This book is much more substantive than the colorful cover featuring a Lincoln bobblehead doll might suggest to the reader. It starts out light enough, with chapters cataloging various ways Abraham Lincoln is "sold" to the modern public. These include how Lincoln has been adopted by both current political parties, does brisk sales in memorabilia and museum visits (even if much on display is reproduction), and gets featured in a variety of sales pitches. But the book also delves into more ...more

Because of Lincoln's assassination, he has been heralded as a hero and anyone who disagrees is viewed as anti-American. Lincoln is the American Dream personified and because of that, he is idealized in all mediums from TV, movies, biographies, novels, t-shirts, and bobble heads to just name a few. This idolization is similar to that of Che Guevara. however, it's to an even greater extent with Lincoln because he died almost 150 years ago and yet teachers still teach their students to act like ...more

Jackie Hogan's concise and enlightening book about how Abraham Lincoln is symbolized (and exploited) in contemporary U.S. culture is an excellent read. Given the facts that Lincoln is one of our most studied and revered historical figures, he is a person that virtually all Americans know and (think they) understand. Therefore, Lincoln is used to sell everything from car insurance to trinkets and places and artifacts associated with him or his associates are major attractions.

Lincoln, Inc. by Jackie Hogan is a biography of the Lincoln brand, rather than yet another Abraham Lincoln biography. Lincoln's image as advertising device is most often seen in February around President's day, in April for when tax returns are due or anytime "truth" or "trustworthiness" is being hyped as part of an advertising campaign.

The book opens with a lengthy discussion of the modern day Lincoln brand. Some of campaigns were run nationally, while others may be regional interpretations of

First off, as a reader of over 100 books on Abraham Lincoln (which I thought was an awesome thing until the author pointed out that there have been over 5000 books written AL), I was instantly intrigued with this book that sports a Lincoln bobble head on the cover. As someone who has been in the "marketing" business world, the description fascinated me and I knew I had to read it!!

It was interesting how the author laid out this country's fascination, good and bad, with Lincoln. This book was ful

Took some of my thunder out of my dissertation studies. Very good contemporary review in portions of Lincoln museums and agencies and how visitation has been changing.
