I was given a copy of this book to review by the author.
Ignite is basically the starter before the main course. It’s a (very) short story about Jeremy and how he came to be at the Marksville Orphanage. This story gives us a bit of background about Jeremy and his life at the Orphanage. Then a terrible tragedy strikes and his world is never the same.
The book is quite dark and certainly sets a grim scene for Jeremy’s life. At times it has a...more

I have to preface this review with the fact that I got this from the author off Smashwords. She's a pretty cool lady to chat with on Twitter, and I've promoted her books in the past. I will continue to do so, but I'm not sure I'll read them. I really hate to write negative reviews, but this was not a very good short story, in my opinion. Here's why:
1. Awful editing. Way too many run-on sentences. Commas were all over the place. Grammar was just wrong (using I instead of me, etc.). It's not hard...more

Jeremy, a child who was dropped off at an orphanage by his parents at a very young age, tells a memoir type story of his life. It's told mostly in past tense, though sometimes switches to present tense and back again.
The first part of this story caught and held my interest as Jeremy leads the reader through his sorrow-filled past.
The second half is more mysterious, perhaps even more ominous, but for me misses the mark. There isn't much dialogue or action, instead it's still as if Jeremy is simpl...more

I don't read young adult fiction often (at all) so take this with a grain of salt...
The story had an ominous feel to it and I enjoyed the twist at the end. I assume this was a teaser to the longer work the author has planned and if that was the case, she has me hooked. Success!
However as a stand alone work I wanted a bit more detail as well as a slowing down of the story. I think that would have built up a connection with the character a bit more and amped up the payoff of the twist. But again,...more

A very intriguing snippet that sets the tone for Reveal. I loved the setting and the lazy feel Brina Courtney's writing evoked. The downside is that Jeremy's story tugged at me so much that I fear there might be an extended bout of weeping in my future when I meet up with him again. Dangit, Brina. I don't cry pretty. Why are you doing this to me?
Ignite was a very short, very haunting story that has me itching to read more about this world.

This should not be taken as a book. It isnt even long enough to be a short story. This simply should be put as the prologue to the next book and kept that way.
As for the actual writing, I felt like I was reading a book for third graders, the word choices and grammar were simple and easy.
The book following this one is not one I will read fully. This simplistic form of writing wears on me.

Some stories are short stories for the simple reason that there's really not much of a story to expand upon. This is not the case with this book. The only reason that I gave this four stars instead of five is because I wanted more. It was a very interesting idea and I really enjoyed it. I just felt like it could have been so much more.
