How Stephen Got His Groove Back.
I was disappointed by The Last Lie, but White is back in fine form with this one. I blew through it lickety-split. I might have even gone with five stars if not for all the stuff about Amanda's brother's boners (yes, THAT kind of boner). That got old, and didn't contribute much to the plot.
Things get pretty chaotic in Boulder for Alan Gregory and Sam Purdy, what with forest fires and psychos and friends who lose their coping skills, not to mention the stirring u...more

Thanks, Dustin. My book arrived yesterday, and I have some extra reading time right now, so I ready to get started!
Oh, my, I didn't see any of this coming! I didn't want this book to end, didn't like to think about what was happening to these characters that I have liked so much--and don't want the series to end! I won't say more, don't want to spoil it for my fellow Alan Gregory/Sam Purdy fans. I was fortunate to receive this ARC of the book since it doesn't release until August, but that means...more

3.5 stars - only reason it didn't get more stars from me is because I had a hard time in the beginning - all the back and forth between previous story lines - I kept trying to figure the previous stuff out - go back in my memory to remember what happened with McClennan, etc. When I let that go, I enjoyed the book, then at a point, everything just starts to explode and happen.
Of course this leaves it set up for the final book - and I know I'm not going to like finding out what really happened at...more

Holy. Freakin'. Moly!!
Even more so if you are a fan of the series, which I am. If you aren't, I imagine you'd still enjoy it, but since I know the characters, I can't say for sure!
I read the four previous books to this, and this book, in THREE days. I did almost nothing but read . . . what a RIDE, to do it that way!
This book, though, really . . . well, if you are a fan, you've GOT to read this book! If you haven't read Stephen White and you like this type of book, you've GOT to read this series!...more

In a note the author informs the reader that this is the next-to-the-last novel in the long-running series featuring psychotherapist Alan Gregory. He intends to complete the series on his own terms because of the changing nature of the book industry with number 20. Not many authors reach such a conclusion. Even Ian Rankin had to bring back his popular Rebus protagonist.

Stephen White’s fictional novel “Line of Fire” starts so disappointedly slow that both my wife and I considered setting it aside, but as the wife forged ahead into this next-to-last novel in White’s long-running saga of Boulder psychologist Alan Gregory she found herself engaged. I would soon follow, entering the can’t-put-it-down stage.

I do not want this series to end; however, this is a good start to White's next - and final - book in the Alan Gregory series.

Great book. Need to read others in this series -- this is not a good first book for this series; start from the beginning. Sad to see that this series is ending. I definitely enjoyed these books. Fast-paced, suspenseful, everything a person could want.....

Clinical psychologist and Boulder resident Alan Gregory is finally beginning to feel settled, hopeful that a long period of upheaval in his private life is behind him. He refocuses his energy on his clinical psychology practice, where a beguiling new patient is challenging his values. The interlude of calm doesn’t last, of course: Alan’s dear friend Diane is showing signs of a long-simmering emotional collapse, and Alan’s greatest fear—the exposure of his most dangerous secret—has become somethi...more
I have read all of Stephen White’s novels. I started when I lived In Longmont, CO which is basically Boulder-east and was so enthralled with Alan Gregory, Sam Purdy and their friends that I couldn’t put any of them down. The same goes today – I loved this book.

This truly gripping series is soon coming to an end. With the release of this novel, readers find themselves only one book away from realizing the ultimate ending that the amazing Stephen White has in mind for his much-beloved character, Alan Gregory.

White's title for his second-to-last novel in the series can refer to a lot of themes in the novel: the backdrop of the wildfires in Boulder, Colorado, which effect the tension and setting in the story; Alan and Sam who are in the line of fire as suspicion about a three-year-old suicide case is opened back up as a possible homicide; and literally in the line of fire when ... well, I don't want to mention that or this will be a spoiler review.

Coming into a series at the nineteenth book is not a good idea! This story was filled with allusions to earlier books in the series that would have evoked memories and emotions for fans of the series but I just found them vague and incomprehensible. The protagonist of this story is Dr. Alan Gregory who is a psychotherapist in Boulder, Colorado. He is married to an Assistant District Attorney. He is good friends with a Boulder police officer named Sam.

I have followed the Alan Gregory novels of Stephen White's since the beginning, and have liked many of them and not liked other as much. This is the first part of the two-book ending of this series, and it is excellent. The characters who I have grown to know from the previous novels are almost surreal in the way they are presented in this particular book; some of them seem to be just a bit different; others are dramatically different, and because of this, the writing, in my opinion, is refreshi...more
Line of Fire is the most compelling Stephen White book I've read in a long time - and I've read them all. I read the book in three or four sittings. Once I started reading, I just couldn't stop, which is unusual for me.
I'd really recommend re-reading Dry Ice, and perhaps Missing Persons, if you haven't read them recently. Line of Fire draws heavily on events from these two books, and my memories for the details of the plots was a bit hazy.

bittersweet. Knowing that this is the beginning of the end makes this a hard book to pick up. As if by not reading it I can postpone the ending of this series. Of course I can't, and once I picked it up, it was hard to put down. I haven't read all the books in this series yet, but I was given an oppertunity to read an ARC of this book and I couldn't pass that up. There was a LOT of catching up to do and honestly I had no idea what was going on at the beginning of this book, I was able to catch u...more
Alan Gregory is a Boulder, Colorado psychologist. His friend Detective Sam Purdy committed a murder a few books back. His reasons are unimpeachable and he never regretted it. Alan keeps his secret and sets himself up as co-conspirator. His only worry is that he can’t tell his wife Lauren, who is a Boulder D.A.

