This book did it for me. I know it was outdated and definitely showed its age with some political incorrectness in sexual harassment in the office place, but I loved the story. I thought Nick was arrogant and a user and pulled one over like on Lauren. He lead her to believe he was really into her and more than a one night stand. This turned out to be an okay read after all. It started really slow for me, but definitely picked up in the middle. I loved the heroine. She was an innocent, but she didn't make the arrogant hero walk all over her. He got more than he bargained for with her. This book is underrated in my opinion. There aren't too many fans for this book, well that I know of. Most people that I talk to about this book either a) don't care for this book or b) hate it because of one reason or another. Mostly they hate it for the hero, Nick Sinclair. Nick grew up without the loving care of a mother. He did all that he could to get his mother to love him but because his father wasn't the richy rich guy that could pay for the lifestyle in which she was accustomed to. So she left them and went to marry another guy who was richer and more successful than Nick's father was. Nick carried the hurt of the little boy he was and used it to fuel his drive to become even more successful then the man that took his mother away.

And he did.

He built this empire and is one of the most wildly successful businessmen in the business right now and he's living the life. He's not tied down, he can have any woman he wants, every man wants to be him and he's content with the life he's living. He did everything he could to get to the top and now his competitors want a piece of his pie and they'll do anything to take Nick out of the top spot. Anything, which includes hiring someone to apply for a job at Nick's company and spy on the company and feed them information that will help them take Nick out.

Enter Lauren Danner, the heroine.

Lauren is the person that is hired by one of Nick's biggest competitors to spy on Nick. She thinks she's doing it for a good cause because her relative says that Nick has been stealing information from his company and he's tired of it so Lauren takes the job and wants to do right by her family. He offers to pay her so that she could keep up with her father's medical bills and she jumps at the chance that Phil has given her.

Judith McNaught does a fantastic job of drawing a reader deep into the lives of her characters. She makes you wish that you knew her characters in real life, that you were her characters and she does it in a way that is so entertaining that after you put the book down, you're still thinking about the books and the characters days or even weeks later. That's how it's always been for me and this book.

I loved the way that Nick and Lauren fell in love. I loved that they were put through the wringer and that their love was tested because after all was said and done, there was not a doubt in my mind that these two were meant to be together. There was no doubt in my mind that Nick believed that Lauren wasn't guilty of the things that he thought she was. Some people were pissed off that Nick would have believed the worst in Lauren after all that they went through to be together but I understood why he was mad. She never came clean about who she really was and what she was really hired to do. He had every right to bleeping pissed at Lauren and even though he did some pretty harsh things, he made things right in the end.

Nick wasn't the perfect hero. He told his own lies and he played his own games but I couldn't be mad at him because I was so in lust with him and it's saying something about Judith McNaught's writing that she could write a hero that smokes and still make me love the ever living shit out of him because I did. I loved Nick, he is one of my favorite JM heroes.

Overall, this book was such a delightfully emotional roller coaster for me and I totally loved the ride. It's one of my comfort reads and it's one of those books that always makes me a little giddy. Judith McNaught writes the kind of novels that wring all of the emotions out of you and I wouldn't have it any other way. This book is a total winner for me, seriously! If you haven't read this book, try it out, you just might like it.(less)

I see why Wena gave this a high rating-its really a good book! It took a couple of days to finish it. This story reminds me so much of the Fifty Shades Series. The only difference would be the time the story played out. Here the story of Lauren and Nick seem to fly by so fast. Where in the Fifty series you get to know more of the characters and you see everything played out over 3 books instead of one. It was really good! That right there was a big NO-NO! What was she expecting…a gentleman? She was trying to play grown up and ended up being treated as one. Lesson learned the hard way, or should I say 'hurtful' way. But I love how she was putting up a strong front. As much as she wanted to give in to his seduction schemes and considered becoming his mistress, she put her foot down. You go, girl! That weekend made her grow up really fast! Nick was emotionally unstable because of his mother. Talk about an uncaring, selfish bitch. How could anyone just walk away from a child and not look back. I suppose her social status and money was far more important than a child concieved from her first marriage to a poor nobody. He did well for himself and his determination put him in the position he is in now. What I didn't like was how he wouldn't even listen to her in the end. Didn't even try to give her the benefit of the doubt. How can you go from confessing your love to someone to completely turning your back on them in an instant? And the names he called her was totally unneccessary! I loved how he traveled to her to plea for forgiveness and apologize. I'm glad she did but I wish she would have made him wait a little while longer to earn her trust! The way he did her in that office was unforgivable. It was cold and heartless and just flat out mean. Lauren should've had him woo her all over again and earn his way back into her heart.

