Okayish. This conclusion to the trilogy is very short in comparison to the previous two. It’s almost like a miny chapter in Margaret’s life. She and her husband are back at home in England and the in-laws are still annoying and interfering. Margaret now has an infant son who is the apple of everyone’s eye. However, Margaret’s sister in law hasn’t been able to have children and so she isn’t too happy about this and will stop at nothing to have a child. Even if it means murder and packs with spiri More...

“The Water Devil” is the third novel in Riley’s Margaret of Ashbury trilogy, but it stands by itself just fine. Set in 1360 England, it combines the supernatural, mental illness, a love story and much plotting and counterfeiting.

With her family finally back all together after the war with France, Margaret- who not only talks to God, but has God answer her) is happy at home. That doesn’t last long, though, as her father-in-law promptly, Sir Hubert, invades her house with his rude man More...

I really hope this isn't the last we hear of Margaret. It says the third in a trilogy, but the ending is wide open. I've enjoyed all of her books, starting with A Vision of Light, but they don't come often enough.

This was a quick read. In some respects a bit too quick. I'd actually give it a 3.5 stars if I could but in this case I'd go higher rather than lower. The story follows Margaret of Ashbury as her husband Gilbert de Vilers is heading off with the Duke of Lancaster to try to win France for Edward III. Only one or two chapters deal with their separation and it's a bit confusing as to what is going on. When they are reunited, Gilbert's family once again swoops down and creates havoc. So Margaret, Gil More...

The third and last of Riley's books about Margaret of Ashbury; a lighter story with an unexpectedly serious third-act twist. Margaret is happy with her children and her husband Gregory, but once again his tumultuous family raises havoc in her peaceful world. Gregory's irascible father Sir Hubert is in debt again, and pledges Margaret's daughter in marriage to get himself out of trouble. Margaret struggles to extract her daughter and her father-in-law from the situation, hampered by a mischiev More...

Been a long time since I read the earlier Margaret of Ashbury books. Found this to be exciting w/ lots going on & lively characters. There were some "magical" bits with Margaret's 'powers' and the 'lady of the pool'. I liked the elements of the pagan past coming into play. Overall a rather nice read with images that will stick in my mind.

Wonderful! A few unexpected twists to this one. I don't want to give away too much, but I really liked the resolution at the end. Especially the fact that Margaret's father-in-law finally realizes what is really important and how blessed he has been.

Wow, I just finished reading this and I loved it! I liked it a whole lot better than the second one and maybe even more than the first one! Very exciting and full of colorful events and people. I hope she keeps going with this family. They are in my heart now :)

I'm very sorry this series is finished I loved the first two books. I had a 20 year break between books 2 and 3 simply because I did'nt know until last month that there was a book 3. Book three was just as good as the first two - if not better, and it was like catching up with an old and very interesting friend.

I then came to find out that Judith Merkle Riley died and there'll be no more books at all from her.

A sad time. She was an excellent writer.

This book is by no means as good as the first two...but of course I enjoyed it because I love the characters...A Vision of Light is probably one of my favorite books ever...I've read it countless times.

Okay. something of a disappointment. This did not come up to the others and was rather quickly finished. But I suppose Riley just wanted to finish the trilogy after all these years.

The last in the trilogy was almost as good as the others. But like most good stories, I wasnt ready for it to end, and it ended quickly!

Final book of the Margaret of Ashbury series. Boy, these were just great. Really loved the interaction between Margaret and the "demon". I can't recommend these enough!

Though Judith Merkel Riley has long been one of my favorite historical writers (Vision of Light, In Search of the Green Lion etc.) this book was lacking. It just wasn't as "fleshed out" as her other books. And the writing was a little sloppy--definitely not up to her normal high standards. All that said, it was still a good read. The characters were interesting and the plot bizarre enough to make it fun.

Funny, wonderful, feminist, saint, medieval.

Ghosts, a water spirit. Riley makes me smile, and lets me live in a world where god sighs when a sort of saint is arguing with him...

I didn't intend to reread these, they attacked me and sucked me in.

Long time to wait for the last in a trilogy I really enjoyed, but worth the wait. It was shorter and somehow lighter than the other two but still sharp and lively and I laughed out loud while reading a few times, which I don't often.

Such a wonderful book! I do hope there will be more! Maybe about the girls?

I felt like I was emitting a happy glow after I finished it.

Kind of cheesy and predictable, but good. Found myself wanting the story to continue (this was the last book of the trilogy).

Another pleasant addition to the Margaret of Ashbury series, albeit shorter and somewhat less adventurous as the others.

It wasn't as good as the first two. I think she loved the characters but didn't have as solid of a plot.