This is the next to last book in the Alan Gregory series and it may very well be the best yet. I was lucky enough to get an ARC from the moderator of my Stephen White group, who got ten from the author to give out to our group. The story is far superior to the last one in the series, The Last Lie, which I found disappointing. This entry is gripping from beginning to end, continuing major story lines from Missing Persons and Dry Ice and dropping in references to other entries as well. The interac...more
#19 in the Alan Gregory series. This is the penultimate novel in the long running series and is the first part of a two part series finale. Stephen has thrown everything but the kitchen sink into the cliffhanger ending to this entry so we know that the sink must be coming in the series wrap-up.

Psychologist Alan Gregory has a lot going on; what with the wild fires close to his Colorado home, a colleague become unbalanced and a secret that he and his best friend Sam Purdy, a cop share that was accidently exposed threatens to bring his quiet life tumbling down.
This being the end of the series of novels that involve Alan and Sam, I wanted to see how it would all turn out. Although, it would help if one read previous stories involving these characters, but it wasn’t necessary. The read get...more

It always seems to begin with a new client or two in crisis. . . .This book completely floored me. The central characters we all know and love appear in this book in new roles, transitional roles and in just plain shocking roles. It's completely unpredictable and so engaging I read it in one sitting. Remember the book is the first half of the closing of the series. Watch for your favorite characters to appear and evolve. This is another good story in the Dr Alan Gregory series. There is more personal story in this one then somee of his stories and I enjoyed it. I missed the last book and so some of what is discussed I wasn't aware of, but it didn't impact the overall plot of the story.

I am a big fan of this series and enjoy the characters; this book had a shocking ending that you will not see coming. If you havent read this series, dont start here; there are lots of references to previous books, and you really need to understand the characters and relationships to do this book justice. I thought it was a great read; i do wish the last few scenes were as detailed as other parts of the book, i felt as if some of the most significant events were a little rushed compared to t...more

Oh Joy!! I've had a nasty, big project that I've been putting off - completely go through my entire 4 drawer lateral file and toss, make new files, etc. as well as file assorted stacks of paper - which included a "ton" of magazine patterns. I told myself I could start this book as soon as I finished. Yay me!! I'm done. However, I'm a bit disappointed in the less than stellar reviews this one has gotten. We'll see what *I* think. Have I mentioned that I love Stephen White?

Loved this book. I've read all his books which have the same character but have missed the last 4 or so. Turns out he's written 18 and he's closing the series w/2 more, this is 1 of them. I was really riveted - just the way he writes I get into the characters, then it was getting very interesting because of some secret that had come to light, etc. Ending was surprising, so I can't wait for the last book. I won't go back and read the ones I missed, although I should, as they contain the details o...more
The plot is good falling back on a previous case Alan Gregory and Sam Purdy shared way back. I think Stephen White stretched making it all work but in the process brought Alan and Sam at times out of the character we have come to expect. Also in this book Alan's wife Lauren is murdered, I didn't feel the portion that worked with Lauren's shooting and the hospital scene were long enough or elaborate enough. It was indicated this was the last book in this series, there seemed to be a lot of unansw...more
I have really enjoyed this series, and this one is a great addition. I wish the story hadn't relied so heavily on events from earlier in the series, because (a) I remembered reading them, but not that well, and (b) it took too much of this book to give me enough to work with. I think the explanations slowed down the early parts of the book, although they were neatly done, and in the end I appreciated that they worked into the current plot. Looking forward to the next in the series--talk about am...more
This was an excellent book, combining story lines from previous books in the series and leaving readers wanting more.
I'm excited for the final installment - although I'm saddened to see the series end, I'm at the same time impressed with Stephen White for the way he is bringing this saga to a close.

A jumbled, mixed up story about a psychoanalyst and his cop pal who murdered the ex- girlfriend of the cop some years before and then covered it up. Pages of psychobabble and various side stories such as a wildfire approaching the town are given prominence in the book but have little, if, anything, to do with the plot. Multiple references are made to incidents involving the characters which (apparently) happened in the past but they are never explained, making the story difficult to follow. I wo...more
Book #19 in he Alex Delaware series and reportedly the next to last. The plot is set in 2010 at the time of the Fourmile Fire and later the Dome Fire. Alex and Sam are deeply involved in a couple of critical issues. Alex's business partner, Diane, goes over the edge.