I officially love Judith McNaught (at least her contemporary romance). Which will not deter me from criticizing her. As a matter of fact, I suspect that I love her writing even more because I know I love it in spite of everything that riles me about it. McNaught doesn't rub me the right way. And yet, I still get caught up in her stories and feel for her characters and know exactly what she's talking about. Which will not deter me from criticizing her. As a matter of fact, I suspect that I love her writing even more because I know I love it in spite of everything that riles me about it. McNaught doesn't rub me the right way. And yet, I still get caught up in her stories and feel for her characters and know exactly what she's talking about. At the same time as she defends opinions which I strongly disagree with, she manages to write the love stories that are closest to my heart and my experience, to tell me all over again how I fell in love. Hell, gimme more.

Self-made multimillionaire playboy CEO Nick Sinclair falls in love with small-town, virginal secretary Lauren Danner. Welcome to Ms. McNaught's world! I don't even know why I like it. And in a way, I don't. I'd like to convince you that this isn't what the novel is about, that the jet set gatherings, designer clothes, jewelry and charity balls are only there for show, for fun, kind of like reading about the gowns the princess wears in a fairytale... But that's not even what irked me. What did are the infamous "double standards" the title tells of. You'd expect in a romance novel written by a woman, such a title announces the questioning, ridiculing and final destruction of said double standards. You'd expect the author to be in earnest when she puts the words in her hero's mouth:

We don't want or expect a woman to be inexperienced. We're liberated too, you know. You have the same physical desires I do, Lauren, and you have the right to satisfy them with whomever you wish.

Sadly, double standards are here reduced to an accessory device for the love story. We soon find out that the hero's liberated view on female desire only betrays the fact that he has never loved a woman, and that the double standards he eventually pulls on Lauren are the sure sign of his true love for her. Because a man who loves you only wants you for himself. And a woman who's worthy of love talks like this:

I can't handle casual, indiscriminate sex, and what's more, I don't like people who can―people like you! [...]
I can't detach my emotions from my body, hop into bed and have a wonderful time, and then forget about it. I'd want you to care, and I'd care.

Now let's get this straight: casual or uncommitted sex never has to mean it's indiscriminate or emotionless. You can care a lot, and adore a person for who they are, (and both be single and horny,) without wanting to settle down and start a family with them―which for me is the only reason why you would ever commit. Just because you're going to have more lovers than husbands doesn't imply you're ready to welcome the whole world in your bed! The suggestion of which is so stupid, so absurd, so insulting, so degrading and misogynistic it should never cross any sensible person's mind. Just because I can handle uncommitted sex doesn't mean that I'm an easy lay, or that I don't have feelings!

[/rant] And yet I loved Double Standards. Well, yes, because if you forget about the sly and, after all, incidental implications of Lauren and Nick's quarrel over how to handle sex, then I fully and delightfully believe in McNaught's contemporary love stories. They are the irrefutable argument against all the trash talk that wants to portray romance fiction as an unrealistic, distorted take on love promoting dissatisfaction in real life.

Reading McNaught for me is like reading about us, and I never get tired of it. On top of that, I must give her credit for objectively mastering the art of twisting, wrenching and cajoling a reader's heart. Although her stories are quite predictable, especially once you've read a few, somehow it doesn't stop me from discovering each new one with the enthusiasm and anxiety of the first time. Another evidence that experience and knowledge do not "spoil" anything that's truly worthwhile...(less)

This is a really cute story. It has all sorts of gooshy dialogue at times, lots of fire-cracker dialogue. I like both. A lot.

Basically, Lauren's seventh or eighth cousin, Philip Whitworth, agrees to interview her for a job. He sends her off to Sinco to get hired, but she deliberately fails the test. A sweet romance.

My Take
Yes, it is formulaic in the general plotline but, oh, so interesting in how McNaught lays it out. I especially loved the retorts from Lauren as that angry 9-year old!

Part of it made me furious, another made me sad, and overall, it just made me laugh to watch Lauren unconsciously driving Nick so crazy and how his frustrations manifested in a driving pace in the office.

While the story was enjoyable, it read more like an early manuscript in McNaught's writing career. Too sh...more

I really enjoyed this one. I know that Paradise rates so much higher and is considered best of Judith McNaught contemporary romance but I have to disagree. I liked this one better. May be its because there wasn’t so much “work” talk since this contemporary romance is old, no cell phones, people are using typewriters and women are wearing bolero, which is a clothing item most young people may not even recognize.

