Now travel back three generations before Laura's and read the story of Martha Morse, the little girl who would grow up to leave Scotland and start a new life in America, and who would become Laura Ingalls Wilder's great-grandmoth...more

I've always loved the Little House series. I'm glad someone decided to do some research and continue the stories with Laura's mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. This is the second book of the great-grandmother series. Martha Morse has more adventures in Glencaraid, Scotland. In this episode, her two eldest brothers go off to school in Edinburgh, her uncle Harry and his family move in across the loch, and she gets a much-needed pet hedgehog. As with any historical story, much is fiction...more

I liked this one even better than the first Martha book (though not as much as the Laura books!). What really worked was that the author looked at it from the child's perspective, and didn't let any adult nostalgia for lost times creep in (I'm looking at you, Richard Peck!). It was just a story about life in late 18th century Scotland for a minor laird and his family, with wonderful details such as waulking new cloth and letting a hedgehog live in the kitchen to keep the beetles down. It also ha...more

I really enjoyed reading the Martha Years. I didn't think I would like the series because it was so far from Laura's time and it takes place in Scotland but I found the series to be as enjoyable as Lauras.
I would greatly encourage Little House fans to read the whole little house series beginning with Laura's great grandmother, Martha, and ending with Laura's daugher, Rose. It was so much fun reading about the different times these women lived in. Rated three stars because it is way below my rea...more

This volume on the life Laura Ingalls Wilder’s great grandmother takes place over the course of a 2 week period when Martha’s cousins come to stay for a visit. Martha and her cousin, Rachel, are foils of each other; while Martha is a free spirit and loves to have fun and get dirty, Rachel is the perfect little lady, shy, quite and ever so clean. As you might imagine, these differences cause a great amount of drama over the 2 weeks.

There are several great themes in this book that children can rel...more

After reading the first book, I found that this book was alot easier. It felt like starting another chapter in the first book because it left off and began again. I enjoyed this book as well.

Second in a series about Laura Ingalls Wilder's great grandmother. Delightful I shall continue with these. So easy to read, yet you feel it's quality reading.

This is the second book in the Martha years series and I liked it just as much as the first one. I have been pleasently surprised at how much these stories hold my attention. They are simple sweet stories but you get to know Martha well and love her. I also enjoy learning about the scottish culture and folklore. I hope all of the books in the Little House series are as good.
