unexplored and unresolved, I just have so many questions about what's going on, More...

While the story got off to a bit of a slow start for me - there was a lot of background information to include in a shorter novel - about 100 pages in the story began to get really interesting. However, I'm not sure how the author could have given that information (all fairly important) without taking the extra pages to do so.

With intrigue on top of intrigue it can be difficult to tell friend from foe from random person on the street. But this is the situation Thomas finds himself in as he journ More...

Thomas has had it up to here with the servant's life. As low man on the abbey totem pole, he is little more than a slave to the corrupt monks. And yet, until now, he has been content to bid his time, studying the secret books him mother left him and preparing for the destiny that awaits him. And now, finally, it is time. With the assistance of a lone knight, an impish young pickpocket, and a pretty deaf mute who is more than she seems, Thomas sets out to find and reclaim the mysterious and impre More...

I really wanted to like The Orphan King. Reading the synopsis, I had so much hope. It had the potential to be a killer fantasy. Instead, it turned out to be a cold, confusing novel.
The cover of The Orphan King, henceforth known as TOK, says it is book one of its series, but obviously there must be more books before it. I could not grasp the plot line at all. This is the first book I have ever read by this author. But I thoroughly enjoyed The Orphan King from start to finish! It has two of my favorite things, it is set in medieval England, and it has the beginnings of what I know will be an awesome good versus evil battle in the coming books! I was fascinated by all the characters but especially Katherine, William the cryptic knight, and Thomas our hero. Today I am reviewing The Orphan King by Sigmund Brouwer. I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.

When I saw this book was eligible for review, I was instantly interested. The storyline sounded very cool, and it intrigued me. I wanted to find out what was going to happen. After having a tough time getting the ebook to work, I finally settled in to read some of it. It WAS interesting. The characters were (mainly) lovable in their own ways, and I ch More...

Plot: This was an interesting plot with a lot of mystery and intrigue. The plot is revealed as you read and you are kept in wonder as the story unfolds. But by the end of the book, the plot has been revealed and executed. You are left, however, with questions that are sure to be answered in the rest of the series.

Characters: The character development in this book is very interesting. You start off with no knowledge of any of the characters, but as the story goes on, you learn about the intention More...