This book started out very slow for me. The first one third of this book seemed to just be the story of 'How Lauren Danner got everything a girl could possibly want' which didn't exactly provoke much empathy for her even when things started going wrong. Call it jealousy if you want, but I just thought Lauren was too perfect a heroine. She was confident, witty, stunningingly gorgeous and intelligent AND she got the man... I certainly didn't connect with her much.

Another criticism I would have of this book is that it is the most abrupt book I've read. Although the beginning was a bit slow and not particularly interesting, things started happening out of nowhere. Like *bam* two days after meeting Lauren decides she's in love with Nick. Then *bam* they have sex. *Bam* Lauren's virginity goes out the window (and apparantly it doesn't even hurt). *Bam* he leaves her. *Bam* they get back together and now... they're getting married? I could go on but I'm sure you get the gist. There is a little bit of suspense at the end but its solved very quickly.

Despite the book's shortcomings I did like the witty banter between the two and some of the things Lauren said to Nick were quite funny and I found myself reluctantly thinking "You go girl!" I'm sort of glad the book wrapped up quickly because I think I wouldn't have enjoyed reading more. I wouldn't say this book was the kind of quality you'd expect from Judith McNaught but then again I didn't read it with very high expectations. It was definitely better than Someone to Watch Over Me but it doesn't even begin to compare to Paradise and her historicals.

Rate: 3.5 - 4 stars(less)

I can't say it is a bad book. It is just not my style. Flimsy girly novel with a typical character set. 30 Something, stunning, stinking rich, talk dark and handsome, sensitive and tender, biggest boss of the company falls in love with 20 something drop dead gorgeous and sadly naive girl from some small town looking for a job as secretary in the big city and walks right into the perfect job.

Another reviewer pointed out that this was definitely an 80's book, as an employer who treated an employee this way would have made the girl very wealthy.
His treatment of her from the beginning was terrible. She was very naive. I was glad to see that she stood up to him for the majority of the book. There were some of her comments that I wanted to stand up and cheer.

I love this book. I read it when I was in high school and I had the original book. I was heartbroken when it was destroyed by water damage in our attic; I kept looking for it and looking for it. After doing a Harlequin Temptation search and gauging the year it was written; I found it today and picked the book up at B&N in Durham. I am happy to say it is as good as ever. This book. My goodness. It's one of those "if loving you is wrong, I don't want to be right" kind of books for me. I consider myself a little of a feminist, so the characters in this book should have rubbed me the wrong way. It was one big lesson on sexual harassment from start to finish. This is a shorter novel than most for McNaught, and it isn't as intricate. There is a lot of conflict in the book, but it is hard to follow the mood swings of the main characters. There is a lack of the main male's perspective, which is sorely missed during the main female's bouts of insecurity.

It has the makings of a great novel, with good repetition and foreshadowing, but it falls short simply because it does not have enough supporting scenes to make their story and emotions seem plausible.

This is my first Judith Mcnaught book. I find its title interesting and so I bought the book. It is a little bit awkward for me to read it at first because it was my first romance novel. But I didn't expect that I am going to like the story.

Shelves: favorites, good, possessive-heroes

ahhh this book.. this book fills me up with all goey and romantic feelings... so sweet and yet not corny. nick sinclaire is EXACTLY the kind of hero i like- possessive, funny, a little lost and a little jerk-ish!!
but for the first time in many days.. it wasn't the hero that made a story my fav, it was the writer... the way she describes- adn she actually describes- her story is sooo fulfilling.. it didnt feel like those novella kind stories out there... it was detailed and not written in a rush!...more

احب القصص اللي تدور حول علاقة الرجال مع امهاتهم سواء كانت علاقات جيدة او لا ... في هذه الرواية علاقة البطل مع امه معدومة ... الذكريات اللي يحملها بذاكرته مؤلمة ، مازلت استرجعها كأني قد شفتها كلمحة من شريط سنمائي .. الكاتبة تعتبر من الكاتبات اللي احب اقراء لهم ولو ان هذه الرواية الوحيدة لها اللي علقت ببالي اكثر من غيرها

As much as I loved this one, it kinda makes me wonder if JM actually wrote it because it lacks the maturity that I usually find her writing.

As far as contemporary romance go, the story truly delivers. But there's no element of surprise as the plot is pretty cliche and cheesy. Not that it is bad thing, especially when your own love life is non-existence. So, this is a great book to be used as an escapism :)

Maybe it is just me because I can't seem to get enough of JM's story, but I find the endin...more

I really really like Judith Mcnaught... but this book was so empty and previsible... a girl who falls in love for a bad guy... but he was bad because of how his mother treated him... and the woman of course understood everything... and in the end... the bad guy falls in love for the good girl, and give her a jewel, and the girl forgives the guy.... and they are happy forever...
